    Yes, the criminal partial demolition of BBC TV Centre - the most iconic of the several wonderful (largely regional ITV) studio complexes that have been bulldozed in recent years - e.g. Thames TV at Teddington, ATV/Central in Broad Street, Birmingham, Southern/STV/Meridian's studios at Southampton, HTV's fabulous studios at Culverhouse Cross, Cardiff... and BBC's own Pebble Mill in Birmingham. Terribly, terribly sad... Much loved, and now lost. Great TV production centres, packed with so many wonderfully talented people - all rubbing shoulders, (and more!), in their shared love of the business they delighted, and felt so privileged and lucky, to work in. Thanks for all the memories, of what I think were TV's last golden years. Programmes may be technically better. But can the focused, office-based nature of genre-specialised production companies, just hiring facilities when required, ever match the vibes we enjoyed in these big, fabulous TV factories?

      Not to mention Granada TV in manchester. They lost their soul in the merger.

      Loads of highly expert well paid consultants assured Auntie that they would make loads of money for their coffers if they did this.
      It actually cost them money.

      Totally agree! My few months working at BBC TV Centre in a thirty-plus year TV career working everywhere else, remain a time of pride, and a feeling of privilege to have walked, and worked there, in a place that is iconic, and packed with history and the ghosts of creative genius. I totally loved that experience! Unforgettable!

      They ain't going back either. The plan was that all would be demolished apart from the This Morning studio and the iconic tower block but ITV have had, as they say, too good an offer to refuse and have sold the lot to developers. Another home of post-war popular culture bites the dust.

      @@yellowbelly06 What's with ITV and BBC selling off their studio buildings?

    • @yellowbelly06
      @yellowbelly06 4 роки тому +3

      Scythal partly obsolescence - equipment is smaller and more can now be done on location.
      Partly because there was always over-capacity within ITV - 15 companies each with their own studio centres; two in London and another two within 40 miles of each other (Manchester and Leeds) for example.
      The ‘political’ legacy of dual regions - did the West and Wales, Midlands and the south-east really need two big centres each within 40-50 miles of each other?
      And finally, those that are left now occupy prime building land and therefore are worth more if sold, especially in London - this is why Teddington has gone with Fountain and London Studios to follow.

      @@yellowbelly06 I see..... and what is the deal with MediaCityUK? Why does it exist?

    • @yellowbelly06
      @yellowbelly06 4 роки тому +1

      Scythal as far as I understand it MediaCity is actually owned by a property company, Peel Holdings. At the time the BBC were looking for new studios as the Oxford Road centre was being closed (don’t forget the BBC have shut plenty of facilities down in the last few years: TVC, Pebble Mill, Manchester) and I guess Peel just spotted a gap in the market.
      It coincided with the BBC moving more to the regions (and probably cheaper to lease in Manchester than build new in London anyway) and ITV followed when they left the old Granada site.
      MediaCity is also home to non-media companies and organisations too, reflecting the fact it actually belongs to a property company.

    As of August 2023, the studios at Television Centre are Studio TC1, largest studio at 10,800 Sq Ft and used by many shows such as Saturday Night Takeaway, The Graham Norton Show, The Jonathan Ross Show, The Last Leg. Studio TC2 is a 3,430 Sq Ft studio sub let part of each weekday to ITV Daytime to host Lorraine and Loose Women but can be used by other productions at night and weekends, such as Peston show on ITV and Sunday Brunch on Channel 4. Studio TC3 is a 8,000 Sq Ft studio permanently sub let to ITV Daytime with two permanent sets built into the studio for Good Morning Britain and This Morning. Originally they also planned to keep TC4 another 8,000 Sq Ft studio, but that idea was scrapped fairly quickly. Shame, as Television Centre now needs another medium to large size audience based studio.

      If it's news,yes. I guess there'll be no more passing that familiar frontage if I ever go to another away match at Queens Park Rangers. I thought Fawlty Towers,or at least some of it,was filmed at an actual grand old hotel building somewhere around the Torquay area,which burnt down in a fire some years later.

    • @glenp6301
      @glenp6301 5 років тому +7

      In its capacity as a television centre, it is hardly 'mostly retained'. Less than half of the original studios remain (3 out of the original 8). Plus, the scenery block, most of the dressing rooms, TV offices, etc, are all gone.

So many bright, attractive, and talented people working very close together around the clock... stuff happens!

    ITV revelling in the demise of the BBC?

  • @johnrauner2515
    @johnrauner2515 9 місяців тому

    Yes the place was riddled with asbestos that was going to cost a fortune to remove, and the removal process would be extremely disruptive. But the disruption could be worked around. The BBC had a moral responsibility to retain the TVC in full given it's historical significance to millions around the world. The studios that produced Morcombe & Wise, The Good Life, Fawlty Towers, (just to name a handful) are gone. This is every bit as ill conceived and short sighted as the junkings during the 60's and early 70's when they wiped priceless shows off the face of the earth just to save a few bucks reusing tapes.
    Ironic how history repeats.
    It is criminal this was allowed to happen. But then, Warner Brothers in LA just demolished Warner Brothers ranch, an outdoor suburban street filming lot in central LA. Among other things this lot contained the Bewitched house, the Eight Is Enough House, the Lethal Weapon house, the pool that has been seen in countless productions, the Friends opening sequence foundation and park, the courthouse used for the original Batman And Robin show and seen in countless other productions. And many many more exterior sets.
    So I guess it's not just the UK whose media industry have blood on their hands. They value nothing, not even their own heritage. What more needs to be said about these people?
    Snakes eating their own tails.
