Hello. I'm from Germany so let me give you some thoughts from someone who was born here. First of all, the first time I watched the video I was shocked and deeply moved. The song/video takes a very deep look into our German souls and how a lot of us feel about our country. It's a love-hate relationship. The video is loaded with tons of symbols, that as a German you catch onto. Let's start: in the intro you see Germania (personification of Germany) during roman/ germanic tribes time. The red lazer represents the "red thread" of the story/history. Astronauts from the future bringing Germania in a glass coffin (snow-white) so she can lead through the/her German history. You see a submarine in the hangar. Next you observe the twenties (Weimar Republic). The prison scene representing the rough, violent times especially for the majority of the population struggling to survive. Money raining down/ the great depression. And Germany's first attempt as a democratic state. In between Germania is dressed in knight's armor awing her knights/band with the Lazarus spear. Next Germania is pushed in a wheelchair by the band through the Berlin Holocaust Memorial with burning bodies. (Imagine the statue of liberty being shown like that. Sorry couldn't come up with an equivalent image of Britania). Next vignette the office scene showing east Germany and west Germany reunited (1990). Then you're being taken back to mideveal times, monks/ church are feasting off of Germania. In most scenes you'll see some church man involved. No coincidence. The concentration camp scene in the background you see V2 rockets ignition. The inmates are wearing different types of stars on their chests and a sign on the gallows reads: no photos. Germania wears an eye-patch first on her left, than on her right eye. Than a quick shot of Germania dressed modern with lots of gold leading German shepherds., representing Germany's wealth. The 70's scene shows the RAF extremists holding Germania/ Germany hostage. The tank scene with the Marx bust represents the uprising of June 1953 in the GDR, which was bloodily suppressed by the USSR army. Next vignette is the witch burnings shifting to the book burning. If you have a close look, at minute 4:45 you see a church man holding up a cross hugging a Nazi, symbolising the churches over all position to the horrific events happening during 1933-1945. The birth scene. Taking place in Valhalla. Germany is giving birth to dogs respectively "Leonberger" a breed preferred by Kings and Queens. The breed almost went extinct during WW1 and WW2. A cardinal/ Constitutional judge (dressed in red) helping a new Germany being born. At minute 5:50 you see the riots against refugees homes in the 90's in Hoyerswerda, Rostock, Solingen and Mölln. Molotovs are being thrown and a car is being pushed over with the help of a man dressed in Nazi uniform. Than the scenes/ time vignettes start shifting faster and faster, showing how many times, when circumstances becoming too extreme everything is falling apart and Germania ( dressed in knight's) armor is crying. The outro is the piano version of the song "Sonne" which completes how we feel thinking of our past: a sense of sadness. To sum it up. Germany has a long, wild, violent, unique history, because we as a state of today have only existed since 1990. Yet the roots go back a very long time. "Young and yet so old" I hope that helped a little to understand the video and with that us Germans. We don't have a strong feeling of patriotism, but a strong sense of unity. With love from Germany❤️🤘🏻
@SheylaSolano-t3q Nur für dich, Sheyla, habe ich mir die Szene nochmal Bild für Bild angeschaut. Es sind Scheine der Rentenmark, die ab 1923 in der Weimarer Republik die Währung waren.
From a Frenchman who lived in Germany for a few years and whose eldest daughter recently gave a detailed presentation on this song at school in France: I agree with everything except 1 description of a scene (and btw it's definitely not a cardinal in my opinion, but in fact ONLY a constitutional judge as the midwife of the Federal Republic of Germany): What I don't agree with so wholeheartedly is the fraternisation scene between the monk and the SA man. Two things can be recognised in this scene: the burning of witches and the burning of books. Different eras, but the same in spirit = fraternising: the destruction of those who think differently, those who live differently, some of whom are more intelligent and open-minded, and their memory. Only secondarily does it possibly (!!!) also allude to the role of the Church in Nazi Germany, which is also logical, as there were also many opponents of the system and victims of the regime among the priesthood. And the most important statement in this video comes right at the end: the statement, ‘...I can't give you my love!’. I missed it in your description... A very clear statement without two possible interpretations and in view of the current development in Germany, the neo-racist spread in society, more than modern and up to date. And finally, how do you analyse the glow of Germania's red eyes in the end? I see it as the embers of evil that still lie dormant in Germania, ready to infect the Germans anew. Salutations des Caraïbes françaises...
@JorigenLeBeig hello thank you for your answer. Regarding the point you disagree with, I guess that could be open to discussion, but unfortunately I read an exchange of letters between the vatican and authorities of the NS-regime and also data regarding visits at the vatican regarding this matter. The overall agreement was the regime won't bother the church and the vatican is gonna keep quiet. I'm not saying that all priest followed that command and therfore were confronted with severe repressions. But priests were and are only humans in every shape and form. Plus the NS-regime was well aware of let's say dark spots of some of their priests. Please also note that I left out quite a few symbols shown in the video, because it would have just been too long. Had I described every detail, my essay would have been at least twice as long. Regarding your last point with the red eyes of Germania. I guess that could be open to interpretation. I honestly have to say, that the red eyes were used to uphold how Germania is seen in every scene. She's always wearing the colours of the German flag. Black, red and gold.
This is one of the best videos from Rammstein and at the same time one of the most difficult content to fully understand. The song is about Germany (Deutschland) and the band's feelings about their home country which has a rather violent history (not only in WW2). It is a kaleidoscope of scenes from 2000 years of German history (some more symbolic, others painfully accurate) and additionally some scenes that might happen in the future when archaeologists are searching for artefacts of German history. The woman is Germania, played by the German actress Ruby Commey. Germania is not a literal person, but was a personification of Germany for centuries. All other main roles are played by the six members of Rammstein. The scene when the monks seem to eat Germania references to the Thirty Year's War (1618-1648), which started as a religious war. As a result of that war - masses of people starved or died by plagues. And the church took what little they had left to live on. If you are interested in more details about some of the historical events referenced in Rammstein's video, you may take a look at this content-wise analysis: ua-cam.com/video/sc-euVL8xQs/v-deo.html Even for me as a German guy there were some details that I was not aware of. Also the lyrics are explained a bit and the assumed reason for Rammstein to come out with this video. And there is an explanation why the video caused some harsh reactions BEFORE it was fully published. The music in the credits is their song "Sonne" in a piano version. This video might be the most complicated way to Rammstein. If you want some lighter ways to Rammstein, you might take a look at their live videos or the more lighthearted official videos: Sehnsucht (live in Nimes, France, 2005 Volkerball tour) ua-cam.com/video/CWNT8UW8_P4/v-deo.html Ich tu dir weh (live from Madison Square Garden 2010) ua-cam.com/video/6TR12QnOAzE/v-deo.html Du hast (live from Paris 2012) ua-cam.com/video/U5HAEzEk8QM/v-deo.html Sonne (live at Rock im Park 2017) ua-cam.com/video/IjGNTqAW58E/v-deo.html Zick Zack (Snip Snap, official video 2022) catchy song, sarcastic, funny ua-cam.com/video/hBTNyJ33LWI/v-deo.html (CC) In case of the live videos that I've listed above, the lyrics are not so important. For the last video, there are auto-translated lyrics available that are sufficient to understand the song - even though you'll get their message surely with the visuals. In many cases the lyrics of Rammstein songs are hard to translate, because they are full of poetic expressions, double entendres, and screwed-up common German phrases. Nevertheless it's worth to go down the rabbit hole of Rammstein (my opinion).
The piano play on the end is a piano version of their song "Sonne". There is a large YT video with a whole list of Ramstein songs in this easy listening piano play.
"Every time period represented." That's correct. It's a musical history of Germany. The good, and the bad. There is so much to parse, if you're interested.
Rammstein have been around since 1994, with no line up changes since the band formed. All of the members originate from the former East Germany. Deutschland is essentially the conflict between the desire to be proud Germans and the need to acknowledge and condemn Germany's often violent and destructive past. This is why the images shown were chosen. It's also worth pointing out that Deutschland was released during Rammstein's 25th anniversary so there are more to their back catalogue all of the way through the video. It's a complex one to start with tbh.
The lyric: “...so young and yet so old” refers to the fact that Germany only existed as a unified nation in 1871 with the founding of the German Empire! Since Germany was divided into the western/democratic “Federal Republic of Germany” (FRG/1949) and the eastern/socialist “German Democratic Republic” (GDR/1949 - 1990) after the Second World War, TODAY’S Federal Republic of Germany has only existed since 1990 the reunification with the former GDR - and yet Germany's history goes back several thousand years! The video is full of symbolism! The red laser represents the common thread through time! The video jumps back and forth between different eras and is primarily about the dark moments in German history (not just related to the Nazi era)! The woman embodies “Germania”, the personified representation of Germany (similar to the “Statue of Liberty”, the personification of freedom) - always in connection with the German colors: black, red, gold (not yellow)! The “Victorian Boxers” - as you call them - represent the Weimar Republic (1918 - 1933), the first German democracy after the German Emperor Wilhelm II had to abdicate due to the loss of the First World War (1914 - 1918) and moved to the Netherlands Exile went - that was the end of the monarchy! The banknotes raining in the prison refer to the New York stock market crash and the resulting global economic crisis of 1929! The boxers could refer to the recurring unrest and fights between different political groups during this time (the "Kapp-Putsch"/"kapp coup" - which failed and sent the young Hitler to prison where he wrote "Mein Kampf")! The guy who reminds you of "David Hasselhoff" is part of the "RAF" (Red Army Faction) - a radical left-wing terrorist group that terrorized Germany in the 1970s and 80s (“Germania” is taken hostage!) - this included bank robberies , kidnappings and extortions as well as murders of politicians, bankers and industrialists, and later also bombings! The comparison of “burning of witches (between 1550 and 1650)” vs. “burning of books” (Third Reich) and the controversial role of the church at both times! “Hammer and compass” - the national emblem of the socialist GDR - also a symbol of the German division into West and East Germany! The astronaut stands for the first German in space (cosmonaut Sigmund Jähn/1978 GDR)! The GDR was a socialist surveillance state and a dictatorship (the only party was the SED "Socialist Unity Party of Germany"/excerpt from a GDR song: "... the party, the party, it is ALWAYS right...!") - the entire state was a single prison, travel to the “capitalist West” was only possible with special permits for citizens loyal to the state and under certain conditions, but it was easier to travel to the so-called socialist “brother states”! It was forbidden to listen to “West radio” or watch “West television” - but that didn't stop many people from doing so - especially if you lived near the western border! Rammstein addresses this ban in the video “Radio”! There is so much more...!
The black woman portrays the spirit of Germany: Germania. There's a lot of symbolism in this £6.5 million film, showing how the tribes of early Germany came together to defeat a Roman invasion, to the first and second wars, the Red Army Faction or Baader Meinhof terrorists from the 70s, the church devouring the German spirit, the atrocities of the holocaust etc etc. A parody it certainly isn't. There is much to be proud of, but more to be ashamed of.
the 'industrial techno' in the beginning of the song is an homage to "anne clark - our darkness" (esp. the original 1984 version). oh, and since you mentioned depeche mode: rammstein did a cover of their song "stripped" - although that isn't exactly one of their masterpieces.
Found this video after your reaction to The Warning (my favourite band by far). I saw Rammstein in Coventry a year or two back - their live show is awesome - you really should check them out more.
This is not a parody, this is German history, from Roman times until, maybe, the future. The woman is not a black queen, she represents Germany, when she calls, you come. The piano music at the end was "Sonne" also from Rammsten
Thanks for taking the time to comment! I guess parody wasn't the right way to describe it. I think I was noticing some general criticism and the idea of conflict about being proud and ashamed at the same time. Some of the shots were so striking parody was the first word that came to mind but I see that it was more sincere than I originally thought. I've had some suggestions for other videos to check out, more reactions coming soon ✌️
BEST Band in the World ! this was the most expensive music video ever! Live or music videos, they're the best!..after live accident in early career, they decided to be certified pyrotecnictians and do it themselves..Live shows in Paris and Maddison Square Garden were well filmed and recorded.. The outro "Sonne" has a great music video.."Du Hast" live in Paris is a good place to start.. ..they were born in DDR Germany, and the influence is noticible..
The end credits are a piano version of "Sonne" another song I'd suggest you check out. Rammstein is a very artistic band. They understand presentation and music in a very unique way. You should dive deeper. Also try "Ohne Dich" or "Seemann" for some more balladic songs or... well, people will tell you. Greetings from germany and thank you for that nice reaction!
So many other songs to choose from. Zeit. Du Hast. Ich tu dir weh. Angst. Adieu. Radio. Amerika. Til Lindeman's solo stuff is incredible. Zunge. Praise Abort. Seth auf. Fish on. Knebel (good luck finding the un-censored video) 😂 It's a deep and sometimes disturbing Rabbit Hole to dive into.
Germany is on the brink of a big political and social change. So its time to watch and analyse this video with this in mind. Rammstein is live also very impressive: I recommend ich will kein engel sein... oder Ich tut dir weh......both live. Mein Herz Brennt (piano version) is probably my favorite out of the box Rammstein song. Anyway succes and have fun.
hello, sid!! im a massive rammstein fan and i think ur reaction was wonderful! u should definitely check out their live performance from Madison Square Garden of "Engel". imo it's their best one. thxx
This band sets standards in everything they do. Their videos are amazing. Check also Zeit and Adieu. Talking about live performance they are simply one of the best of all time. Definetely worth digging deeper!!!
There is a good analysis/explanation of the scenes in the video: Deutschland by Rammstein: An Analysis Rammstein has been around since 1994 and is an attempt to fuse metal and techno. The videos are just as worth watching as the legendary live shows. The band name alludes to an accident during an air show at the US airbase in Ramstein, the largest air base outside the USA to date (where political meetings on Ukraine are currently taking place, where nuclear weapons were also stored, which was the logistics hub for operations in Iraq and Afghanistan,...). Hence the band's extreme pyrotechnic shows. It was quickly noticed that the allusion to an accident with 70 dead and 1000 injured was not funny and the connection was denied for a long time until photos of the first shows appeared. Rammstein was never at the ESC. The band with the monster costumes was this one: Lordi - Hard Rock Hallelujah - 🇫🇮 Finland - Grand Final - Eurovision 2006 Winner
Even historians had a hard time to get every hint and reference right from the start, so don't worry if you don't get everything from a first reaction, especially as a non German. 🙃 Edit: As you liked the piano at the (someone already mentioned it is a variation of the "Sonne" theme), my honest suggestion for more Rammstein would be a double reaction to both, the original as well as the piano version of *Mein Herz brennt* (in this order). Non Rammstein related, always a reaction worth imho would be -- AnnenMayKantereit - just pick anything really, if you'd feel more comfortable to start with an English song, they have quite a few awsome covers, but I strongly advise to not neglect their original stuff in German. -- Herbert Grönemeyer - Der Weg live 2003 - Mensch Tour (Gelsenkirchen)[Subtitle] -- Lara Fabian - Je suis malade (the upload by Frenchrescue with French and English subtitles) -- Blind Melon - No Rain (Official Video) -- Scorpions - Still loving you -- Heilung - LIFA Krigsgaldr or LIFA In Maidjan (both live at Castlefest, and from their first ever live show, actually)
LOL. Rammstein once did a cover of Depeche Modes "stripped" for the Depeche Mode tribute album "For the Masses". ua-cam.com/video/10JDA8SvwX8/v-deo.html
Good reaction. You should even reacat to live Videos of Rammstein. For example "du hast" in Paris or "Engel" live from madision square garden. Greetings from germany.
Hello, to better understand the video for Deutschland by Rammstein, I recommend the analysis. A very good video about it was: ua-cam.com/video/sc-euVL8xQs/v-deo.htmlsi=XCURLrTVAGfSb0Ju (Deutschland by Rammstein: An Analysis). Maybe someone will find the time to watch it. Even if it's hard to believe, this song makes me sad

Next Germania is pushed in a wheelchair by the band through the Berlin Holocaust Memorial with burning bodies. (Imagine the statue of liberty being shown like that. Sorry couldn't come up with an equivalent image of Britania).

At minute 5:50 you see the riots against refugees homes in the 90's in Hoyerswerda, Rostock, Solingen and Mölln. Molotovs are being thrown and a car is being pushed over with the help of a man dressed in Nazi uniform.

History of Germany
The Channel Three Arrows has an explanation video about 'Deutschland'. If you are interested.
React to more rammstein and you get used to it. And please some live conserts theyre amazing
So many other songs to choose from.
Zeit.
Du Hast.
Ich tu dir weh.
Angst.
Adieu.
Radio.
Amerika.
Til Lindeman's solo stuff is incredible.
Zunge.
Praise Abort.
Seth auf.
Fish on.
Knebel (good luck finding the un-censored video) 😂
It's a deep and sometimes disturbing Rabbit Hole to dive into.
Anyway succes and have fun.
hello, sid!! im a massive rammstein fan and i think ur reaction was wonderful! u should definitely check out their live performance from Madison Square Garden of "Engel". imo it's their best one. thxx
btw, Richard Kruspe is the lead guitarist and Till Lindemann is the singer (u can ask me for more info if u want)
Rammstein (lit. "ramming stone") = RHUM-SHTINE (approx. pronunciation in English)
Deutschland (Germany) = DOYTSH-LHUNT (approx. pronunciation in English)
Thanks for taking the time to comment, appreciate the info ✌️
This band sets standards in everything they do. Their videos are amazing. Check also Zeit and Adieu. Talking about live performance they are simply one of the best of all time. Definetely worth digging deeper!!!
There is a good analysis/explanation of the scenes in the video:
Deutschland by Rammstein: An Analysis
Rammstein has been around since 1994 and is an attempt to fuse metal and techno.
The band with the monster costumes was this one:
Lordi - Hard Rock Hallelujah - 🇫🇮 Finland - Grand Final - Eurovision 2006 Winner
❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
Zeit, angst und adieu sind auch super videos
Even historians had a hard time to get every hint and reference right from the start, so don't worry if you don't get everything from a first reaction, especially as a non German. 🙃
Edit:
As you liked the piano at the (someone already mentioned it is a variation of the "Sonne" theme), my honest suggestion for more Rammstein would be a double reaction to both, the original as well as the piano version of *Mein Herz brennt* (in this order).
Non Rammstein related, always a reaction worth imho would be
-- AnnenMayKantereit - just pick anything really, if you'd feel more comfortable to start with an English song, they have quite a few awsome covers, but I strongly advise to not neglect their original stuff in German.
-- Herbert Grönemeyer - Der Weg live 2003 - Mensch Tour (Gelsenkirchen)[Subtitle]
-- Lara Fabian - Je suis malade (the upload by Frenchrescue with French and English subtitles)
-- Blind Melon - No Rain (Official Video)
-- Scorpions - Still loving you
-- Heilung - LIFA Krigsgaldr or LIFA In Maidjan (both live at Castlefest, and from their first ever live show, actually)
LOL. Rammstein once did a cover of Depeche Modes "stripped" for the Depeche Mode tribute album "For the Masses". ua-cam.com/video/10JDA8SvwX8/v-deo.html
❤❤
Funny that you asked "Who is that?", and then the video answered you.
✌️
there is an explanatory vid
Good reaction. You should even reacat to live Videos of Rammstein. For example "du hast" in Paris or "Engel" live from madision square garden.
Greetings from germany.
👍
Sorry it isn't a Parody 😢 good reaction 😊
Hello, to better understand the video for Deutschland by Rammstein, I recommend the analysis.
A very good video about it was:

(Deutschland by Rammstein: An Analysis).
Maybe someone will find the time to watch it.
Even if it's hard to believe,
this song makes me sad
The video is a 6 million dollar masterpiece.you did choose a difficult song to react.if you want something easier, dicke titte or zick Zack or Amerika.
Sorry, but you have no idea what you're looking at. This is not an insult, just a fact. The song reflects 2000 years of German history.
