    what may escape most people is that these compositions are complicated, simple, and lovely. they instantly hit a nostalgia that many people cant get to. you can rearrange these compositions to mean anything. david wise is the underdog in mainstream.

    Out of curiousity, does anyone happen to know what the Salamandos project is for? Is it going to be for a new video game? A new cartoon? Or are they planning on starting a band like the South American dinosaur band Hevisaurus?

    David Wise is an incredible composer in my opinion. DKC is one of my favorite series and the music played a role in what made it so sweet. But he is not a good performer at all. This was a very surprising performance I could not look away nor could I help but feel embarrassed just watching. If I were him I would ask MAGFest to take this video down. Where do I begin with all the things wrong here?
    1. He sounds like he is dying. Every time he plays saxophone it sounds like a flat kazoo or something. Anyone saying he sounds good on saxophone is either lying or they have never heard a saxophone in their life. I listen to a lot of jazz but I don't really play instruments so if there are any saxophonists in the comments feel free to let me know I'm wrong. I venture to guess he does not practice like ever.
    2. The songs are practically being played note for note and drag on for too long. It just doesn't make for an interesting performance even if it was played expertly. For instance his guest Kristin Naigus sounds absolutely stunning on the "clarinet" (it's not a clarinet), but if the song just drags on without any interesting variations, I would rather go out for a smoke break after a point.
    3. There is not a single person of color on the stage, but someone thought it was a good idea to project footage of an African dance event as a prop for this performance?!? I KNOW I'm not the only one who found this wildly distasteful. Whoever thought this was an ok idea needs to get a clue.
    I LOVE David Wise's music. Have ever since I was a kid. But may God have mercy on his soul.

      @DaNintendude 4 роки тому +1

      1. I personally found the only issue with the Saxophone playing to be that it wasn't loud enough. I do think it sounds a bit echoey though. The audio setup wasn't the best. I can see what you mean by "he's not good on saxophone", and I'll respect your opinion, but I personally likes how he plays it. He's not the best, but it's better than just "good" imo.
      He's much better in studio recordings, when he's not on the spot like this. You can hear it quite clearly in the Stickerbrush Symphony portion, where they have the official OST version playing alongside Wise's live performance.
      2. I was bothered less about this, and more about the fact that they have the songs from the soundtracks playing loudly in the background. It was hard to even tell if they were playing for a lot of the songs, because it was just them playing over the complete version. I think it was best with Seashore War, where the background music wasn't the original song, but just pieces of it that allowed them to play over it better. It was also a nice twist to hear electric guitar instead of acoustic guitar.
      I do get what you mean though, and I wish there was some more variation and stuff to make it interesting, and not just the novelty of hearing the songs performed live.
      3. I can't respond to this one, because I wasn't watching the visuals. I tried searching through the video for it, but I couldn't find it, and don't have the patience to search for it. That sounds really weird and off-putting though, and I feel perhaps I'd feel it was distasteful too. I don't believe having a POC on stage would justify it, however.
      Edit: turns out the African dancing came on right after I went back to resume watching after making this comment. Yeah, that's really weird. Doesn't even fit Seashore War. there's a lot of stock footage used throughout the performance, so I don't really know what to think. Maybe it was just in one of the compilations of stock footage they used, and they didn't choose it _specifically_ for the dancing, but rather the other stuff in it. If it fit more, I could see it, but it would still be a bit offputting.
      Overall, I enjoyed it. Like I said, I really enjoyed Seashore War.
      It was probably cool for the people there live to see Wise perform live on some of their favorite songs. But it was sort of underwhelming as well.

      @asims615 4 роки тому +2

      @@DaNintendude For the sax playing I'd say the main problem is his tone. He was never formally taught how to play the sax and learned it himself though, so that would explain why his tone is on the weaker side. Also, the recording of the sax for the credits version of Stickerbush Symphony was done by a much more experienced sax player that works at Retro; he probably does sound a lot better when recording in his studio though. As for Seashore War, the version that they played was actually the original version of the piece and was meant to be in one of the savanna levels but it got cut so he redid it and made the version that's in the final game. The version that was played uses mostly African instrumentation so I didn't really see the footage as distasteful, and more of a celebration of African culture. Even if this performance could be considered bad, he's primarily a composer and one of the best in the industry, so it's nice to see him going out and having fun with something different for him and I wouldn't let this performance take away from his amazing music ability.

    • @jorymil
      @jorymil 4 роки тому +1

      No argument here - it doesn't sound like David is supporting his tone, and the fake big band backing track on DK Island Swing doesn't do the song any favors. The live performance here just isn't my cup of tea.
