- GR Yaris Long Term Review - Owning + Tuning
With 3000 miles under the belt of the GR Yaris, and a fair few modifications and development work carried out we thought it was time for an update!
So what do we think of the apple of every automotive journalists eye after actually owning one?

Great little car! Stoked to see what can be done with it with a bigger turbo and proper ECU tuning!
3 cylinder! Big $$$
Loving the GR Yaris, the mods are all great. Toyota’s have always had god manual gearboxes, especially the 90’s era cars, I’ve owned a few gen6 Celicas and was always impressed with the gear change on them.
Test drove one for about 25 minutes and I'm so in love
The way it just goes and how it feels to sit in is even better than a Lamborghini Huracan or Porsche 911 Carrera S
Better in what sense?
Did a 1500 mile road trip in mine back in the summer...
Over from Bristol up though South Wales two days north Wales up to Yorkshire Dale's and then down though peak district...
Amazingly capable car....
Spoke to guy who sold it to me last week re servicing and his first question was do you want to sell it... he had moved two on at 38k.
My answer was... no... why would I do that!?
Hour and a half out in the country this morning in cool air reaffirmed why I will never sell this car!!
Competent understand!
The highest praise from the guys who know what they are talking about 👌
Good to know you did the JB4. Haven't heard of anyone getting one though. Would love to see some more about it before committing, what PIDs can be logged and how do the logs they look like etc.
JB4 is usually all about the community, please chip in on the forums (gr-zoo is now the main (uk) one) or comment here if anyone reading has experience with it. Thanks!
Out in mine last night on tight demanding roads and to be honest, the only thing I found lacking was me🤣.
Really enjoy these reviews, will get into one of these at some point but having too much fun in a Stelvio QV
I’ve done 12500 smiling miles, major service booked for tomorrow, £375.00 it’s got much more economical and certainly a bit quicker since it’s loosened up. it looks great when it’s filthy. Bonkers A and B road performance. It’s a circuit pack pearl white car It’s so focused you never think about a stereo or heated sets etc etc. Less is definitely more.
i’m stoked the gr corolla is now coming to the usa
Very nice bit of kit 👌 I recently fitted a short shift on my M135i got it from Canada 👍
Terry Burger is a great guy. In 2010 I bought a 2009 135 and my girlfriend bought a 2011 135. We went to Terry Burgers house and he installed the intakes and the JB3 I think. He had both cars completed in 45 min. I have to say he is a very nice guy.
Love my convenience pack, only 7 days old but it turns so many heads and the addition of the heads up display and JBL speakers just add a bit luxury to a raw car.
Con pack - wow, now that's rare 😂
@@relentlesspursuit6894 Youre right, and when it gets front and rear diffs it will be the most desirable. Ha ha.
In all seriousness it's fucking mint. The heads up display is awesome and the JBL stereo is punchy. As a daily its far better than the circuit pack with 101% of the performance and 95% of the handling performance.
@@Stringwar but nobody wants the con pack! Have you priced up the Toyota diffs - looking over 5k
@@relentlesspursuit6894 I'm not even sure that you're mature enough to own a car. The way you go on and on and on about the convenience pack is like a guy who criticises his best mates wife who's far fitter than any women he could ever get. Enjoy your Circuit pack....if you've actually got one, i celebrate the fact that you have a great car, I don't get my kicks from little sociopathic comments. Enjoy life my friend and be nice because karma will get you in the end.
@@Stringwar it doesnt change the fact you have a con pack - why buy the car on the first place, if your going to buy the watered down version? If you want comfort and toys, Audi & Merc are probably better suited, the Toyota toys are not even any good, the JBL is very poor - far better off just upgrading the stock system.
Great vid thanks, I’m on waiting list here in NZ but no idea how long. We get the Japanese spec circuit pack + comfort pack. Many other reviewers have talked about the seating position being too high, how have you found that?
Ah jealous of getting both in one!
Seat could be lower yes, may look at some form of different seat
Awesome update. Love this car. Just fitted a strut brace to the front of mine which has give the car better feel on turn in. Can't wait to hear more about the tune you guys are working on. Cheers
huh considering how many M cars you've probably driven saying the Yaris has that good of a shifter is a serious compliment. I like how y'all use MSS kits, from what I've seen on your vids, and read online, the design just seems to be an all around win.
All my German's cars have had 2nd rate shifters compared to Japanese cars, specifically Hondas. Though I've never owned a Toyota manual, I can only assume it's better than my BMWs of the past, which have all been "notchy" in feel.
@@gpaje Porsche has the true god shifters, BMWs suck
@@gpaje It's better than the M2C shifter in the GR Yaris but still far from a Honda S2000. Cayman shifters are good, better than BMW but not as mechanical and clicky as the GR Yaris but the S2000 shift is the best i have ever experienced so far and the shortest stock shifter i have ever touched. Some say the NSX shifter is even better, but haven't got the chance to test it yet.
I had no idea the JB4 was coming out for the GRY, hopefully a more affordable option to the Syvecs/Motec systems?
Clocked nearly 6k in my stock GRY, still absolutely loving it! 😍
Hope to have more info soon, enjoying our beta unit and have had great success with JB4 in the past on BMWs. Really are a good unit with all their capabilities.
@@EvolveAutomotive heard the valve springs need to be upgraded before any mods. Is that true?? Big $$ job to do...
Great video 🙂 Love the sounds from 5.36 as well 😎 Would love to order the intake for mine!
Awesome content as always, love this car,. Very helpful to see how it stacks up with the hype on a longtermbasis.
Congratulations on 100K subs
Lovely ride
Not sure but I think he's recently been to Wales.
Scotland I heard
It's a strange car the GR Yaris, it doesn't trigger much want aesthetically but i'd like to try one. I bet it's a blast.
Brilliant car, great review 👍👍
Great review on the GR. Can you share with us what roads you test your cars on please ?
At it again ☕️✌🏾✌🏻👊🏻👍🏻
Not ready for track?!? Maybe swap back to the OEM suspension setup
What about the differentials? Do you consider torsen to lsd?
There is a mod you can do to raise the rear view mirror.
Very nice!!
Harry's Garage did a fix for the rearview mirror on he's GR, he filed down the back of the arm near the ball joint. This allowed him to pull the arm up so its more horizontal rather than at an angle. It gave him about an extra 2cm clearence from the navigation screen. ua-cam.com/video/kHPtRwwLVhQ/v-deo.html @6:30. Great work mate, keep up the good work.
Any chance you'll be taking a look at the Hyundai I20N?
You need to drive more JDM cars ESP a type R to experience the manual involving drive of a gear shift
Random question mate, whats the brand and model number of your glasses ?
Great video another one of those cooks cars that won’t make it to North America unfortunately
Looks like you are really bouncing around in your seat.
Is the suspension too firm?
Maybe Litchfield has the answer with its two-way nitron dampers.
I owned a 2016 Ford Focus RS and the suspension was so harsh it beat the crap out of me every time I drove it and I had to sell it after only eight months of ownership.
No the road is just terrible.
3000 mile service? Extra virgin Castrol oil maybe?
How many mpg's combined do you get?
Honestly never figured it out, not something that I've ever considered!
How did you make that rally “turbo valve” sound on the car when youre taking the curves ?
Eventuri Intake
Looking at a GR Yais myself, these vids are very helpful! One question, I'm assuming these mods void the warranty from Toyota right? How big a risk is that?
For a Toyota that has been over engineered, I’d say the risk is very low compared to everything else on the market. I sold my 1993 Levin last week which has given me 15 years of bulletproof driving and it was always driven hard. The GRY is my new daily driver and I drive it hard and have already voided many warranty aspects but my faith in Toyota is strong. At the end of the day, it’s a $50k car in Australia, I’m willing to void its warranty for the added fun. If it was a $180k car, I would think twice before voiding warranties.
@@dejan. depends how much $$$ you got haha. My fear would be modding it, then something catastrophic happening to the engine and being stuck with a huge bill. But only live once right...
Our advice always is if you’re at all worried about warranty, don’t modify it! We can’t say what Toyota will/won’t be okay with. They’re great out of the box, but with a few tweaks it really comes alive.
I don't see any point in voiding the warranty for a few ponies. But I could barely afford the car, so.
Has there been any comparison with the Audi S1?
We haven’t driven one no
Any reliability concerns wit the 3 cylinder?
None that we’ve seen so far
Evolve automotive how much would a package like this cost ?
Drop us an email on sales@evolveautomotive.com and my colleague can quote you. The JB4/MSS is still in development but can give you a rough estimate.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Seriously can’t believe they don’t sell circuit + convenience packs together. Absurd. Just like not selling the GR Corolla here. Dunno what they’re thinking
What watch are you wearing?
Omega Seamaster Bullhead
@@EvolveAutomotive thanks mate. Very nice!
🇧🇷🇧🇷👏🏻👏🏻, Wow, basically with all the modifications, I would say now that it has. The equivalent of the power of a BMW 320i f30 on a stage 2 remap…
Sounds gd 👍
Doesn't think its built for track? haha come on mate, wake up
I am awake
@@EvolveAutomotive ua-cam.com/video/AfCXcroBaPE/v-deo.html Can you explain what you mean by "I dont know how I feel about tracking it; I don't quite think its built for that" ?
I go on to say it's perfect for B road blasting. So what I mean is that the car is more at home on a good stretch of road than at a circuit. Can you take it on track? Sure, and with a few modifications they're proving to be a very effective track car, but for me personally, it's a car made to attack a bumpy back road in any condition.
@@EvolveAutomotive This car has set track records on the ACTUAL
Nürburgrin in stock config and you still beleive its only made for bumpy back roads? like realllly mate?
@@Romeogolfbravoyt If you were willing to have an adult conversation about this I would continue, but you clearly aren't. People are allowed to have differing opinions.
This is long term?😂
It's the longest term you're gonna get considering we got the car on launch day
Evolve Automotive you’re right. I was expecting new-4year but obviously that’s not a developing/business perspective!
First 😁
