  • Robert Jenrick and Kemi Badenoch will go head-to-head in the final heat of the Conservative Party leadership contest, after James Cleverly was knocked out in the latest round of voting.
Former home secretary Mr Cleverly was eliminated in Wednesday’s ballot of Tory MPs, following Tom Tugendhat who was knocked out on Tuesday.
Ms Badenoch won 42 votes and Mr Jenrick 41 votes, to Mr Cleverly’s 37 votes in the latest ballot, with 120 Tory MPs having taken part.
The final round of the contest will now see Conservative Party members across the UK vote to select the successor to Rishi Sunak.
The result will be announced on November 2.
Ms Badenoch and Mr Jenrick are both seen as candidates favoured by the right of the Conservative Party, while Mr Cleverly was thought of as a more centre-ground Tory.

Cleverly had the chance of giving the party a broader appeal, and this a path back to power. The risk is that both Jenrick and Badenoch will appeal to the base, maybe win back some Reform voters - but less likely to us back into number 10 in 5 years.

    • @ThePrinceOrtmayer

@@1985indeed What idiots don't understand is you have to compromise on things, it's not considered a "betrayal" to compromise on certain things. Ultimately Reform will never win unless they appeal to a wider base and Cons won't win unless they do the same. Labour have their left wing base but are able to attract people from both sides. That's why they won and will likely win again.

Jenrick should have never stood for leader.
1)Twice he broke the lockdown laws that HE agreed to.
    2) As Housing Minister he overruled the Westminster Planning Department to allow Richard Desmond - a rich CON Party donor - build multimillionaire £ flats with NO SOCIAL HOUSING ONES & bypass a law so Desmond did NOT pay £150 m in tax he should have paid to the Treasury.
    3) he tried to claim £3k pcm for a 3rd property in Newark which he rarely used.
He was sacked as Hsng Minister in 2021. NOT TO BE TRUSTED IMO.

IMO, the two best candidates are through. I hope Badenoch becomes leader, since she is the only one promising a thorough review of the Conservative Party; a party that has demonstrated over many years that it doesn't know what it's for. As a Reform supporter myself, Cleverly would have been the best candidate for our fortunes. Jenrick and Badenoch will offer more of a challenge, especially as they move to the right. One suspects that some form of understanding would have to emerge on the right for electoral success.

They had no choice but to move right. Reform decimated them and meant they had 121 seats instead of 230 seats as a minimum. So not moving right would have killed them off. To me it doesn’t matter what the policies are it’s the person selling it. Reagan springs to mind and certainly thatcher

I reckon this could be a betting coup. MPs with 5 years in opposition...they could have a few leaders before the next election. So do they really give a toss. Get together, have a chin-wag and equally vote for the two that are similar in views. Sounds like a nice little tickle to me. They could even get to have another bash at this next year.
