Husband was really strategic in handling the situation. He protected and basically demanded his wife to be respected, while at the same time schooling the lady. All this was done in love;AND he made sure to keep his professional reputation intact by contacting HR first! Yes yes yes! Self control, love, gentleness! I am happy you guys had a good end of this story and I will definitely take your advices.

I loved that Brian addressed the situation but contacted HR before he did it. Once you are protected then you let that person know that they are DEAD wrong in the most professional way possible. I do believe as Christians some of us do believe when confrontation arises we should walk away, but personally I believe that I can still be a follower of Christ and stand up for myself. I love y'all and how you guys don't stay silent and use your experiences to be a teaching lesson to others.

The way you guys handled the injustice with that co worker was FANTASTIC. Yes, it was your husband 's place to take the lead, I am an RN and usually the only person of color at any given period of time. I have dealt with behaviors like that my entire career and more times than I can count had to make a stand. As a result I am respected by my peers. Don't ever be afraid to be comfrontational during injustice, Being quiet does mean you agree, You guys are so young that I wish we could have given you a better world and did not have to deal with this sort of thing.

I love you guys! My boyfriend and I are a bi-racial couple. I am dark-skin , he is European. We experience racism , although I must admit , because we’ve been together for four years, I do not pay attention to it. I Almost forget it happens. However , when it happens to me based, particularly on my color , he always offends me. It hurts, but I am so use to it , (my whole life) that I kind of brush it off or become blind to it . But my boyfriend , gets upset and hurt, and he likes to speak up, and likes for me to speak up because he says , it can make a change. He tells me about Dr.Martin Luther King. How he made change passively , but he spoke up. I really admire you two, you guys are a powerful couple of the LORD. Very beautiful couple. And you are so gorgeous Alexis. Your smile is so pretty, your hair is vivacious. You both inspire me.
    We are believers as well.
    I love Jesus Christ

I agree with your boyfriend when things come up it's an indication you must address it because the issue will become stronger and stronger. Once you make a stand, and address it, it's like saying I matter period. It instills so much confidence that you stop it in it's tracks, and also the incidents become less. Also you pay it forward so that they will think before they try this with someone else.

Monaé Ministries For Jesus I can definitely understand where you’re coming from. We’ve experienced so much, it would be easy for us to just stop paying attention to it and let things slide. But I have to agree with your boyfriend - God has put you both in a unique position to affect change and be the catalyst for shifting a culture and horrible mentality. If you won’t do it, someone who directly experiences racism, then who will? Trust me, it is almost easier just to say nothing and keep it moving but we are not helping people by doing that. You have the ability to be used by God, IN LOVE, to enlighten and educate people and help them see this world how it should be seen.

I love that you approach HR before you broached any conversation with that woman. That was prudent as these days, companies will let you go at the merest hint that a situation could cause PR /legal problems. I'd like for you guys to do a video on what exactly one could say to the ignorant in such circumstances. Personally, I get overwhelmed with the lack of empathy and what I see as willful ignorance of some racist individuals. I don't even know where to start in their correction or enlightenment. As a result, I have been a poor champion for such issues and people leave just as dumb as they arrived.

In my own experience I’ve found that it is often easier for White individuals to hear what is truly being communicated (when discussing issues of overt/covert racism, micro-aggressions, etc) when it comes from a White ally. And I applaud the maturity demonstrated to not automatically “pop off” after a situation like that. Can’t say that I’m there yet 🤦🏾‍♀️🤣

"I have Black friends" 😡 but what does that have to do with me because I am not your friend. As adults we ALL understand the relationship you have with your "friends" black or otherwise is not to be confused with how you address or communicate with other people in general. So I get extremely annoyed with that weak excuse. Save it for your "friends" who apparently tolerate insensitivity and disrespect...best believe that's not me. That comment that " but I have black friends" drives me insane. That doesn't give you the right to be disrespectful and say the "N" word with "GA" or "ER" at the end of it to anyone of color in my presence. I will always tell people I don't care what you were taught, or what your other black friends let you get away with, you do not say or do certain things and think that it's cool. I absolutely agree with the way you handled the situation with your coworker. Granted she was probably drunk at the time but, as long as she learns from it and does better then you did your part. I can not remember where in the bible this scripture is, I just remember seeing it and the Holy Spirit propping me to say it whenever. I believe these word will stop you from battling principalities and will allow God to fight your battles. Remember always, "If God is for you who can be against you," saying His word will allow you both to rest in the comfort of the father in Jesus name. God bless you both you are in my prayers.

You guys are absolutely correct in your thinking, as usual. What the white lady did is one of the many maneuvers sociologist and author Robin Diangelo discuss in her book White Fragility of how whites handle being confronted with their racism. It's extraordinary the excuses they come up with to get out of that situation/conversation. If you haven't already done so you should look her up. I like her because she's a white person talking to and about other white people about the implicit biases they carry and how we're worse today. She definitely taught me how to identify and categorize white peoples level of ignorance. It too is extraordinary!

You do that if that's what you prefer.
The point they were making is to ensure it doesn't get turned on you when (most likely) she will report you to HR, that she had witnesses to you attacking her and, if she's really evil, she'll weep and tell them that she is scared of you. You could then get fired. She would then get time off work to recover from the distress and embarrassment that you caused her, possibly financial compensation. Brian handled it in the way that took that opportunity away from her by getting to HR first.

Colorism is not something that usually occurs in the black community..... In fact, the origin of colorism originated during race based slavery in the U.S....
During that era lighter skinned black & mixed folks were assigned to work in the house AKA 'house negros' while the darker skinned black folks were assigned to the fields & hard labor AKA 'field negros'....
The civil rights era brought about laws that made it illegal to discriminate based on race, COLOR, religion, creed, etc...
Now, discrimination wasn't made illegal based on (among other things) *color* (aka colorism) because this was something that usually occured in the black community 🤔...
Nope, colorism was included as a form of prejudice & discrimination.
Although, eventually, colorism *did* spill over into the black community's psyche.
Mainly becuz the subliminal message was very clear.... if your skin is lighter, not only are you 'better' than the darker folks..... *you're treated better too.*

YES WE HAVE TO ADDRESS RACISM ESPECIALLY AS CHRISTIANS. WE CANT IGNORE IT OR ACT LIKE IT DOESN'T EXIST.
WE NEED TO LOOK TO GOD FOR ANSWERS. TFS YOUR STORY

You and your husband made some very salient points of enlightenment regarding colorism and white America. I enjoyed your commentary.

I appreciate the follow up provided in this video. I am proud that your husband took the necessary steps to address the issue and to provide the much needed education to confront privilege and racist ideologies. The rest is up to the transgressor to change and grow from the experience. Time will tell, but she now has an opportunity be better, and be a part of the elevated transformation this world desperately needs.

Don't worry about rinkles in linen, it naturally rinkles! White linen is a favorite of mine, but the rinkles will always be there! I think you handled the confrontational conversation with that person just right!

Bahahahahahah....I love you guys and man I also love the show "Friends". I am a black woman and my friends don't get the jokes and really don't understand how I can laugh at Chandler/Joey/Ross all day.
Anyway, thank you for all you do. I am not in an inter ethnic relationship but I am open to it. Thankfully I live in Toronto, Canada where people pretty much mind their business and really don't give a crap about what you do as long as you like hockey. I applaud you both for taking the steps to have this discussion and will continue to follow your journey. God Bless! P.S. I started this comment after the "Friends" reference so I will continue to watch now. :)

I'm a 64 yr old black woman, I have faced this, all my life, especially, in my own race. Living in the south, you would think, the whites, would give you problems, about your color, no! in my case, it was, my race of people. They judge you, accordingly, by your color, and life style. Just trying to live, is hard.

The way you ultimately handled the situation was great. I wish more people would handle it that way. You must confront people's ignorance whenever you can. I have situations in my past by people who were not White but prejudiced against Dark Skin Black People and in retrospect I wish I had handled the situations differently. I know better now and would not let comments just go without challenging them.

Thanks for the video! Love how you handled the situation. I agree that conversations need to be had concerning racial issues/encounters. I also agree that white people talking to white people is usually more effective. Those conversations need to happen more. Also thank you for reminding us that Jesus was not afraid to have confrontations and conflicting discussions. Love is definitely not just suffering in silence and being passive.

Some very important concepts were addressed here. I believe that you both are very bravely dealing with this issue.
I believe that the Lord not only chose you to be husband and wife, but added the color aspect to help bring HEALING among all ethnicities (in all the MANY areas where racial wounding has occurred, and there are MANY areas of wounding), which will reveal His glory. Racism and ethnic conflict is rooted in Hell, and ultimately only the Cross destroyed the power of racism, but that victory MUST be walked out here and now through painful, shattering, but transforming confrontations. Only Christians truly CAN address this matter. Because of biblical truth, Christians CAN face the unique form of horrific racism in each of our hearts and the damage it has done to our souls! While racism will INCREASE in the non-Christian world, racial love and fellowship will EXPAND among true Christians. This is so amazing! Thank you for your courage and transparency! Glory to God!!!
    Keep walking in His truth!!!

I agree totally... truth will make these souls free. First of all love 💕 is an action not silence which is agreement ... and hypocrisy.. silence is necessary if we are angry 😤leading to sin...First Christ Jesus knew motive and intention always..We don’t always know but If someone steps on your toe and it hurt 😢 ouch is the word to describe and response not silent pain..God gives discernment and abilities to speak with love against ignorance hatred divisive behavior.
I love 💕 your thought 💭 process behind dealing with conflict... Going to HR is pivotal and then this woman 👩.with her racist behavior displayed to another person within the company..Your are a wise couple... blessings always
