United Airlines hokey, homespun commercials in the early 80's were a huge contrast to their more sophisticated 'Rhapsody in Blue' commercials later in the decade
What a gorgeous commercial....this made me cry to be honest...don't know why though...I guess just a combo of me feeling somewhat deprressed and also what seemed simpler times ....and the line about the largest airline in the Free World just did it for me....loved it...thanks for posting and making me smile through my crazy tears!!!
this commercial brings back real fond memories for me,and i still love it as much as i did when i first saw it!!!God only knows we sure live in a different world now!Come on it would be nice to think there is a little Nancy in most of us,what a real sweetie. This will always be my favourite airline commercial,So here's to nancy and all the other hard working flight attenants out there!! ''we love you nancy''
To those interested, "Largest airline in the free world" wasn't propaganda, it was a disclaimer. At the time, Aeroflot was the largest airline in the world. With a fleet of over five thousand aircraft, and serving over three thousand destinations within the Soviet Union and around the world, I don't think there's ever been, or will ever be an airline in history that comes close to breaking those records.
@astrojet707 Yes, they did. I believe the date on this clip is incorrect. I would place it more in the mid-70s, when the DC-10 (as pictured at the end) was still the darling of United's fleet.
In this time of sarcastic, cynical (and even hateful) TV ads, this award-winning feelgood spot harkens to a day when striving for superior performance was, justifiably, "something to crow about". Voiceover by actor Harold Gould. The jingle (with custom lyrics) was based on the 1970 hit record "United We Stand" by the U.K. group "Brotherhood of Man, with Tony Burrows".
As a flight attendant myself, I can tell you that you will get what you give on the jet. There are definitely some in my profession who have stayed at the party wayyy too long & should've retired yrs ago. However, most of us still love our jobs & if you board with a friendly demeanor, we will bend over backwards to make it the best flight of your life. If you're nasty, we will simply avoid you like the plague for the duration of the flight. ===AirlineDevils
My sister was a flight attendant for American for about 10 years. I don’t how you did it. You all are the cream of the crop, a special kind of person who really deserves much more recognition! Thank You! ✈️
I love it ! united should run an add like this again to day and concetrate on a "friedly sky" image again ! god it would be great considering what a pain flying ca be today !
Late 70's fashions were still in, to a certain extent, in the early 80s. Just like you see a lot of overall fashion and style things now you saw 5 years ago. Same thing. :)
@Reggie1971 I agree 100% with you. The term "flight attendant" came about as a result of the Women's Liberation Movement of the early 1970's. Steward and Stewardess are gender-specific and in no way derogatory.
@Lobo8310 And Flight Attendants actually took pride in their job and were nice to the customers. You never see that now a days. The US based airline flight attendants are rude and mean.
Nancy must remember this day by day, sad that air travel isn’t as good as it was 20+ years ago. I really appreciate the slogan “fly the friendly skies”
wow, it's really sad there's nobody like that anymore:-) I took my first United flight last week and the flight attendants were snapping at passengers and didn't have that flare like Nancy. Bad impression for my first flight. I think they changed their slogan because they knew it wasn't true. "fly the friendly skies" right! "It's time to fly..." which translates into get on the plane NOW and shut up!
I remember it was the best coach seat in December because they gave me a full dinner with turkey for thanksgiving that night it was amazing not like today they treat you like trash it is horrible.
I'm flying United on the 18th. Never had any problems with them before except this time they won't have an escort for me to help me through the airport because I have Asperger's Syndrome and can't navigate the airport independently yet (plus, i get really nervous around huge crowds)
US based Flight Attendants could take a lesson from Nancy about Customer Service and as well from Asian carriers. Today flights attendants act like its a right to be a flight attendant, when it should be a privileged!
I wouldn't go as far as nationalizing the airlines. But how about partially subsidizing the major carriers so that they can at least be on level ground to compete with the regional and low cost carriers who are eating them alive.
@burbank That happens to have occurred on the other airlines too. Once you see how horrifying the services of LCC airlines today though, you'll be shocked. I'd rather have myself flying within Flight Simulator, which still provides aircraft that serves as the base for the "Friendly Skies".
@BettinaBalser Nah, early-mid 80s is about right for this, to be honest, the DC-10 was the pride and joy of the UAL fleet For a long time. Only after United bought Pan-Am's 747's and Trans-Pacific routes did that change to the 747
Those were the days - of great onboard service ^-^ Too bad that cutesy flight attendants are a thing of the past. Any wonder why foreign airlines get higher ratings for their onboard service?
That was a McDonnell Douglas DC-10. Fact: United Airlines did fly six L-1011s acquired from Pan American, but sold them after only flying them a short time.
@@TheLocoUnion Yes! I was fortunate to fly on both: L-1011: Trans World Airlines(TWA), Delta, Eastern DC-10: American, Mexicana, Aeromexico Guess I’m showing my age as all but three of these airlines are no longer flying, which is quite sad. 😆 😢
We need more people in the world like Nancy
Yes
Holds true through 2020
My GOD I miss those days of air travel! 😢
"Fly the friendly skies" 1965-1996 R.I.P.
Hello. Well, guess what? It has been seven years since United Airlines revived that advertising slogan.

I miss the good old days of air travel, when airlines competed on service. Now, it's sooo different. Come back Nancy, we miss ya!
i like the reference to the "free world"
This was a super bowl commercial in 1982...
Why was I expecting the Muppets to pop out and sing along with this commercial?
lol
I flew united today from FLL to ORD and the flight attendants were very nice!
April 1 2013
Lol classic. Thirty years later and I still remember this jingle.
I wish that anything was treated as if it were so special today!
@astrojet707 Yes, they did. I believe the date on this clip is incorrect. I would place it more in the mid-70s, when the DC-10 (as pictured at the end) was still the darling of United's fleet.
Wow. When passengers traveled on planes with common sense and manners!
"Your welcome very much?"... I still love it! I wish it were still the friendly skies.

Did you see how much space between each row they had?? They had more back then than first class has now it seems...
Sweet!! Lovely commercial
Nancy kicks ass.
Back when flying was a pleasure and not a hassle.

@scottbaino scarves were all the rage in the 1970s (for some reason!)
United Rocks!!!
You're right...and those well mannered customers who dressed properly, and behaved like adults on an airplane are just as nonexistant
Can you honestly imagine a stewardess today coming to your seat and carefully putting one cube of ice in your drink using tongs?
I love it.....The Largest Airline in the free World......
Very sweet. I miss that in TV ads.
anyone remember,"fly the friendly skies of unitas"? as in johnny unitas, the football player. yes that was actually a commercial, folks.

1982-Come Fly the Friendly Skies.

This commercial aired in May of 1982.

That music is the United We Stand song from 1970.
i like this commercial!
We desperately are in need of Nancy in today's world of flying
i like the "free world" part :)
The music of this commercial mix the McDonald's and you, and the spanish Puerto Rican slogan song from American Airlines "Todo es Especial"
I love united airlines
This is my absolute favorite commercial. I wonder if Nancy was a real United Airlines flight attendant...
At the beginning it says her name so that might prove she was or still is lol
actress is lane binkley and she has this video linked on her website
I graduated High School in '82. You officially have 18 more years before you are "old".
What would Nancy say about UA now?
ch1kusoo she would drag herself off the plane
ch1kusoo now this airline f****k up
She'd be horrified
She would Be sad to see this airlines legacy be destroyed.
Nancy is probably a union boss today.
thank you very much :D
wish airlines were still like that today.

Aeroflot (the largest airline in the non-free world) would never have someone like Nancy to serve you.
Hard to believe this was from the days before seratonin reuptake blockers.

Im a lovely and professional Flight Attedant
I fairness there are some out there who still do !
I've never flown the airline, because it appears more expensive than the other airlines I fly

I'm Proud to be Union. Union represented staff provide far better service levels than non-union.
If only United was still that way. Ohh well
