Go behind the scenes with David and the team as we work with prize-winning cattle and the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders, in downtown Dallas. Before venturing out into the true wild of West Texas, to work with authentic cowboys alongside Victoria’s Secret model Josie Canseco and Game of Thrones star Nathalie Emmanuel.
The first part of the shoot involved shutting down a large part of the East Quarter of Dallas and working with prize-winning Longhorn cattle as well as the world-famous Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders.
Next, we headed out into the Wild West basing ourselves in Marfa, a ranching community known mainly as the filming location for the 1956 western “Giant”.
“Location scouting is not something I like to delegate as I consider it to be the most personal of pursuits. Martin Scorsese rarely subcontracts this core part of the job, so it would be most precious if I were to do so. It’s analogous to hosting a dinner in an expensive restaurant and then asking your guests to choose your entrée whilst you visit the bathroom. Your companions may be familiar with your dislikes, but will have a less precise intimacy with what you fancy on that very evening. I cannot think of an activity that I conduct with a greater pedantry than location scouting. I grip it as tightly as I would the gangway of a ship in rocky seas.”
For these shoots we enlisted the help of Nathalie Emmanuel and Josie Canseco to play to the lore of the Wild West. Alongside them was a fabulous retired basketball player from Brooklyn - Ron Sanford - who stands a mighty 6 foot 9 inches tall and had the looks and wisdom of someone who had lived all of his 73 years to the absolute full. He was made for basketball, but also made for David’s staged work. To add further narrative, we had a crew of working cowboys and prize-winning Longhorn cattle on stand by and indeed a 150-year-old wagon.
A Snippet from David’s words from Texas:
“One evening, after a few whiskies in a rundown bar, my driver, fixer and friend - Rozy - jumped into what he thought was his white Ford Chevrolet station wagon to drive back to our hotel. The car started and I sorted out some appropriate Robert Earl Keen music about guns and drugs, whilst Rozy took a puff or six of something that looked vaguely illegal. The music blasted and we headed off into the dark Texas night.
A few minutes in, it appeared to me that something wasn’t right. For one, my map wasn’t on the dashboard (my nickname on tour is ‘Maps’, as I never go anywhere without one), and secondly the passenger seat didn’t appear to be in quite the right position. But these seemed like minor details and I let Rozy drive on into the night. A mile on and I was still to get comfortable as it felt my arse was sitting on a hard-edged object. Rozy pulled over and I sat up and turned back to look at my seat - the problem was simply that I had been sitting on a handgun. We had taken the wrong white Chevy and the rightful owner had not only left his keys in the car, but his pistol, too.
A cursory check determined that the gun was loaded and I gingerly put it in the glove box as we drove back to the saloon. It struck me that there were two binary outcomes from here - the owner had discovered his vehicle had been stolen and would be about to kill us both with another gun, or that he was still drinking at the bar and our mistake might have gone undetected. The probability of it being the former clearly increased with every lost second and Rozy has never driven anywhere faster in his life.
Our white Chevy was where we had left it and next to it was the gap which we had left a few minutes earlier. No one was outside the saloon and we quickly parked up, jumped cars and drove off as quickly as we had returned. The whole round trip was no more than five minutes, but perhaps five of the luckier minutes of my life.”

he gets up to $100,000 PER PRINT for wildlife work so he's highly motivated. Just called a gallery that carries them to find that info. For cheerleaders and livestock maybe Txans will pay it. Yuck IMO
