Thank you… I was hoping I would catch your update before I went to bed…. It’s very interesting to know what all these maps are about. I think I read it today in the guardian that they are digging large trenches around the power plant… I know that have had a lot of gravel delivered.
Pronunciation tips: Kleifarvatn: * You said: kleef-ar-vatt-en * Actual: CLAYV-ar-VATT-' (the trailing n is devoiced, just exhalation through the nose). "ei" is pronounced "ay". Note that *in this context* , the 'f' is pronounced like a 'v' - even though it's normally pronounced as 'f' (like, for example, "fjall", "fell", "fjörður", etc). Sorry, fs are one of those letters that doesn't just have one single pronunciation. Another pronounciation you'll find is "fl" (like in "Keflavík"), where it's pronounced like 'pl' or 'bl'. And it can also be a 'w' sound, like "lofa" ("LOW-ah"). And like 'm', as in "nefnd". Ugh! Well, at least we're nowhere near as bad as English! And there are rules, it's just that, for 'f', there's quite a few of them. Krýsuvík: * You said: cree-shoe-veek. Good job doing the r with an alveolar tap. :) * Actual: CREE-sue-VEEK. Remember the stress rule: double-length on the first syllable, and the first syllables of each part of compounds words. What they're translating as "sinkhole" is "sigdalur". It literally means "subsidence valley", and would be more accurately translated as "graben".
Calm down dude. I was just there. Nothing is happening, lige goes on. The ones in the town for sure have ensurance. I live in Denmark and the nordics are the richest countries in the world. Nobody needs to feel sorry about us
An Icelander here. Thanks for your fantastic updates. Very informative and I especially admire your calm and sensitive approach to the situation. We appreciate that a lot in these grim circumstances.
This is why Scientists rock! Thank you for all you are doing to help us understand what is happening. I'm wishing the Islanders and visitors best of luck through this challenging time!
Hi Shawn, Thanks for the updates. At 19:30 you talk about the steam. Most Icelanxic vilages and cities that are anywhere near the major faultlines in Iceland have geothermal power and hot water fed to their houses so not South-West and Westfjords areas. For instance Reykjavik has hot water running in the asphalt of the major shopping street to keep it ice- and snow-free in winter. Both drinking water (from tap) and hot water is very cheap. Households use it for heating and showering and this water has a nice rotten-egg (sulfur) smell to it. The broken hot water piping is probably causing the steam in the footage. Grindavik only has about population 3700 but this is 1% of the total Icelandic population...
Prof, thank you for continuing these updates. With you actually taking the time to confirm or note a margin of error, we are getting more factual info and more easily understand what is occurring there.
Our natural snowfall in Donner and Serria Nevada Mt.Rose,Nv. dried up, suddenly. And ISA went away. Absolutey no H2O in November. I wonder if it is coming late?
I like our explanation of the events happing. As an 88 year old engineer it is a breath of fresh air to have a logical enterapation of the data. I would definitely take a class from you.
Thanks for the fantastic commentary and data analysis. I have my 13 year old daughter watching, she loves Geology, your time and patience to produce these videos is appreciated
@LauriShalom I can see my daughter choosing the geology path to become the next scientist in the family. Having sources through events such as this really sparks young people's interest and imagination.
@shawnwillsey 😅 she speaks English, Russian, Latin and Spanish. Her favourite book is Othello, she prefers books to mobile phones and PC's, collects vinyl, sees social media as pointless, and prefers rare earth rocks to diamonds...she a great kid, if a little different to most her age.
Retired Geologist here, Really liked your explanation of the 'beach ball or volley ball' diagram associated with seismic events. Following your updates with keen interest.
I just returned from a ring road tour in late September. Thank you so much for all the in-depth information professor. I also teach college but a very different subject matter. I greatly appreciate your calm and compassionate explanations. Keep the great videos coming. Peace and well wishes to everyone in Iceland.
Thank you for explaining everything so clearly. Thinking of all people of Iceland who must be feeling anxious during this time. Thoughts from Australia.
So Sorry for the folks who have had to leave their homes. That has to be stressful. They are waiting not knowing if their home will be there when this is over. Scary!
Thank you for the clear explanation. i am also a geologist and work at the Volcanic Risk Service of the Italian Civil Protection Department. It is good to see an explanation that anyone can understand.
The best channel I have found on the situation in Iceland. Comprehensive, well-founded and factual reporting, presented very fluently and convincingly and easy to understand if you come from another language area. I live in Bavaria. Thank you very much! I'll stay tuned. Geli
Terrific update. As much as I would love to see your previous videos, I do tend to think it will cause confusion and get mixed up with the current event. Watching your updates from Christchurch New Zealand. Here through our quakes. Heart goes out to the locals of Grindavik and Iceland. Very stressful to have your home disrupted.
As I went to Iceland for holidays not even three months ago with a nice stay in Grindavík, there's no evening without your update these days. Thank you and best regards from Dresden, Germany
Thank you so much Shawn for the update. You have a brilliant way of explaining things so that we can all understand what is actually happening. Watching from Darwin, Australia. Sending best wishes to all those affected by these events. People all over the world are thinking of you and hoping like crazy for a good outcome. ❤️
Thank you and prayers for all of Grindavik and the whole of Iceland. You have been my favorite site for updates. I live in Maine and thousands of miles from them. But, they are still neighbors and need our blessings and prayers.❣️🦋❣️🙏🙏🙏😢
Although I would love to see your 2022 footage, it makes sense to wait until after this is over before posting as I share your concerns that the images could be taken out of context and widely spread and only add to the hype. I really appreciate this content and your teaching method and style. Greetings from the ancient volcano system in the South China Sea that was the last British colony. Thank you for sharing your time and expertise in this very grounded manner. It's what is needed more than ever in our overhyped hperanxious world right now. All the best to our friends in Iceland.
I appreciate your calm, rational coverage of this. My son is in Reykjavik, going to grad school, so it's easy to be fretful. Your informative videos help a lot.
Great update, spent two yrs at Keflavik NAS (I was USAF 89-91). Your friends Olympic pool fill rate helps grasp the magnitude of this. Again, thanks for doing these updates.
Keeping you in our thoughts and prayers, Iceland! We visited you in July and were in the Blue Lagoon when Litl Hrutur (sp) went off July 10th. I wish this eruption would be as tame as that tourist one!
Thanks! Learning so much about geography in this specific environment is fabu! Thank you for the BeachBall lesson today. Very interesting. Am interested in a live stream with your narrative.
We island folks have to stick together! Thank goodness there was time for evacuation and animal rescues! Fingers crossed the damage is not too severe..all the best from Newfoundland ❤!
Thank you Shawn for your factual, non-sensational and sensitive manner of reporting. Sending prayers and positive thoughts for our Icelandic friends that all continue to remain safe in the days ahead. Sending love from 🇨🇦.
Latest update at 19 local time. Icelandic experts are now expecting the most likely location to be North of HAGAFELL based on earthquakes today. This is on the North East part of the magma intrusion dyke. The focus now is to create defensive wall around the powerplant - first part of it closing the way for lava straigh west from the old fissure in Sundhnúkagígar. Gases are still mesured in the area and most in the area north of Grindavík.
My husband and I are in Iceland right now, arriving on Sunday morning. I have been looking for good info about this event and checking Icelandic news. Your info has been wonderful for us. We have spoken to many Icelanders and they are so much calmer than the news reports. They are amazing people!
I don't think it "happens all the time" that magma is flowing 1/2 km under a town of 4,000 people though. With cracks through the town and 1.2 meter uplift/subsidance.
I am a retired geologist and I appreciate your clear and concise reports. Having visited Grindavik this makes my heart hurt. It was a wonderful town with amazing villagers. I am glad they were evacuated. You can replace things, but not people.
Live stream is a nice idea. Maybe later in the week, like the 16th you suggested, so that people have more notice-time about it (especially considering your European audience on this topic in particular... where it's already the 15th). Regarding the re-uploading of older videos, to avoid confusion, it might be nice to wait until after the eruption occurs. In this way, it could maybe also be some nice 'extended' content after the news of the topic inevitably dies down after the eruption stops. Just thinking of myself, for example, I'd be really interested in seeing the videos, but I wouldn't mind waiting until after this eruption has finished, especially if it helps minimize the potential for confusion.
Shawn, I just rewatched a video you made a year ago where you had exceptional photography and description of the feeder dikes. The lava they erupted is, I think, the ground that Grindavik was constructed upon. Now would be an excellent time to replay that video with new, current event interpretations. When you see the slabs that the pressurized magma fractured, you are visualizing the origin of some of the earthquakes.
Big thanks for the update & explanations. Yes, I'd tune in to a livestream if I'm available. Would also like to see reposts of old videos if you can figure out a way to avoid confusion. ❤ and concern to all of you in Iceland, especially Grindavikurs.
Thanks for all of this great info! We're flying into Keflavik on Sunday, and you have helped put my and wife's mind at ease. I feel for those in Grindavik, and hope that after this they land on their feet.
The whole community has been coming together to help them. Everyone should also have been given housing of some kind at this point since the help centers where they where sleeping have been closed. We are all trying to find a way to help in different ways from donations to financial, like the fact that those that lost their jobs after the evacuation will get unemployment benefits starting the first work day after the evacuation (Monday then), payback on loans have been halted, insurance reports are not needed until this is over and it's save for people to go and assess the damage, long term rental cars are being loaned out for free while supply last's. So what ever happens we will support our country folk and make sure that they are able to go back to living normal lives.
As a person with limited geology knowledge I think posting videos of past eruptions would end up being confusing. If there is a eruption that would probably be more of a teachable moment to do that type of video. Thank you so very much for your videos. You have the rare ability to get complex ideas across in and understandable way! Prayers for Iceland
Thanks for taking the time to make these updates. They are now being referenced in the Live from Iceland livestream as a brilliant source of information. Suggest just posting links to your old footage. Also if you do a livestream, Nick Zentner is livestreaming Thurs 1200 and Sun 0900 Pacific time,. (not on volcanoes). Best wwishes to the Icelanders, especially thecresidents of Grindavik
Great video. We have been following the events every day since things started. We have Icelandic friends in Reykjavik, and they have have relatives from Grindavik now staying with them. Please do NOT post old footage. Several other channels do this, and it becomes click bait. Better to focus on what is happening now in November 2023 with your great analyses. Thank you, Shawn!
Our thoughts are with you Iceland. Had the great fortunate of visiting your beautiful country about 5 yrs ago. Wonderful people and had a blast at the Blue Lagoon!! I sincerely hope people and property/infrastructure remain safe and unscathed. 🙏
A suggestion to help your viewers understand the the risks posed by the coming eruption better. Please report on the prevailing winds in this area. An eruption is really dangerous to those down wind, upwind much less so . Likewise lava flows downslope. If you would present a topographic map of the area as part of your description that would help a lot. Otherwise, you're doing a wonderful job thanks from here in the Tropical Tip of Texas.
I found a video that shows an Ariel picture of Grindavik from 1957, It clearly shows a large crack exactly where the intersection is tearing apart. Good job as always. Rock on i
We are travelling to reykjavík on Friday your videos have helped calm my fears. Media hype wasn't good information. Your videos are so informative thank you. Thinking of everyone affected by this.
Love the Northern Arizona University T-Shirt! Am an Arizona native and have spent a lot of time over the decades exploring the San Francisco Volcanic Field in Flagstaff/Coconino County, AZ and learning about the geology of Arizona. Thanks for your work on these updates!
Thank you! I was watching Dutchsinse and he told us about you & suggested we watch you for volcano info. Dutch will always tell us, when he's talking about earthquakes that are happening around volcanoes, that he is not saying they are going to errupt, but that it really indicates that magma is moving. So I'm glad for all the info you are telling us. Thank you!
Hey Shawn Thanks for your generosity in sharing your knowledge on what’s happening in Iceland You rock!! I feel for the people of Iceland…my hope is that the community will be safe, during these uncertain times. James from Wentworth Falls
I've been fascinated watching the Iceland activity, I'm concerned for the people of Grindavik I'm glad they are safe but what a scary situation it must be for them not knowing if they will have a home to return to!. I LOVE your updates, I never imagined this subject would be so interesting but you make it so! I'd love to see the 2022 footage perhaps just highlighting *2022 Iceland archive footage* will save any confusion, and a live stream is a great idea. Thank you Shawn for sharing your knowledge with the world, and best wishes Iceland from Wales in the UK

I found a video that shows an Ariel picture of Grindavik from 1957, It clearly shows a large crack exactly where the intersection is tearing apart. Good job as always.
Rock on

We are travelling to reykjavík on Friday your videos have helped calm my fears. Media hype wasn't good information. Your videos are so informative thank you. Thinking of everyone affected by this.
As a visual learner that Olympic swimming pool analogy was perfect.
Thanks for doing this reliable and informative coverage!!
Prayers are with you all in Iceland 🙏
Thanks for your efforts and honesty brother, no nonsense reporting 👍
Stay strong 💪 Iceland and the folk of Grindavik. Love Iceland and the Icelandic people. Thinking of you from the UK 💜
Love the Northern Arizona University T-Shirt! Am an Arizona native and have spent a lot of time over the decades exploring the San Francisco Volcanic Field in Flagstaff/Coconino County, AZ and learning about the geology of Arizona. Thanks for your work on these updates!
To all the residents of Iceland we are watching and praying for you🙏
Thank you!
Thanks for all your updates. Just straight news 👍

Our thoughts are with the people of Iceland. 🙏
Thank you Shawn, you are doing a great job and service.
