I have wondered if any woman would take the torch from Ella, Etta, Dinah or Sarah. Well, this magnificent young lady has picked up that torch and is running with it. She is a generational talent.

I think that torch has been taken up by several great female jazz vocalists since the 1980s, including Carol Kidd, Diane Schuur, Dianne Reeves, Cassandra Wilson, Eliane Elias, Nneena Freelon, Carmen Lundy, Carmen Bradford, Eva Cassidy, Christy Baron, Sarah K., Diana Krall, Jane Monheit, Tierney Sutton, Valerie Joyce, Stacey Kent, Cheryl Porter, Catherine Russell, Angela Hagenbach, Roberta Gambarini, and Cecile McLorin Salvant. They just haven't received much coverage from the mainstream music press.
Certainly Samara Joy follows in that proud tradition and is carrying the torch forward.
For me, she reminds me more to Billie Holiday. For no doubt, she's a great talent.
such JOY (pun intended) to discover Samara's voice and its timeless quality... alongside with Emmet's music & friends.

Samara's velvety voice takes us back to the early days of jazz with the likes of Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday and zooms us back into the present and into the future. She's an old soul reborn. Her sweet voice fits like a glove with this genre

Don't think I ever complimented Russell Hall on his bass playing. I'll say, Hall's the best bass player I've ever heard.

Samara sings in the effortless, joyful, soulful way of Billie Holiday- she doesn't sound like Lady Day, but she's in that Zone to my ear- her voice has a maturity too. Pleasant to see a young woman wearing ordinary clothing, not gyrating in front of a line of similarly half naked, over made up so-called, back-up singers. This is Music. Everybody "relates", look relaxed and I can't express myself well- they "just DO IT" - she will go far with her controlled voice, octave? range- and lovely tone- I LOVE MUSIC, ALL GENRES BUT I CAN'T WRITE ABOUT IT WITH THE CORRECT TERMS! These fine folks moved me though, esp Samara- such a pretty name...Namaste. New fan from Canada.

Can't count how many times i have listened to this one. Easily the best contemporary voice and this recording is just sensational. Huge fan of both her and Emmet.
Samara is very good here, but she has gotten even better since then. The trio is also very good, especially Emmet Cohen on piano. I haven't heard this trio previously, but intend to check out more of their recordings.
