Preview by Ajay Pal Singh
After losing the Test series 0-2 at home, Sri Lanka will be eager to bounce back in the ODI format. They missed qualification for the upcoming Champions Trophy and have a point to prove that they still belong in the top league. The ODI series opener between Sri Lanka and Australia will be played at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Wednesday (February 12).
Australia will be without some of their key players, including regular skipper Pat Cummins, who is out injured, and Marcus Stoinis, who has recently announced his retirement from ODI cricket.
Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Marsh are also out due to injuries. Not just for this series, these four players are also unavailable for the Champions Trophy. Sean Abbott, Cooper Connolly, Jake Fraser-McGurk, and Ben Dwarshuis have been included.
For this ODI series, Spencer Johnson and Tanveer Sangha are also part of the squad, apart from the 11-man squad that will feature in the upcoming Champions Trophy in Pakistan and Dubai.
Sri Lanka, on the other hand, have named a strong 16-man squad for the home series against Australia. Charith Asalanka will lead the hosts.
Pathum Nissanka and Avishka Fernando are the likely openers for Sri Lanka. Kusal Mendis, who has performed well recently, will bat at number three.
Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana are the two spin twins available to trouble the Aussies in the middle overs. Dunith Wellalage and Janith Liyanage add to the all-round strength.
Lahiru Kumara, Asitha Fernando, Mohamad Shiraz, and Eshan Malinga are the four pace bowlers in the mix for Sri Lanka.
