In my early 20s I had a bad fall and ended up compressing L3, 4, and 5. Then came the sciatic pain. I was bedbound for 18 months with intense, unrelenting sciatic pain and could find no comfort in anything. One day I woke up and he pain was just gone, but the problem didn't end there. I've now been walking with foot drop in 18 years. All because of one fall.
I was playing around at work, rolled my ankle pretty good. It was swollen the rest of the day and days after. I never went to the doctor, figured it was a sprain like any other. Ten years later, I'm marching around everywhere so I don't trip lol. You're not alone. Like you said, one slip.
I will start these. But thus far can't make my heel strike first. But needed these. Thanks. Going on a year with foot drop after THR. Haven't lost hope, but need my other hip done now.
Best lesson to fix foot drop that I’ve found so far. Thank you so much. I’ve had it since 2015. It’s improved a bit, but I still can’t lift my foot but 15/20% angle
I am still in recovery from my stroke 16 months ago. I can walk 5 miles easy but still having problems with my joints so walk with a bad limp. The endurance is good but the muscles and tendons are still weak. These are good tips, I'm actually trying them right now
14 years ago I had a spinal cord injury resulting in a nerve being severed which of course resulted in foot drop. It took my consultant 18 months to do an MRI then inform me I should go home as there wasn't anything they could do for me. I had to work hard to relearn how to walk and run again.....although the run is more a hop skip and a jump. I learned to cycle and I joined the gym plus practiced stretching etc. I've probably got about 40% use of my foot which is far better than it was. I'll never wear high heels again and I certainly can't wear flats. I do find wearing a small heel (1.5 inch) helps my heel to hit the floor first. I wear a lot of trainers. Hard shoes are out for me. I find Skechers shoes are ok.....but I'm always on the lookout for more comfort with style.
@Gizzy Guap I've since been fitted with a leg brace but to be honest, it doesn't really help me. Lately I've been fitted with adapted shoe inserts. They help a lot. I went to see my podiatrist for those via my GP.
Wish I had have known this many years ago, I have foot drop from nerve damage. I am 69 years old, got this at 36 yrs (car accident), all I was given was a foot caliper. However my inner self made me start doing exercise as best as I could, still drops but nowhere near as bad as it was, never too late I will start these excercise's daily. Wish I didn't have arthritis of the knee, hinders things a bit.' I have two hip replacements your exercises have helped me enormously. Cheers

hello thank you for this great exercise video for foot drop. I was recently diagnosed with it. also have to weare a brace that is shaped to keep my foot from bending out of shape. I have added this exercise to my list so I can get better control . it it was due to a fall at home. last year. I still stumble and have foot drag. aand come close to falling. but the brace is a life saver.
I habitually crossed my legs for years. Then I noticed my foot making the flopping sound when I walked. And I could barely lift my right foot off the gas pedal while driving. I had noticed numbness in both my lower outside legs and then in front of my leg, crossing down to even my big toe. I thought I had nerve damage and it would get worse. Then a young neurologist asked me..."Do you CROSS YOUR LEGS?" I looked at him and said, yes I do all the time. He said this could be the cause. I stopped crossing my legs, which is still a temptation, and slowly began exercises to strengthen the muscles that lift my foot up & down. When you cross your legs it can put lots of pressure on a nerve that travels around the outside of the knee, around the front of the leg and down to your toes, think big toe area. It is one of the main ones that innervates the muscles that lift and rotate your foot. I then did exercises to strengthen these muscles. Been 5 years, full motion at 67. Thank goodness for that young doctor asking, "Do you cross your legs?"...
I got a patient with hip fracture on the affected stroke leg. The stroke was more that 10 years ago. Her gait pattern before the fracture was:no dorsiflexion at all, external rotation of the hip. My question is:can her dorsiflexion be recovered after so many years of inactivity? How to properly strenghten her glutes, considering she has lateral approach surgery and a very damaged already gait pattern?

Great suggestions for getting back to walking normally. I wish you would address people like me who have a "floppy foot" when I'm not wearing my brace. I am 3 mo. post surgery for sciatica pain and praying it will restore. Please help those of us who currently cannot lift foot up at all.
I feel for you, I broke my leg pretty badly a couple of weeks ago. The foot drop/possible nerve damage is honestly 10 times worse than any pain in my. Praying I won't need another surgery.
I slipped in wet grass and hyperextended my knee resulting in foot drop and 4 subsequent surgeries to repair and reconstruct, also one of the surgeries was due to infection. My left foot used to drag and hang to the side. I began having my partner give me deep tissue massages all up and down my leg and foot and ankle and because of the nerve damage it felt like hell.......but over time more feeling came back and I was able to tolerate the deep massaging and touch. I also began incorporating these exercises and also standing on my toe tips holding the wall and now I don't walk with a steppers gait, I walk normal. My foot doesn't hang over and I can almost dorsel flex my left foot up to the same flexion as my right within maybe a half inch, where I used to not be able to dorsel flex whatsoever. My orthopedic surgeon and neurologist were stunned by the progress and recovery of function.
@@touchyanose9464 Ouch! They are trying everything they can to not operate on me. Already had 2 surgeries for the bone. Am finally starting to get some movement back in my foot, but the numbness is still there, and halfway up my leg. It's been a fun few months.

Won't happen overnight but I swear by it. I was fitted for a custom orthotic brace from calf to ankle........I never bothered picking it up, but I don't advise that for others. I was determined I was not going to limp forever and I don't anymore

Hello and thank you for your informative & helpful videos. Please would you consider sharing ways to cope with lymphedema which seriously affects one’s mobility.
I have lost strength in my shin muscle to the point that the tendons on my upper foot which pull the toes up, are compensating to help lift the foot, and being over worked to the point of numbness and even pain. When I walk barefoot or in sandals my toes all visibly lift and the tendons tighten as I lift that foot. Back in October 2021, I had a lumbar puncture to determine if I had West Nile Virus. I did. Long story short, I was in excruciating pain for weeks afterwards. Extreme weakness in my right led. Months later, the weakness has subsided by about 40% in the leg. However, I am left with an atrophied calf muscle and a very weak foot and swollen ankle. Nothing in connection to West Nile would have done this. I did have meningitis and encephalitis as well. I can go up on my toes with my left foot but not my right. I can cross my toes on my left but no longer on my right. I have to lift my right leg each time I take a step. My pain management doctor believes the nerve was damaged during the lumbar puncture. Would you be inclined to agree with him?
Lumbar puncture is used for MS as well. I have MS but never had a puncture but I’ve read a lot about them being too invasive and many people reject them.
I had a laminectomy with fusion 33 yrs ago and the pain at least doubled, got my 1st pain pump 27 yrs and blew past morphine and straight to a very healthy dose of dilaudid where I remained till 9 mths ago when finally got neuro surgery and a cage along with foot drop in my left foot.i don’t think it’s more than about 50% but very exhausting to walk.both my shoulders are separated, both knee’s shot and my left hip is half way to Florida.I’ll be on strong pain meds the remainder of my life which cause severe adeama everywhere so you might imagine I’m running a bit thin on patience.its tiring just getting from here to there,is there something simple, shoe inserts or something that would do anything.i don’t have it left in me to be strong up a bunch of apparatus all the time,it’s hell just getting my shoes and socks on. Working hard on coming down on pain meds, talking with the dr about making the next big jump down to morphine with hopes of lessening the adeama,in theory anyway.thanks for what you do

The doctors have not been able to identify the cause of numbness and foot drop as there were 2 disk ruptures too but nothing major. Please suggest what could be the cause and how can i help myself get better faster.
Thank u sir .👍👌
Can one get an on line appointment ?
Nice shoes!
Do you mean gait training? Or is it called gate training?
Gait
@@BaphomentIsAwsome666 I was about to make that same comment but I've been chastised for correcting posters' spelling before on another site. I think it detracts from the good information people are sharing when they don't proofread before posting. I see this a lot on Facebook. Thank you for sharing the correct "gait".
@@FilmFlam I feel you on that, he spelled it right and wanted clarification on which word it was. It's hard online no vocal or body ques, so people tend to think your a asshole from the beginning.
Check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/9fXLmuLvcw8/v-deo.html, also lots of videos on Gait training on my channel :)

What about peroneal nerve damage
I had drop foot while I suffered from sciatica in my right leg
Malissa Hayden how did you fix it?? Please, I’ve had drop foot for 3 years and I have a limit for how long I can walk without taking a break... and that’s 19 minutes. I’ve told my doctor and and he wants to give me is medicine and doesn’t want to recommend me to a specialist.
stevenmartinez35 y my Chriopractor fixed it!! Best choice ever because the doctors wanted to perform surgery on my back!! So glad I went to see her
Malissa Hayden was it a chiropractor that the doctor recommended or was it a chiropractor that was like the joint? Because I’ve gone to a chiropractor from The Joint before and they didn’t do anything.. since it was like a 5 minute crack and it didn’t do anything. And thank you for replying 🤗
It’s a private practice. It took several months of adjustments.

Are these exercises safe for people with HNPP?
I get pain across my foot when I try the ankle pump.
Madonna had a therapist walk with me each session to help me if or when I fell. I only fell once or twice, but I’m still young

Bob getting out the gams in this video. Anyway, I really need to buy those foot stretching implements.
Working hard on coming down on pain meds, talking with the dr about making the next big jump down to morphine with hopes of lessening the adeama,in theory anyway.thanks for what you do
All these guys who don't have drop foot. Giving advice to me who actually do have drop foot. YOU CAN'T PUT YOUR HEEL DOWN FIRST. I try it all the time. I have drop foot. My heel WON'T go down first. I can't make it go down first. I now have a plastic brace that causes my heel to hit ground first.
