    This symphony contains some of the most beautiful melodies Strauss ever wrote. It may not be up there with some of his other work, but it is such a pleasure to listen to.

    Definitely not one of his best compositions but what a splendidly thrilling racket - especially at the end. As a former Horn player I can testify to the heroics demanded of all the brass in this and these ladies and gents acquitted themselves wonderfully. Bravo to you all !

    I was there. Incredible festival in 2000, all great orchestras were there: Philly(Sawallisch), CSO(Barenboim and Boulez), NYPh/Masur, SFS/MTT, BSO/Ozawa, Cleveland/Dohnanyi, RCO/Chailly, Berliner/Abbado, Wiener/Previn, LSO/Boulez ...costed me some ... WDR should release a bluray set with all the great concerts with all the great maestros from a unique era!

    A great work and a great interpretation. Really one of the best orchestration ever composed so, Richard Strauss was a brilliant orchestra mixer: maybe the best of all, wich is most to say, even so he would deserve that title.

      Yes. I think he is the best orchestrator of all times, I really don't have doubt on that. It's so clear.

    Man what a killer brass section especially at the end. I’ve never really caught onto Philadelphia until now but the blend and projection is Chicago level!

    Sawallisch became chief conductor of the orchestra at 70 and revitalised it, restoring it to being a first-rate ensemble. We hear that in the brilliant performance here. Regarded by many as not being Strauss' best work, the narrative Domestic Symphony is possibly among the most challenging for both orchestra and conductor to play, although there's little evidence of the latter here, as Sawallisch heads this marvellous performance with great aplomb - a recording to treasure, particularly by Strauss fans like me. (And Sawallisch first made quite an impression on my many, many rears ago.)

    • @jamesoliver6625

      Regarded by some as the best work in his oeuvre. I first encountered Domestica in 1970 on a vinyl of Mehta and the LA Phil from 1968 and have come to regard that performance as the most sublime ever recorded, when Mehta was young and trying to out schmaltz the Vienna Phil. I have probably 20 different performances in recordings and still regard that one as the finest. Sawallisch and the Philadelphia here are in a proud second to it. The only thing deficient, and it may be the sound engineer, is that the horn section was kept in the background. As a Domestic paean, Opapa Franz doesn't have his proper place underlying the piece. I have ofter thought that if I directed this live somewhere, I would turn my horns facing the other way with a mirror(s) along the wall to provide directing so their sound wouldn't be muffled against the backdrop, or use Wagner Tubas instead.

      The wonderful playing with the orchestra was already there left by Riccardo muti
      In fact the playing was more
      excellent under muti
      Then Wolfgang sawallisch

    Truly, a first rate sectond rate symphony.

    • @jamesoliver6625
      @jamesoliver6625 2 роки тому +1

      Second rate to what? Nothing any contemporaries of Richard's was as good with the possible...emphasize "possible" with a hard "P" exception of the Mahler 9th. You have to maintain contemporaneity because what came before is speaking a different language and what came after (Shostakovich, which to me has no parallel, the 4th & 8th in particular) has a totally different social context.

    • @robinblankenship9234
      @robinblankenship9234 2 роки тому +1

      @@jamesoliver6625 Totally tongue in cheek quip on my part. I was just using what Strauss himself had said in reply to being called a “sexond rate composer”. He supposedly said something along the lines of, “Well, I might be a second rate composer but I am a first rate second rate composer”. Strauss and Mahler were trying for different ends and used different means. Both were, IMHO, first rate.

    • @bryangl1
      @bryangl1 2 роки тому

      @@robinblankenship9234 I guessed it was 'tongue in cheek'; and I would add, the delightful style of quip made famous by Oscar Wilde. I guess one could also add that it's not a symphony anyway. Symphonic form and structure (is there a distinction? Yes, but not here) were reasonably explored in the 19th century, with a few slightly over that limit, with Mahler moving to such heights that anything later rarely lasted any distance.

    Vier letzte Lieder and Metamorphosen move me to tears, I love Salome, I was mesmerized by Ein Heldenleben and of course by Also sprach Zarathustra.
    But I find Sinfonia Domestica so boring and repetitive that I do not understand why it's still performed. No blame on the performance!

    • @chrischance9858
      @chrischance9858 9 місяців тому

      "Why it's still performed" = because other people feel the opposite of you. Metamorphosen is monochrome; Heldenleben is such a boring, aimless mess, but Domestica is pure joy, if you ask me. Which is why we're both happy- these pieces exist and get played :)

      I admittedly was a bit polemic in my original statement. I attended S.D. and the other pieces all performed by the same orchestra (Münchener Philharmoniker, they do know their(!) Strauss) and was disappointed by S.D. But surely it's always a matter of taste.
