Yep.. They've already done the Mr Grinch...the look of shock on your face when Geoff went higher was priceless. If you go back to where I think Layne was singing the words "to add a little spice" (5.22) watch Geoff in the background and listen to his low run... It's shocking... 😳😊

That note was Geoff's showstopper for quite a while. That last descent goes from a high of B4 down to a subharmonic E1, but he can go lower still. He's recorded a B0 in the Halo Theme, and a C1 on his solo channel, in a cover of Elvis Presley's Way Down. His vocal dexterity is also insane- you mentioned his ability to pop up and down octaves, and he does that sort of thing all. The. Time. His control is just ridiculous.

@@lkayhall of the members of VoicePlay have incredible vocal ranges! Eli and Layne will fill in as bass when needed during Geoff’s solos, but they can also reach up into the stratosphere with their high notes. I love all the a cappella groups out there, but there truly is something so unique and special about VoicePlay. They’re in a league of their own both musically and visually in their performances.

my mans can theoretically go down to C#0 as a fry, which still sounds like a note and is so low it can't be replicated with a contrabass or a grand piano. He usually stops around B0 - A0 since there's no need to go lower. Obviously, subharmonics don't sound as meaty as chest notes, but mans can go down to F#1 in chest, he does it in the "Sixteen Tons" cover and some other songs. His highest belt note is at least A5, maybe higher, but he didn't want to strain his voice too much. His range is ridiculous. In the Queen medley he goes from Eb5 down to like Eb1 in one verse, in the Little Mermaid medley he does a slide from D5 to D1, obviously with a couple skips when switching to chest and then to subs, but still ridiculous. In the Enemy cover he hits an A0 and a D5 in one song. It should be illegal to be as sexy as mans be

Thurl Ravenscroft (the man who sang 'You're A Mean One Mr. Grinch' in the original cartoon version of the How the Grinch Stole Christmas) was one of Geoff's 'bass heroes', and he has done several songs where you can hear him do a fantastic 'Thurlish' performance. Yes, Virginia! there is a VoicePlay version of "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch", arranged by Geoff himself, and since you're doing Christmas in July, why not react to that also! Other songs with a strong Thurl vibe/homage is VoicePlay's 'Grim Grinning Ghosts' (from the Disney Haunted Mansion ride), and Geoff's solo videos of "The Headless Horseman" and "Saddle Up".
Since you admired the lighting, can I just add that not only are nearly all VoicePlay songs arranged by Geoff or the beatboxer, Layne, but they oversee all the filming themselves, including the lighting, done by the bald tenor, Eli! Usually the direction is done by whoever did the arrangement. While they obviously need someone else to do the camerawork when they are performing as a group, Layne and former member Tony Wakim (who partners with Layne on the fantastic Patty Cake Productions, doing Disney-inspired videos) have actually been the cameramen for some of Geoff's most recent videos. Geoff performed as 'Frankenstein' at Universal Studios in 'Bettlejuice's Graveyard Revue' for a number of years before VoicePlay became something that the members could make a living at full time.
That lowest end note was done using by the subharmonic technique, which Geoff has since developed and perfected to an insane level! But the more I listen to this video, the more I realize what an absolutely fantastic arrangement it is, with all the other members doing marvelous character voices while still singing on key and how it makes such an absolute gorgeous framework for Geoff to soar and dip over with his high and low notes.
I have always loved musical theater, and I realize that everyone is entitled to their own taste and preferences, but once I've seen a reactor say, "VoicePlay: great voices but I wish they'd stop being so THEATRICAL!", I just know they are never going to love VP's work as much as I do.
When watching reactions to this particular song, so many times the reactor starts out saying that either they've never seen Nightmare Before Christmas or that it's one of their favorite movies, and they're prepared to be disappointed because nothing could compare to the original. Which makes it all the more fun when you see them end up being blown away by this arrangement and performance.

Yes! You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch is fantastic. Not only does Geoff get to show off his chops, but it's also easier to hear the other vocalists, since everyone gets a moment to shine (without character voices).

Ha, when you said you were spending too much time in your basement I thought, "wait until you hear Geoff go into *his* basement"! Yes, he has an insane range. He's also friends with bassists Tim Foust (Home Free) and Avi Kaplan (ex Pentatonix), and apparently they have all taught each other stuff. You could also check out Geoff's own channel where he sings with his clones (they even have name badges in one video). Perhaps start with Far Over Misty Mountains Cold. And yes, he does have a stage background, for instance he and his wife both used to sing regularly in a live show at Universal Studios.
Also, more VoicePlay, please - perhaps for variety Queen in Five Minutes (which focuses on Earl, one of the tenors)? Thanks!

    Good Morning Bob,
This was a great choice. VoicePlay is my favorite of the 3 acapella bands, but all are great. Yes ,he really just did that! LOL
Geoff Castellucci has, I believe, a 5 octave range. He, beatboxer Layne Stein, and tenor Eli Jacobsen (bald guy) are still with the group. Earl Elkins Jr(with beard) left the band, and J.None (leather jacket) joined the US Navy. Ceasar De La Rosa is the other current member you saw in 'Dream On' .Geoff and Layne take turns doing most of the arrangements, Eli does a lot of the lighting, and Geoff's wife Kathy is the production manager.
The cover of We Don't Talk About Bruno (from Disney's Encanto) is a good one to try next from VoicePlay.

Great reaction!! Voiceplay is my very favorite acapella group. This piece was done a couple of years ago, two of the singers are no longer with the group. The bearded tenor left in 2020 for personal reasons, and the black baritone left last year, recruited by the US Navy to sing with them. Dream On had the current lineup plus a featured artist.
Since you are doing Christmas, if you haven't gotten all of your selections let me recommend a couple of their other holiday selections:
The First Noel - an even older lineup
Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
and from Geoff Castellucci's solo channel - God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
Subscribed in anticipation of more Voiceplay and Geoff Castellucci.

My current theory is that Geoff considers a piano's range too limiting...but none of the group stays in a lane.
They have done 4(?) songs from the Nightmare Before Christmas, and they had waayyy too much fun.
For epic/theatrical try Hoist the Colours, The Dragonborn Comes, or My Mother Told Me. They do a lot of Disney covers cosplaying or doing a color nod to the characters, try We Don't Talk About Bruno, Friends On the Other Side, or the Moana or Little Mermaid Medleys (plus you get a purple Geoff). For more straight up try Wayward Son. They have no bad songs!

It's good to find someone doing reactions who is in my age range. I have become a huge Geoff Castellucci fan after hearing his solo work. I think you would enjoy doing a reaction of his "16 Tons", "Big John", "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", "Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold" or any of his other videos. All of his videos highlight those marvelous bass tones of his, but in many you will also hear his vast vocal range. I would be delighted to hear your reaction to any of Geoff's videoa.

Of the a cappella groups...Voiceplay is the most theatrical. Costumes role playing etc.
They are a favorite (but after Home Free)
Recommend their boy bands in 5 minutes...their Queen in 5 minutes...their various medleys
They were based in Orlando FL, performing with Disney/Universal. Had a two member turn over, now have quest/featured artists performing. GEOFF castellucci also has his own YT channel...has really released a number of great solo performances this last year. Recommend his cover/upgrade of Tennessee Ernie Ford's "Sixteen Tons".
    Enjoy

The core of the group grew up together in Orlando. I believe Earl and Geoff go back to junior high choir together. As they went through high school, they were good enough to work at Disney World theme park. Disney is well known for their theatrical training, which is why their makeup and production value is so good. It is also why they are so well versed in Disney standards in particular. They are the best theatrical act of the 3 main a capella groups, in my opinion.

As one commenter mentioned, Geoff's last run went from a B4 down to an E1. If you're not familiar with the numbering of octaves on a full 88-key piano, an E1 is the 5th white key from the left. Of the 'Big 3' acapella groups you've listened to, Pentatonix (PTX) are probably the most...formal?, Homefree are the country flavored and Voiceplay are the theatre kids. There's another group that's big on the scene called Voctave that are more of a choral acapella but great, as well. A great showcase vid for them is The Great Movie Medley (all John Williams' scores, I believe).
If you're a fan of Disney films, Voiceplay has a couple of medleys that are outstanding from _The Little Mermaid_ and _Moana_ .
Fun Fact: Geoff was taught several of his bass techniques by Tim Foust of Homefree. The two groups are friends.

For another Christmassy song from Geoff Castellucci, the bass singer here, I do recommend God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, for a really unique take on the song. VoicePlay are known as the theatre kids of acapella, ,they definitely have their own sound, as do Home Free and PTX. This song doesn't really do their voices justice, apart from Geoff of course. Oh and they have done the Grinch song. A number of them have worked for Disney one way or another. Oh and I've heard him do that last short run live on TikTok so I know it's real. :) And yes they are a fun group.

Geoff Castellucci has a couple of videos on his solo channel about how to sing REALLY low bass notes, or at least how he does it. Oddly (to me, at least) he considers himself as a baritone, with a bass extension. I would simply consider him a very talented bass. I know that Tim Foust from Home Free has helped Jeff with his subharmonics, and now Geoff can pretty much hit those on command.
On Geoff's last note in this song - originally, he planned to go up the octave for that note, but Layne, who arranged the song, asked him to do something special - so Geoff did!

  • @qapla
    @qapla 2 роки тому

Yes, Geoff can really sing those low notes. His range is something else - and he does it with such ease. While many people comment on his singing in this song, and his range in a couple of places, one thing that seldom gets mentioned is the bass run he does at 5:22 in your video. Did you catch that? If drives his ability to another level because he has that range even when he is making "music" not singing words.

#TheatreKidsOfACappella. This is the one that everyone was going crazy over 2 years ago. We all miss Earl (the guy with the full beard) and J.None. They did do Your A Mean One Mister Grinch. Geoff isn't a theatre geek, just singing. Fun fact Sandy Claws is Geoff's real-life brother-in-law.

  • @shirleykarr560
    @shirleykarr560 2 роки тому

VoicePlay guys love Nightmare Before Christmas, and have done three other sings from it: What's This, This is Halloween, and Kidnap the Sandy Claws. You can date their videos by the lineup (they've been together for over a decade and had a few changes) and length of Geoff's hair (he started letting it grow long just before his son was born).
VP has an entire album of Christmas music-- Holiday Road, I think is the title, plus Baby It's Cold Outside with Geoff on lead, and Mr. Grinch. On his solo channel is God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. He also sang the Grinch Song on Peter Hollens' Christmas Movie Theme Songs medley.
If the trifecta of a cappella were school, Pentatonix is the student council, VoicePlay is the theater kids, and Home Free is out in the parking lot hosting a tailgate party.
HF has a big library of Christmas songs, too. They can make you cry -- from the beauty of the gospel songs, especially ... forget the name but it was filmed at night in an ice cave... to tears of laughter at Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer, or Full of Cheer, an original song composed by their bass, Tim Foust.
Originally Geoff wanted Oogie to go up at the end, but Layne, the beatboxer who arranged this, challenged him to go lower than he thought he could at the time. He was also reluctant to do the riff in Tennessee Whiskey but Layne talked him into doing that, too.
Being from Florida, all the VP guys and many of their collaborators have performed at various theme parks and cruise ships. Geoff danced and sang as Frankenstein's Monster at Universal's Beetlejuice Revue for ten years, in platform shoes and green makeup. He's been singing professionally since he was 17. His first gig was as a Dickens Caroler.
When you're done with Christmas, I highly recommend Geoff's version of Way Down, where he covers Elvis and legendary bass JD Sumner. And he dances! He hasn't danced since Monster Mash.

When listening to a capalla music, you should also try to catch Voctave--they are the most "different" from the other groups. There are 11 members and they come up with chords and harmonies right out of heaven. Most anything by Voctave is great, but I love their Disney Princess Medley (featuring the ladies of Vocatve), their Disney Heroes and Villains Medley (featuring the men of Voctave this time), and their great Movie Medley (a tribute to John Willliams). The other a capalla artist to be aware of is Peter Hollens. He's fabulous. Check out his work with Tim Faust (from Home Free) in "Misty Mountains" and "And So it Goes" (Billy Joel cover). His "solo" of "Shenandoah" (from the movie of the same name) is hauntingly beatuiful. Peter is the master of layering vocal tracts. My "fab five" a capella groups are Home Free, Voice Play, Pentatonix, Voctave, and Peter Hollens. As a woman of a "certain" age (late 60's), it's nice to see someone over 50 on You Tube! I’m 61 and grew up listening to all music. I’m the oldest of 4 and my 3 younger siblings loved/love music as much as I do, but we have 4 distinct tastes. That makes me semi well-versed in a lot. Keep on keeping on with Voiceplay!

VoicePlay has done This is Halloween which is also from The Nightmare Before Christmas. They also did You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch with a wonderful young guest vocalist. And please wait until the patrons names start scrolling before shutting down; like so many of the a cappella genre the video is not necessarily over when the song is done. Like their Halo theme. There's two more I want to recommend; The Phantom of the Opera feat. Rachel Potter and Just Sing. Make sure closed captions are turned on for that last one. Enjoy!

Hello. Sure, I'll try to play to the very end. Sometimes when I do that, it jumps into the next video. I was trying to avoid that. Thanks.

Your speaking voice tells me you’re probably a bass as well, even if you don’t sing. Incidentally, Eli (pronounced ELee), the guy who handed Geoff the dice, did the lighting for this. Great reaction!

I really enjoyed your reaction-thanks! Yes, Geoff Castellucci has an incredible voice and this piece really showcases him. Voice Play is a group from Orlando Florida and all the members and many of their featured guests have worked as performers at Universal and/or Disney theme parks. They are very different from Pentatonix and Home Free as they are the theater kids of acapella groups. Their covers of anything Disney are the best around but they are so good covering other genres of music and always have a theatrical flair for all the details. They do all of their own production. You noticed and appreciated the lighting effects in this; bald singer, Eli (pronounced rhymes with "belly") does a great job with the lighting ( You would love the lighting in their "Hoist The Colors" from 'Pirates Of The Caribbean'). I think you would love their "Carry On My Wayward Son" and their "Queen In Five Minutes" medley or their "Boy Bands In 5 minutes". I am hoping you will look through their play list and pick out songs you know and like for starters--you will really have so much fun with Voice Play. Deep Bass singer, Geoff Castellucci, has his own solo channel that will amaze you too.

Hi. Thanks for listening. Several people have recommended Carry On My Wayward Son. I've gone ahead and bookmarked that for a future reaction. Thanks!

Try Mr Grinch by Voctave. It's another a cappella group and that video features three amazing bass singers. Then follow up with their Disney Princesses medley for their incredible female singers.

What blows me away is all the little changes and decisions they make with the songs. Considering the original song was just Oogie Boogie singing it solo. But they spread out some of the lyrics between them and it adds so much more to the atmosphere of the song. Especially with throwing it in with Locke Stock and Barrel. Oogies helpers being the other singers makes sense in the film even, so watching the film again actually feels lacking in comparison to this, to me at least. This is a vast improvement, and much greater skill

Hello again, my favorite reactor. This was a great reaction. And I like your new format. The OFFICAL rewind, the way you pop up on screen with small comments, the new intro - the whole lot. You're modernizing the Modern Life for the 70's Mind in a great way I think. And what a cool song, too. It was a first time listen for me as well. And, since my glass is half full, I wish you a happy, early Christmas🎄🎄
Btw, it's less than 12 hours since I came home from the Angelina concert here in Norway. All I can say is a big, fat OMG !!!! It was by far the best concert I have ever been to, and I have been to four😅
Nah..Just joking ofc. She was terrible. 🤣 But I WAS joking about the number of concerts I have been to. I think this was my second. (Don't ask me what I took yesterday. I'm still on a natural Angelina high. WAY high. ) There is no one like her right now. I consider her the best female singer alive. Just my humble 2 cents of course. And a dime. Take care, NO1 🙂 Love from Norway!♥♥♥

Funny you should mention You're A Mean One Mr. Grinch. Pentatonix and VoicePlay have both done covers of that song; they're both good, but VoicePlay's is better.

Okay, THAT's a different Christmas song! That was great! I'm enjoying watching your reactions and wanted to add a Christmas in July song with an original Christmas song by Lindsey Stirling who is normally an instrumentalist/dancer but she sings in this one.
