I’m so glad I found this video! I’m making some faux fur ears for a cosplay and had started tracing my pattern out onto the back of my fabric, but I’m glad I thought to do a little more research and realize “Oh duh, I need to make sure the fur will be going in the direction I want” It seems like an obvious thing but sometimes I can get overly excited about a project and just jump in without thinking about stuff like that so watching this definitely saved me a lot of frustration (and money for replacement fur XD)
I make puppets, and about 70% of them are done with faux fur. I actually made a video about cutting faux fur (not linking, not trying to self promote) and I can tell you that using an exact knife or a hobby razor are hands down the best way to cut faux fur. There's WAY less chance that you'll cut the fibers underneath. She has great tips about cutting down the fibers for the thick pile when you're sewing on a machine! I do this for any clothing. For the puppets, I have to sew the fur by hand, since any seams would bulge when laid on top of the foam. I actually use a bone folder to tuck the fibers in when I'm sewing long pile. You just run it down the side and it tucks everything in and out of the way. This is a great video, and it was on my list of stuff to make. Happy to have this to point commenters to. I've recommended other commenters to your channel in the past. Great channel, and I need to follow your example and upload more often! ❤
I was going to mention using a razor to cut out the material also. I didn't learn this trick in time to make the squirrel I did for halloween, but I'm ready for next time. I'll also use a table cloth!
Love, love, love this. I bought faux fur and a pattern and almost returned it to the fabric store until I saw this video. I was a little intimidated but now I’m ready to make my project.
I almost didn't watch because I have worked with faux fur to make toys, but you had some good tips I didn't know. I've been putting off making a jacket with some really nice fur I bought. Maybe this will be what it takes to get me started. Thanks.
i really enjoyed watching this tutorial! i just got back into sewing since january and i create canvas totebags and make up pouches and i just learned how to make infinity scarfs. i would LOVE to do an infnity scarf in faux fur and make a cool vest to go with it! thanks for this wonderful tutorial!
amazing tip for you for fur cutting ****don't use sizers**** cut the pattern with an * exacto knife* on the back side of the fabric this way you will not tuch any of the fur ! :D
Good to see this! I’ve been sewing for about 13 years now but I have yet to sew faux fur, and I’m actually making a Cruella de Vil coat for cosplay. 😅 but this makes me feel more confident to do it! Thanks!😊
I got a great tip at a fabric store...when using faux fur and any other squishy fabric, use a needle and thread to indicate where your markings are. Just pull a 3 inch piece of thread through each dot.
we don't but it would basically be the same method of putting in a separating zipper on woven fabric. The one change I would make is doing a straight stitch on the zipper seam lines prior to installation to keep the area stable and not stretch when sewing.
In the 1970s, there was a popular (and expensive) faux suede that was used in high-end garments. It was rather thick and was available for the home sewing market as well. Do you know where this fabric can be purchased today (Jo-Ann's Fabrics and Crafts isn't an option) and can you publish a video using the sewing techniques for this fabric? Thank you.
A Vintage Vanity Its going to be so fab!! It was a red&black coat far too large for me that I ended up cropping to be more of a shrug, and its gonna have a beret to match as a lil set! I think Im gonna use black pleather as the band fabric since the beret itself is red w/ a black undercoat ♥️
Yes I used my afternoon off to cut out the fur. Definitely took my time. And OMG - the fuzz everywhere! But it's for a good cause :) This coat is going to look amazing. @@ProfessorPincushion
Faux fur killed my singer sewing machine . One of my daughters killed it when she was making a Care Bear costume 15 years ago.Smoke came out of the pedal. I still haven't had it fixed. Now I sew by hand.
I think it would depend on the type of faux fur and what quality of sewing machine you have on whether the machine can handle it. The fur I used in this demonstration is not very thick and really no differently than sewing with fleece.
No, you want to cut the fabric with a razor blade, craft knife or scalpel. That way, you get little fur going everywhere. My Mother was a skilled seamstress and worked in a Tailors. She worked with real fur which she despised with a vengeance. It was her job, she had to do it, she didn't have to like it. She used one sided razor blades. I still have 2 of hers used up until fur became a big no no, both US made, both still cut fine. She also used them to reduce the seams as the fur was actually quite easy to remove from the pelt. She worked with very expensive furs, not that it mattered to her, she did not like fur to be used for fashion. She didn't appear to mind so much to those who relied on fur because of there severe weather, Innuit or indigenous peoples, definitely not fashion, killing to look pretty... ugh

I am so glad to find this video.
Do you have a video on how to sew a separating zipper on a stretchy knit bustier? Or on stretchy knit fabric??
we don't but it would basically be the same method of putting in a separating zipper on woven fabric. The one change I would make is doing a straight stitch on the zipper seam lines prior to installation to keep the area stable and not stretch when sewing.
This video is such a blessing.
Thanks. What thread size and kind (poly, cotton, nylon?). Thanks
How do you glue a waterproof fabric to it?
Wear a mask so you don't inhale the faux fur, especially if the hairs are really fine
Can a faux fur vest be lined? What is the best way to do it?
this will help alot!!! thank you!!!

just wondering if i was to make a plush blanket with faux fur would i be able to make it with just a sewing machine??
sure! just clean out the machine after this project. All those loose fibers get caught up inside.
Genius tips - that’s brilliant thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
I think Prof is watching me, I used faux fur dead stock to make a beret for the first time just last night 😂
Gasp!!! Why have I never thought of that! I need to make one now! :D
One of the next sewing projects I have planned is a Faux Fur coat for a little girl....spooky

thank you! so useful!
Well this was timely. My next project is a faux fur jacket!
nice! give yourself plenty of time because there's nothing worse than working with faux fur when you're stressed out :)

I should've watched this video before I was half way through my project

I have used the razor in an old fashioned box cutter or you can use the new razor sutters they sell for trimming wallpaper.
