10:41 A couple of fun facts:
Meng Er Zhang, the actress who plays Xia Ling actually has NEVER done any martial arts before prior to this movie. She had no idea she was auditioning to be Shang Chi's sister. But after training for 6 months, many masters actually saw her performance while filming and were convinced that she had been an expert for years.
Also, before she filmed this movie, she was single... but when the movie wrapped, she was married after meeting her husband on the production crew. The cast took them out to celebrate by... you guessed it, Karaoke. ;)

Fun martial arts fact: The actor who trains Katy in the bow & arrow is Yuen Wah, famous Hong Kong stuntman, who even worked with and doubled Bruce Lee, doing flips for him after he severely injured his back in 1971.
Speaking of which, the character of Shang-Chi was actually created during the popularity of martial arts in the west that was started by Bruce Lee. 🐲

Fun tidbit about this movie: on Twitter Simu Liu posted what he called the “Simu Cut” of the fight scene with Xailing. It’s an edited version of the fight where every time Xailing throws a punch or kick it cuts to where she kicks him in the nuts. It is so funny
Wong doing karaoke with them was so funny and unexpected

9:54 Fun Fact Magy: IT wasn't in the reaction video but remember the part where Ronny Chieng's character says, "Nice one Helen!"
That fighter that was taking on a soldier who seemed to be glowing red was actually two easter eggs from previous marvel films. The glowing red guy was an Extremis soldier, one of the minor villains from Iron Man 3.
The girl that's fighting him, named Helen, is also a Black Widow that was freed from the Red Room thanks to Natasha and Yelena. Look carefully at her belt and outfit and you can see that she's wearing the Red Room emblem of the Widows. Even better icing on the cake, if you go back and watch the Black Widow movie, you can see in the scene when all the widows are about to fight Nat, you can see the same character/actress for Helen standing among the crowd. They brought her over and credited her as the same character in both films as continuity.

When it says the Ten Rings will return.... at the end. It's talking about Shang Chi and his sister, because technically there's two different Ten Rings now. Shang Chi has his, and his sister has hers. I thought it was clever instead of just saying Shang Chi, who definitely will be returning if the Ten Rings are.

The dragon is the best surprise not a surprise in the MCU. The first scene, "we have a dragon". Add a bunch of dragon imagery. They arrive in Ta Lo and "here's a statue of the dragon that helps us fight monsters also we have dragon scales everywhere".
And yet almost everyone I know was surprised by the dragon! I think it's because the story does such a great job focusing on the human parts of the story, the the family conflicts and the nature of identity. You expect this very personal conflict between Shang Chi and Wenwu to complete the third act. Instead the climax is about our heroes growing, Shang Chi becoming more than what his father wanted, Katy not running from responsibility, Xialing starting to come to grips with her relationship with her brother. And even if that's what you're expecting you don't immediately assume a dragon will be a part of that. Best use of a dragon and genuine surprise even after all the build up.

Fun Fact: for those who may be unaware, Emile - who is the creature fighting Wong - is the same creature Hulk fights in his solo movie. Here they modified his look to be more comic accurate. I assumed however he would be much larger; or is Wong bigger than he looks?? Either way it's a fun little call back.

16:13 I love the subtle details about their relationship.
What he's carrying here is basically a picnic basket. As he waves to Yiling, you can see her slightly turn her head. As if to say, "Great... he's back again... how persistent."
16:22 She begins teaching him her style of martial arts. Actually, Wenwu is narrating in this scene, so the dialogue is hard to hear in the flashback. But as a Chinese speaker, Yiling has Wenwu in a horse stance. But she's actually pranking him too. He gets into the stance and asks her, "Like this? Am I doing it right?" She answers with a playful smile, while holding in her laughter, "Yes, absolutely!" She also reassures him that he's doing find when he turns his head to look at her and simply responds, "Eyes front! Focus!"

Magy, my beautiful swan, I am glad that you watched it.
One word to describe Shang-Chi? *Magical.*
I cannot believe I waited this long to finally see what everyone was talking about. I'm absolutely kicking myself for not having watched it earlier. I'm also upset at myself that things were spoiled for me without having seeing it.
Now, after finally watching it, I am freaking in love with this movie and its mythology. Also, love the mystery and cosmology surrounding the Ten Rings (and other mystical weapons coming later on). Also loved how tragic it was.
Wenwu/The Mandarin is one of the most compelling MCU villains I have ever seen. So heartbreaking, so menacing and so formidable.
Shang-Chi himself? I automatically welcome him as a future Avenger. Also, the possible return of the Ten Rings organization, now under the management of Shang-Chi's sister, is quite intriguing.
Also, now that I have seen it, I can now see why Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton is directing Avengers: The Kang Dynasty (aka Avengers 5). I now have the utmost faith in him delivering another fantastic MCU movie.
I not only cannot wait to see this again, but I cannot wait to see an eventual sequel.
God, this movie is so amazing!

25:14 Fun fact: All the way at the beginning of the movie, Yi Ling fights Wenwu with a combination of Ba Gua Zhang and Tai Chi. If you want another example to provide a bit of context... Ba Gua Zhang is like airbending from Avatar: The Last Airbender. Not just like it, but that martial arts was the inspiration for airbending and Tai Chi was the inspiration for Water Bending.
Wenwu fights with Hung Gar kung fu. This style is the inspiration for Earth Bending.
Shang Chi and his sister Xia Ling both fight with a mix of all of these styles and added Northern Shaolin Kung Fu which is the inspiration for Fire Bending.
25:39 Moments like this scene is why a lot of people want this crew and production to also work/assist with future live action Avatar: The Last Airbender film projects. The special effects and filming from Shang Chi were just really beautiful.

Heeey ! So glad you're finally reacting on this one !
Being from Taiwan, this movie became an instant favorite of mine when it came out in September last year (so much so that I went to watch it 5 times in theaters - twice in Imax 3D, and trust me, it was a glorious sensorial experience - each time bringing in new friends or family to discover it, and all of them loved it), not only is it a fantastic movie, it's also the first Asian lead MCU superhero movie, and was definitely a massive step up for Asian representation in mainstream cinema as a whole.
It's a movie that has a lot of layers to uncover, and even after watching it 5 times, each time I discovered new things that I haven't noticed before, making it a fascinating comment on different Asian communities at various stage of their lives :
    - Gen 1 immigrant like Shang Chi, who's still struggling to find his own path in a whole new world, which may be why he loves this song from Aladdin in the Karaoke, or
    - Gen 2 (if not 3) like Katy, happily American and who dropped all her Asianness... until she is confronted with true roots chinese wisdom in the old woman at the end...
    - Chinese people who stayed home and represents China, like Xialing, the one who could never get away, so she settled for Macau, which is the next best thing, while still being part of China.
    - And more importantly, the duality between autocratic militaristic modern China in Wen Wu (loner, authoritarian, doesn't leave room for argument, does whatever he pleases, is 1000 years old and set in his old ways (he said himself that he can't change) and conquers everything he sets his eyes upon) and the historical, traditional and naturalistic, martial arts and family-values based China in the Tao Lo villagers, and how both these places are basically Yin and Yang, Wen Wu's compound being always shot in black and white with only one colored spot in it, the wooden dragon (that potentially was carved with Tao Lo magic), very much like the Yin, and Tao Lo being the Yang of the equation by being brightlit and full of colours, with one dark spot in there : the portal that keeps the Dweller in Darkness.
And when Wen Wu and his troops arrive, he brings corruption to the whole village and all its colored surrounding become muted gray.
The more I saw this movie and the more I understood the reason of its massive appeal to the audience : It's basically this generation's Star Wars !
If you think about it, all the alignments are there : The main character is a dude working a modest job but with a heavy family history whose mother died when he was a kid, he's got great potential, and sets up to destroy his evil father's empire with the help of his badass sister and a quippy friend alongside, learns how to tap into the Force ...sorry, his ancestral Tao Lo Tai Chi... and finally overcomes his father by sparing him while he could very much have the power to kill him, and turns out his father wasn't such a bad guy after all, and finds redemption dying by saving his son. Does it sound familiar ?
Ultimately, if you strip Star Wars from all the Western, Space Opera, Samurai Buddhist zen space wizard fluff, Star Wars worked so greatly because at its core, it is a family drama.
Shang Chi does the exact same thing, just replacing all the previously mentioned spices with Kungfu, Wuxia, and chinese mythology, with a sprinkle of Asian representation in the West (Wong telling Shang and Katy how their lives are going to change forever and there is no going back is basically Benedict Wong as the first Asian of the MCU telling in real life to his little fellow Asian juniors Simu Liu and Awkwafina "Welcome to the MCU, guys, from here on, your lives are gonna change forever, and there's no going back ^^... and then they all proceed to celebrate in the most Asian way possible : A karaoke party ! Bring on the Asian in the MCU, guys !). And it's brilliantly done !
It's also a love letter to Hong Kong cinema, with so many legends from HK cinema from different generations coming together in one single movie :
    - Yuen Wah, the old dude that you might recognize from Kung Fu Hustle as the Landlord (and he did countless other movies tracing back to Bruce Lee's career),
    - Tony Leung, a living legend in all of Asia for being basically the Tom Cruise of HK (if you liked him in Shang Chi, wait until you've seen some of his earlier films like his works with legendary director John Woo, with Bullet in the Head, or Hard Boiled, or with other legendary directors like Zhang Yimou (Hero), or Wong Kar Wai (Chungking Express, In the Mood for Love, 2046, Grandmaster) or one of his best movie ever : Infernal Affairs,
    - Michelle Yeoh, the most badass woman of HK martial arts movies, who did countless movies both in HK with martial arts movies legends of the likes of Jackie Chan and Jet Li and in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
    - Brad Allen and Andy Cheng, 2 of Jackie Chan's stunt teams choreographers, both extremely talented and experienced at their craft,
    - And nowadays rising stars Awkwafina and Simu Liu
    - Also shout out to fellow youtuber Andy Le, who's playing the DeathDealer character, oh and also Simu Liu's personal martial arts coach for this movie, and who's running an awesome youtube channel called Martial Club, which is also paying hilarious hommage to all the Kungfu classic movies of old, by doing some of the sickest fight choreographies on youtube, and essentially the next generation of Kungfu filmmaking.
You can feel at its core that this is a movie where everybody who worked on it understood they were on a mission, and did it with love, passion, and most important, had lots of fun doing it !
And I absolutely adore it for that.
If you're curious, you can go and check some interviews with Simu Liu, he's one of the most adorable new stars of Hollywood, very humble and grounded person, and also with a hilarious sense of humor.
Oh, also, if you want do dive a bit deeper in the story, there are a few alternate deleted scenes that Marvel has dropped on UA-cam, and even if they're not exactly part of the story anymore, it's very interesting to see what they do with all the deeper characters moments (RazorFist is gonna become your new favorite character of the movie ^^).

27:35 When Wenwu returns and discovers that his wife had been killed, it shows a big camera shot of the aftermath of the courtyard.
There were at least 16-17 guys that came in to fight Yi Ling. When Wenwu returns, you can see about maybe 7-8 of them sprawled across the area. Without her powers, she took on and managed to beat at least half of them before she was killed.

Unlike in this movie, in the comics the Mandarin (Wenwu) and Shang Chi are not related. Basically Wenwu is a mix between Fu Manchu (Shang Chi's father) and Mandarin. also in the comics, the 10 rings are literally rings (the ones that go on the fingers) but Marvel changed the design and the abilities of the rings because the rings were similar to the infinity stones.

First, before I get to my time-stamped comments... Magy, your hair has gotten REALLY THICK! Looks amazing, sweetie.
1:31 - Correct, Magy! They were alluding to the ten magic rings worn by the comic book villain, The Mandarin. Each ring provided him with a different ability. The terrorist group The Ten Rings was also supposed to be in "Iron Man 2," but never made it into the film. These less than subtle hints were meant to lead up to "Iron Man 3," in which Tony's tech would come into conflict with the Mandarin's magic. Instead, we got... whatever "Iron Man 3" was supposed to be.
22:18 - "Oh, this is like a portal." I misheard that one, Magy. I thought you called it a porno, which made me wonder what the heck Marvel movie you were watching! 🤣
25:18 - Michelle Yeoh has studied dancing all her life, (started ballet at age four), so it was always just a few steps away from martial arts for her.
25:56 - If ever there was going to be an MCU villain you're empathize with, it was going to be Xu Wenwu, because it was his love that was being manipulated... you adorably petite mush. 😉
43:51 - OMG, you're right! I wonder if the rings originate with the Celestials!
Now gimme a heart! (Cuz it's been a long time and I've missed you. ♥)

I'm so happy to see that you understood the father's character better than mos people. A lot of western audiences aren't familiar enough with Asian cultural and just write the dad off as a bad father and a villain. Asian cultural normal isn't the same as western and Asian parents don't normally show affection for their children as openly as they do here in the west. The dad holding in his grief and not sharing it with his kids isn't as odd as it may seem. Grief is a strong emotion that drives people to do very extreme things. I'm glad you appreciated the father's character arc.

I think this is the most under-rated GREAT films of the MCU. It really is so good. The martial arts is really fun to watch, the story is very rich, it's very well paced, the humor is great. So if Marvel movies fall into Great, Good & Okay categories then this one is overlooked as one of the Great ones.

Magy, I know how romantic you are and really wanted that kiss. This was a movie about family, so yeah I'm glad they left the kiss for later. Let that have it's own movie to develop & make that kiss count. And it really was such a good story about family that you wouldn't want anything to distract from it. The mother was the best. The father had lost his way but you could understand why he had. The brother & sister relationship.....I feel like it's gonna be very Thor & Loki.
It'll be mostly civil with a few backstabs & then one day they start to come together. But not after she may use his willingness to let the world burn before he betrays his sister (again) against him. She's gonna put him through some shit in order for her to trust him again. Maybe even he gets caught up in some Celestial shit & she thinks he's dead for her to realize he had proven himself & she was being a fool for continuing to backstab him.

31:10 That kind of guilt and that kind of deflection of who should be the one to blame is quite common than you'd think.
I saw it in my own dad too which is why this movie is relatable for me. After my parents divorced and separated, my own father was NOT ok. At first he seemed fine. But over time, he let his own dark thoughts in his head cloud his judgement. He eventually got mad and during the heat of the moment, he was blaming me for why my mother left him. I still remember how he said directly to me that it was my fault.
It took a long time for everyone to forgive each other. But that building anger, the guilt, the regret, and all kinds of negative emotions can in fact be super harmful.
