In Finland We have about 2 million SAUNAS - Thanks to Lakes & long shore line - and Islands ! The Water is always " cool " - so someone came up with a FIRE in a House Building ! Fireplace with Kiuas - as We call it ! SAUNA is a STATE OF MIND - just like Yoga !

This is extremely helpful. I've played it several times. The first time, I paid attention to the English subtitles more -- being a beginner, that seemed like the best thing for me to do. But after that, I mostly just read the Finnish while listening to you. Hearing a language spoken, even when one doesn't understand it, is not only a lesson in pronunciation but imparts a sense of the rhythm of the language. This is very important for comprehension. Plus, I'm starting to remember some words and some endings.
By the way, you haven't aged a day in at least 5 years. You're also the most graceful human being, of any gender, I've ever seen.

Greetings from a Finn in Poland to Finland and Poland.
Many of my Finnish teachers and sources on the Internet have always reported about this "sisu" and I could never really imagine what that might be. Now I've seen it with my own eyes. The teacher who had lost her sisu came out of the hot sauna and quarreled with "where is my Finnish sisu when I need it?" "I'm like a huge wuss" and than out of the nothing like a Nordic miracle yksi kaksi kolme ... the sisu came back and she jumped into the ice-cold lake and bounced like a ballerina ... that was impressive and inspired me because my teachers - these are actually warm sauna cabins that teach me so much interesting things in a pleasant atmosphere but then - I suddenly stand in front of a beautiful but 8 ° C cold lake and that is the Finnish language herself! If only I had a little bit of this sisu ...

If I could I would have loved to join you. But I have no time... I hope that some day I can buy my own cottage and spend my summers in Suomi. I would start the day off with some good bakery and coffee, heat up the sauna, take a swim, sauna and may go fishing and for lunch afterwards. And in the afternoon picking berries until Im sick. And of course, enjoying a good book in the candle light in the evening- With this view... Well. Lets get back to work 😒

Terve! Can you show us how to go grocery shopping in Finland? Maybe go through some vocab words, point out some differences from shopping in the US vs Suomi?
I’m from Finland but I moved to America 4 years ago. I’m moving back to Finland this summer but I’m not so fluent in Finnish anymore, so just listening to this helps a little.

I love the heitetään talviturkki saying and I will definitly write that down to remember it for next kesä when i will take my first dip, since I already have this year haha. I also really liked the small kärpässieni bit, to know the names of things I see around me in the forest :D

It's my second time watching this ☺️ I like to hear you talk, and that lake and cabin are just so perfect. But I heard there are tons of mosquitoes in Finland, and mosquitoes LOVE me 😭 so that's my biggest worry about going to Finland 😅

Wow, I am so proud of you, there is a lot to engage with there; I'm not sure you stayed in the sauna long enough....you said it was cold walking to the lake; when I went to summer cottage and took sauna, going into the water was not cold because of the hot sauna, but you have to stay in the sauna for a while for that to work.

Phenomenally awesome! The sunset was at approximately 11:00pm (?). It kinda reminds me of Grännäs Hotel in Nauvo, Finland which I visited last year.

This reminds me a lot of where I live in Northern Wisconsin of the US
Yeah I'd imagine. It's quite similar to parts of upstate NY too minus all the mountains :D
if I recall correctly that's the area where most finns emigrated, maybe they wanted something similar to home. Or just coincidence? No idea.

I love to listen to the Finnish language. It gives me comfort. My late Dad was Finnish, I miss him so much.
Aw, practically made my heart ache when you were going down the path to the mökki: we had to cancel our trip to Finland for the summer cottage, for the obvious reason.
But your reaction to the lake water was a laugh - mennään saunaan nopeasti!

My dad calls summer camp / cottage, “kesahuvila “(sp?). Outhouse is “paskatalo” ... Not sure if this is just an older way of speaking Finn or a Canadian Finnish creation from way back.
We love Sauna and löyly here too.

I live in Los Angeles CA and never go in the water here even when the weather is really hot because the water is too cold. But in Hawaii the water temperature is the same as the air. Perfect.

That was not swimming! It was a 2 seconds dip with your head above the water line. It doesnt count as shredding the winter fur!

Kat, I think you said the sauna was 70, that is probably not hot enough for you to then go outdoors and go swimming in the way that it is more fun/comfortable; probably need 80-90, or some would say a little hotter; of course you have to stay hydrated. After you get really hot and sweat, then getting in the lake will feel good. I am an American who studied in Finland many years ago; I had never taken a sauna before going to Finland...it is a learned ability to withstand the higher temperatures and stay in there until you really sweat and are hot, and sort of cleansed.....sort of a cathartic feeling; of course you have to be careful not to become dehydrated. Then afterwards, you will want a cold shower or cold lake, or at least cool and will not be so timid about going into the lake. Finland was a very special place when I was there, as it was more isolated; there are pros and cons to that for the Finnish people.

I think you can find it in places like Clas Ohlson, Tokmanni, Biltema ... these sorts of places I'd imagine :D

Well the basic one would be "kippis" - then there is "skool" which comes from the Swedish "skål"
Umm perhaps some people would use "Hölökyn kölökyn" or at least in songs they say that sometimes haha! I'm not 100% what the one you spelled out would be though
