You can use java fern in goldfish tanks, they won't chew it, but it should be attached to a rock as they rot if placed in substrate.

these are good plants that wont get eaten by goldfish but they are very slow growers which means they dont use up very much nitrate

LUKE!! I HAVE THE PLANT SUGGESTIONS!! All from dustins fish tanks.
Firstly, I keep all my plants alive with regular LED white light stick on strips lol. They surprisingly grow well in my 75g (same dimensions as yours).
There are ofc some plants that do better with goldfish than others (I think it's because they don't like the taste of the leaf or something/ the leaves hang on tighter). Heres what I have found:
-First to filter the water directly: get anubis nana HAS TO BE NANA! I have two types of anubis - Nana grow extremely fast in my goldfish tanks with my mid-tier light. Their roots grow huge and filter well. Goldfish CANT TOUCH them at all. Theyre strong as heck!
-Avoid water whisteria/sprites and ALTERNANTHERA at all costs. They get shredded so fast it isn't even funny.
-Amazon swords/ java fern grew very well.
-Anything 'ludwig' especially the brown leaf. They did very well with my big ranchu and orandas when I planted them in thick clusters. Makes a huge difference when you plant in thick clusters.
-Ludwig arcuate grew extremely fast in my tank. It almost took over. I thought my goldfish would destroy it, but NO. I guess they just don't like the taste. This plant will DOMINATE and filter your aquarium well! Grows fast and very low matinence. They thurst for power.
-The Yellow flame (BACOPA CAROLINIANA) also grew huge and the gold fish didn't touch it. It also spread fast.
-THere is one more but I cant figure out what it is. Ill try to reply to my comment with it because I like this one the best.
BTW: I have 3 inches of sand for my substrate with 1 inch of gravel under it. I only water change once every 2 weeks and can most of the time get away with waaaaay longer ( 3 adult fancy gold fish live in there). My water parameters stay extremely good for a long time with 0 ammonia or nitrite. THeres about 20-30ppm nitrate by time I change the water. This is also because my plants have been dominating for the past 6ish months. Using root tabs (buying them in bulk for the cheapest price off amazon) is basically 99% needed to get them growing and thriving.

my reccomendation is any terrestrial plant that has the leafs above the water because they have unlimeted access to co2 from the air and can therefor grow alot quicker and consume alot more nitrates, in my tanks i have a pepper plant and a coleus plant with jsut the roots sticking down into the water and it works great for me so id reccomend it, also the pepper plant comes with the added benefit of growing food for you (if you like peppers)

You could check into a hydroponic system. I have a friend who has a few fish tanks that he cycles constantly through his hydroponic setup. The fish waste feeds the plants, and by the time it circulates back into the tank it is fresh clean water again.

Hey Luke, I saw you wanted a possible plant. I put Java fern or other type of fern, just rubber band them to a rock, drop it in, and my fish dint seem to eat them. And since Java fern dosn’t go in the substrate. It takes more stuff out of the water than a normal plant.

  • @jorgesilva3500

I had it severely reduced by having a long plant potter from Lowe’s I put a lot of gravel and then had my phothos plants potted inside. I then put a water pump filter but took the filter out that way all the waste goes threw the plant potted on one side , on the opposite end there is a hole where it goes back down to the main tank.

  • @phoenixford906

A plant you could use is bacopa/moneywart. It's a stem plant with tough leaves. Also limnophila sessiliflora is a good one, the leaves aren't very tough but grows super fast. Rotala rotundifolia is the same way. I would also try floating some water sprite in the tank, and duckweed of course. I can send you some of each if you have a P.O. box or smth.

In order to create a goldfish tank that requires a lot less water changes you would need thick substrate, I would do the walstad method, that’s what I have done with my small goldfish tank. And you would need a large body of water with little bio load, probably like 1 goldfish for every 50 gallons of water. And then lots of plants! Plant suggestions are java fern, Anubias, crypts, bamboo, and a plant that I forgot the name of 😅 you can see it in my 20 gallon goldfish tank in my videos on my channel! (I know goldfish need more than 20 gallons, he’s a baby though. He should be getting upgraded to a 60 gallon with a couple of goldfish friends later this year!) I want to buy Oreo from you for a friend for Squid my goldfish when I setup my 60 gallon planted goldfish tank! 😁

    • @DemonicBeans

So, this is how I maintained a low maintenance goldfish aquarium.
Plants: Hornwort. That's all. That's the only plant I could keep with goldfish.
It grows like crazy. It doesn't need to be rooted. The goldfish aren't nuts about eating it.
Gravel: About 3 inches, I had a plant soil underneath, but likes I said, I didn't have any plants rooted because the goldfish pulled them up.
Tank mates: Spotted dojo/weather loach. They get along in similar water conditions to spotted to goldfish. The will keep the sub straight stirred up better than the goldfish do on their own. They also eat any sort of invertebrate that ends up in your tank. I also always felt they cleaned my goldfish. I saw them 'nibble' at the fish, but never hurt them. I had fewer fish get sick after I introduced a dojo. Just make sure you have a sinking food, and a place for them to hide.
Filter: Always used bio wheel filters. You can hack the filter and put your own medium in them (the cartridges can be hard to find anyway). Plant some plants in it. Clean the debris out of the filter every so often. You never need to replace that wheel though. Just let the wheel do its thing.
Water: Culture the water with water from one of your tanks when setting up a new tank. Add your salt. Add your plants. Leave it a month before adding your fish.
Oh, and leave the algae on the sides and back.

I'd suggest amazon sword or java fern but for the amazon sword I use sand substrate (play sand from lowes, thoroughly washed until water is clear and inspected for foreign objects too) with a little bit of the little black active bio substrate balls underneath the sand and some root tabs. However it will require more caution as you clean the bottom of the tank. The plants are too strong, goldfish can't really break off pieces. Hell my silver dollars can't even break down the amazon sword in their tank right now hahaha, and those fish are literally piranhas with human like teeth that devour most plants. If you add plants for the love of god quarantine the plants for the first week or two with anti parasite meds because most plants come with hitch hikers and will need a quarantine before coming to the main tank. trust me, you don't want the pests in your main tank, its a nightmare to deal with. It doesn't matter if the seller swears they are pest free, quarantine them.

Honestly less fish to tank ratio is going to make the most difference, but I know with you being a breeder luke is not ideal.
Java fern and anubis is too big for goldfish to eat, but they will eat the flower of the anubis if it blooms which is a minor pain as the spores get everywhere. Invertabretes are the main way I keep my tank maintence down, freshwater mussels love dirty tanks you could toss a half dozen in the bottom of each tank, just make sure they aren't the kind that have the parasitic offspring that go into fish gills, I believe clams don't do this but I'm not sure. Rabbit snails are also great, they breed slowly and take a long time before they overwhelm a tank, and honestly I sell the axcess as they are well sought out for where I live and go for a decent price, the other is freshwater shrimp, fantastic little cleaners but I'm sure they'll just get eaten. Good luck Luke, love your vids from here in Australia XD
