Given the format of the kick, what choice do we have? Line up like a normal kickoff and just kick it to yourself? Everybody would do that every time
The kicking team can already pick the ball up if it lands in the landing zone and the receiving team doesn’t get it.

The lions had a plethora of reasons why they were even in that position . I didn't like the call but idk why this the one topic the media is using to discuss the loss. The bills were averaging 8 yards per play and were talking about Dan going for an onside kick a few minutes sooner than what's conventional.

For real. I thought the onside kicks made total sense because we have to give ourselves a chance to make up multiple scores. The only question I took away from this game is wondering whether we still have enough talent in who's left on our defense to continue to play well. I fully believe in DC and AG to squeeze every drop of talent they can.

If players can't move until ball lands or is touched... and if it is a flag if it doesn't land in the landing zone or goes to the 30 if it goes past it. The Steelers punted against the Eagles with over 10 minutes left in the game, pinned them back at their own 2, and never touched the ball again.
Giving the Bills a short field practically guarantees you'll see the ball again. That means another chance at points and another chance at an onside kick.
The Lions were always going to need to recover an onside kick to have a shot. Taking an early onside kick simply gives them 2 shots at it.

I like Dan Campbell's aggressive calls on offense, especially considering how beat up the defense is. Going for it on 4th down and keeping the ball out of the hands of the Packers offense is what won the Lions the game last week. They were, statistically, the right decisions (except for maybe that one on our own 30 yard line).
That being said, I don't see the logic in going for the on-side kick. Under the current rules, recovering an on-side kick is a 1% chance at best. It's such a high risk play that you should only go for an on-side kick if you have zero other options. As depleted as the Lions defense is right now, trusting the defense is still a MUCH higher percentage decision than the on-side kick.
There's a difference between gutsy calls and mathematically incorrect calls. For as much criticism as Dan Campbell gets, his calls are usually both. But this one was all guts, no math.

I think that comes from him being a player first and a coach 2nd. But I do think sometimes his bravado can be called into question but then again look at what he has done with this team and where he has them?! Those players believe in their coach and that coach believes in his players? When a starter gets hurt, well he is out and we have so and so and we believe he can get it done? So it's the next man in line to step up and get the job done. And Campbell has been very good at that next man in line mentality with this team. I'm not a Lions fan but whatever Campbell is preaching the players are buying and he has turned that team around. Kudos to Dan Campbell over the last few years and give em hell Coach!

Honestly, I believe it was their only choice.
Best case scenario if you kick it deep is your defense gets a miraculous 3 and out and you get the ball back with like 10 minutes left. After a good 5 minute drive to score a touchdown you again are faced with a choice. Kick it deep and hope for another miraculous stop or go for an onside kick that pretty much instantly loses if you fail it. Worst case scenario is what the Eagles did to the Steelers when they punted it away with over 10 minutes left. The Steelers never touched the ball again. Arguably the most likely option is that the Bills take 5 minutes to score a touchdown and now you're in a 3-score hole with only 6 minutes left instead of 11.
If you go for the onside kick with 12 minutes left and you fail, the short field reduces the Bills' ability to waste clock on a long touchdown drive, you give up on the defensive hail mary 3 and out, and you probably get the ball back with about 10 minutes or so down 3 scores. Honestly, what happened in the game was the best possible failing outcome for them. The Bills took almost no time off the clock at all because of the return to the 5 and the touchdown on the next play.

I think it was the best choice in the moment. The choices were: 1. you kick like usual and you hope for a 3 and out (unlikely based on the rest of the game) or a long drive that could extend their lead OR 2. you kick it onside and chance getting the ball really quickly or they get the ball and score really quickly. The most likely thing to happen either way was the Bills get the ball and score the choice was how much time you wanted to leave on the clock after they score.

  • @ghxst.6494
    @ghxst.6494 5 годин тому

the outcome of that play is probably the 3rd best thing that could've happened for the lions and here's why:
normal kickoff - bills get the ball at their own 30 (i'm just assuming touchback for simplicity), then march down the field and score 7 points, running the clock down to let's assume 7:00 (they'd probably run a bit more but i'm kind of biasing it in the lions favor to further make the other options look even better when you think how realistically this would be much worse)
lions recover onside - obviously the best case, do i even have to explain?
bills recover onside and down it right there - this is 4th best case, pretty much same as normal kick but let's say they only run clock down to around 9:00
bills recover onside and get a great return - 3rd best (and what actually happened), they get a great return and score quickly, lions get ball with 11:51
bills recover onside and score - 2nd best option, would run the least time possible
i understand why it's a controversial call, but there's a chance that without this play the game ends 45-28 or potentially even 38-28 without the lions ever having a chance for a comeback which they almost ended up pulling off, with the final score being 48-42
edit: i should add that i'm ignoring the chance the bills only score a field goal, while i know that is possible, every time josh allen had the ball in his hands it very much seemed to be a case of unstoppable force meets moveable object, so a touchdown was the most likely outcome

If they kick it deep the guys on the onside line have to wait just like the downfield guys. No need to declare onsides. Only issue is the macafee style onside where you kick it yourself. The problem I have with changing onside rules to a 4th and 20 type thing is that it would be fair and unbiased. A team that is lead by their offense would have an unfair advantage over a team lead by their defense. Telling the Trent Dilfer lead Ravens they have to get a 4th and 20 for an onside is way different than telling the Tom Brady and Randy Moss lead Patriots. Not for anything they’ve earned, because the NFL changed the onside rules to be reliant on your offense after spending the last decade building a team through high draft picks, free agents, and a defensive coordinator as the head coach. I say whichever team wants to onside kick has to spin a roulette wheel and each spend costs $100k of your cap space next season and it’s added to your opponent’s cap space for next season. You want to do something safe and exciting this is the way to do it.

If we want to take the unexpected out of the game let the offense tell the defense I'm doing this and the defense tell the offense I'm doing this? I don't know why Campbell went with that choice but when teams want to try something outside of the norm they shouldn't have to tell the other team what is about to happen? because under current rules... players can't move until ball hits the landing zone or end zone, or opposite team touches it. So if you can't move until ball lands... how can either team attempt to defend or attack a surprise onside kick? Because they are so close as well... only 5 yards apart. Also, it is a flag if the ball doesn't land in the landing zone under normal kicks. So if you onside kick it and it doesn't land in the landing zone is it a flag? All the new kick off rules makes it pretty much impossible to do an onside fairly without announcing it before... and yes it is stupid. They never should have changed the kickoff rules to what it is now. If anything just move the kicker back 15 or 20 more yards from how it used to be so they couldn't just boot it out the end zone every time.

    Lions' D was unreliable.
Bills' QB was going to score yet another TD, or at least a FG, if Dan did a regular kick to the Bills.

are you allowed to line drive an onside kick into the other team? just really tee off and hope for a deflection? never seen it done and have always wondered.

Was the onside kick reckless or Dan Campbell being Dan Campbell?
    Yes

Campbell should have done another onside kick the next time he had to kick the ball, if he got that one he wouldn't have needed to try to do it with only 12 seconds left. And if he didn't get that one either it would have been a shorter field for Buffalo and they wouldn't have chewed up 6 minutes of clock time.
