    This is the best "what's in my kidding kit" video I've ever seen. I really appreciate all the effort and in-depth information you have provided. I haven't heard anyone talk about giving their goats red raspberry leaf tea and comfrey leaf tea before so that's good to know. I watch a lot of homesteaders and goat people because eventually I want to have some goats myself but I've never seen anyone talk about after care to their does. It's like "yay, babies are here, have some molasses water and you don't have to do anything else" so it is incredibly informative to hear all the extra stuff you do for your does. I love that you talk about the good, the bad and the ugly of raising goats. Too many hide the bad stuff because everything should be sunshine and rainbows on their ranch. Thank you for keeping it real! 💚

    The only thing I might suggest is, to have a bottle of Epinephrine on hand. I've had to use it in a huge hurry when it was least expected! BOSE can cause an instant & severe allergic reaction as can any antibiotic. It's extremely frightening & has to be dealt with ASAP!! Other than that your kit is very thorough! Prayers for your does, as well as for ALL of us here on Maternity watch! 😉 God bless!

    Have you ever watched Ewetopia Farm's channel? Lynn and Arnie raise sheep in Canada. She has some great practices for the newborn lambs. For one they tube all their lambs colostrum immediately after birth due to their cold environment and to ensure the lamb getting the colostrum early. Of course this is much more necessary due to the large number of lambs born during the season. She also talks about how helpful an enema can be to a baby that isn't thriving. The baby not having a bowel movement is something that can be overlooked as the cause of a baby not thriving.
    Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experiences with us!! Stay safe!!

    I love this series on goats. You have talked me into getting dairy goats. I was dead set on a dairy cow but I have reconsidered. My husband works very hard to provide for our family but that mostly means he is not here during the week. I had not considered that I would be on my own to deal with a thousand pound animal. We just got our homestead in November and your content has given me a lot of inspiration.

    Love these videos! It's been 10 years since I whelped a litter of puppies for anyone and I still can't toss old towels, cause ya never know! It's interesting we always gave red raspberry leaf tea too. We didn't have nose suckers, I have sucked directly on a puppies nose in times of need. Making those tough decisions ahead of time and carrying them out for the benefit of your animals is one of those strengths you possess that makes you so good at what you do. You will always remember that pain, and that is a good thing. If it didn't hurt it wouldn't honor the human/animal relationship. Can people that don't care do this stuff? Sure they can but in my opinion they aren't worth squat. (I had to struggle to find a word that wasn't really unkind so I chose squat). Question regarding the banamine, we always gave it through injection (horses) could you spare their rumen by giving it in injectable form? Old school horse folks used to take it for hangovers! Scary lol. I love Margie's coloring, and that beard is fabulous! 2 and 2 on the kid count. Beautifully done, this will bring so much value to anyone with a dairy herd.

      Thank you so much ♥♥♥ I didn't realize speaking about the situation out loud was going to make it all come flooding back but it sure did! I really pray we never have to encounter a situation like that again. We have used injectable (Sq) and topical Banamine. What I have on hand is topical. I think it's mostly about the drug in the body as a whole that can cause issues of the intestinal and renal systems, not necessarily based on how it's given. Online it says that it can weaken the protective properties of the GI tract and cause ulcers.

    “The body absorbs vitamin B12 from food in a two-step process. First, hydrochloric acid in the stomach separates vitamin B12 from the protein that it's attached to. Second, the freed vitamin B12 then combines with a protein made by the stomach, called intrinsic factor, and the body absorbs them together.”
    I suffer from chronically low Vit B due to autoimmune issues. If there are stomach / gut issues that interfere with absorption physicians will then give shots to bypass the ‘broken system’ and get some into the blood stream.

      Of course we don’t have rumens, lol, but I am assuming it works similarly because they acquire minerals / vitamins / nutrients orally.
      I would be curious if their vitamin B levels also affect them having anemia. In humans, pernicious anemia, is caused when the stomach lining doesn’t produce what is needed to break it down for absorption correctly, which then affects the proper development of red blood cells … it’s all one connected fascinating system.

    • @SageandStoneHomestead
      @SageandStoneHomestead  Рік тому +2

      I'm not sure. I do know that when they are critically low on B vitamins, they die. I think the rumen produces B vitamins and human digestive processes generally don't. So when the rumen doesn't function to produce the B vitamins they need supplements.

    Interesting. I had to treat my Ivy for anemia and the vet said she needs B12 as well. I told her all I had was the oral drench and she said that the injection is better to ensure they get what they need.
    When Ivy was done kidding she refused the molasses water because she had been through so much. Poor baby. My other goats guzzled it up. As always.
    As with umbilical, I am always nervous it will rip out of their bellies. I have had that happen before, but the kid did well despite. And oh my word! I had those nose suckers for my kids!! Haha. I spray iodine now as well. I used to dip them, but it was more waste. Oh girl! That device for pulling a kid would have helped me tremendously this last kidding. I probably won't make a video on that as it really depends on each person's goals and I don't want to say it's wrong or right because it depends on several factors. Well-bred goats can be line bred in this way with okay outcomes. Eventually new blood should be brought in because what happens is breeding this way will bring out flaws and magnify them. You could do it if you were going to eat the offspring or sell them as pet only. I would not line breed like this and sell the baby as a breeder. If you just need meat and milk it is fine, but understand some deformity and flaws can result.

    Excellent video! I have to watch it again, now that I have my list in front of me. Do you buy your loose tea leaves locally or online? Can you recommend a website?
