Like incarcerating all of the drug users will ruin households, it will overload prisons, it will give more power to drug dealers and it will kill a lot more users because they would have to hide the usage and consequential ODs, and getting clean would be a bigger stigma than it is today because of prison sentences and public opinion etc

If anyone is wondering why decriminalization of drug use isn’t working in Canada and the US but it’s working flawlessly in parts of EU like Portugal it worked perfect; it’s because Portugal had tons of resources to help people get clean and lots of people working in programs.
There are extensive waitlists for the programs to help addicts get clean in the West. People lose hope and give up, stuck in addiction.

Well all the money that goes to the legal system/dealers/users/prison and whatever else would be a huge contribution to get more/better facilities for treatment. And with time you could build more of them while also reducing the amount of addicts, giving it a double stacking buff and bim bam bum we go hard.

    • @MrTuneslol

safe supply is also a key part of making decriminalization optimal too. Clean drugs that are pharmaceutical grade? Why the fuck would anyone buy from a sketchy dealer in that case. It's like the weed market in Canada, 10 years ago in my province they did a survey of street weed and a significant portion of it was laced with something else, usually prayed onto the buds. This problem has since dissapeared due to safe supply and distribution vie dispensaries. Shit just works.

They have money for war, but cannot feed the poor.

Let them deal with their own conflict. Then maybe just maybe we could start taking care of our streets. Till then I don’t ever see a end to this madness that will destroy us. The problem with increasing the punishments for certain crimes is that, once someone has committed a crime with such a harsh punishment, they may as well commit a bunch of other crimes - since the punishment of getting caught is already so extreme. It leads to an all-or-nothing mindset, may as well go big if you're already legally screwed.

These people are low key gone on the other hand there's no way jails can house the amount of criminals that would have to be put there if you raised the severity of the crime. And how would they even pay a fine when they already steal and sell the stolen items just to get food and drugs.

They either will or they won't be around to. Those UCLA players who got caught shoplifting in China before Trump bailed them out learned that the hard way. Also crime fell drastically in the 1990s alongside a massive spike in the incarceration rate following the 1994 crime bill so the precedent in the US already exists.

NGL in my opinion the reference to the rats drinking coke water he made (although random) has a good point to it. Drug use has a lot to do with the human condition BEYOND just the possibilities of mental illness. 5:50
Edit: I know rats and humans are different lol obviously, but the link is that to a large extent we are all social creatures of life, our priorities partially are surrounded by our general habits and ideologies. Animals have instinctive priorities and humans gain them through our own sentient choices. That in it of itself is the important link.

he´s pretty right about the drug use and the root issue of it. the most important reason people use though is because of lack of connection with others. but not having goals is very close to the root. like the having a goal part and wanting to work towards it is the easiest way out of drug use, since forming bonds isn´t as simple while trying to get sober. so yea, it´s a pretty good way to get that intrinsic motivation to actually become better again.

6:25 sounds weird but XQC is right here.
we've been going about combating drug use incredibly wrong.
we as humans need to bond with something, if we are healthy we will bond with positive things like family, work, hobby's like reading or anything you can name.
this need to bond is a MUST we just do it we don't have a choice in the matter.
we need something to bond and relate to as well as it needs to be something that gives us comfort.
the study of the rat cage experiment is fascinating.
in short they put a rat with heroin/cocaine laced water in a cage and also gave them access to normal water.
in almost all of the subjects they drank the drugged water till they died from it.
and so we assumed that there are ''chemical hooks'' in drugs that are what makes you addicted.
it was only half right as our bodies definitely become used to them and withdrawal is a very real thing.
see years later the Vietnam war happened and in those dense jungles a lot of soldiers American one's to used heroin/cocaine.
which makes sense, you are in a very stressed place with dangerous animals people and horrible traps...
you could die just from one infected cut in your foot I'm not kidding the jungle alone is hell...
but the weird thing was, when those American soldiers came back to the US.
NONE of them used ANY heroin anymore..
    it just vanished amongst them.
so science noticed.. and one guy went well it kinda makes sense.
if we look at the rat cage experiment.
the rat is in there all ALONE, it has NOTHING to do except drink the laced heroin.
so he devised a new study test and made ''Rat Park''
a heaven for Rats, with lots of toys, places to hide and sleep, other Rats to screw, and plenty of food to eat.
and again.. he made sure there was a heroin laced water bottle and a normal one.
what happened next amazed him, the Rats almost never drank the heroin laced water.
they never did so compulsively and they never overdosed/died from it.
it isn't ''Drugs'' that keep someone addicted.. its their ''cage''
their social environment, their place in society.
somewhere they bonded with heroin instead of society or hobby's or something positive.
something fundamental is off in their direct circle.
this could be ANYTHING, it isn't something you can just name and requires time and therapy.
but THAT is what keeps people addicted, not the drug itself..
this is why legalization is so needed.
if people want to try some weed or cocaine for once they should be allowed to.
this way it is secure and controlled so less risk on the drug taking part going bad.
no obstacle to getting professional help if needed for example.
and guess what? then people try it once, see what it is and go ''Well that was fun! but i can't be stoned everyday i have a life I'm very happy with, and i got things to do!''

You cant solve this problem by funding the problem. This is a multi-million dollar business in San Francisco, it is peoples jobs to "help" the homeless drug addicts, so if the problem disappears, that means their jobs get taken away. You cant solve homelessness by taxing people more and giving it to the poor, you can only solve it by taxing people less and letting them generate money on their own.

    • @jipgg
      @jipgg 6 місяців тому +8

Its a socio-economic dilemma. Both outcomes are undesirable. Reducing the sentencing seems to have caused a spike in the rates of these crimes, negatively impacting the local economy by great significance. Increasing the sentencing could make these crime less desirable and decrease the rate at which they are commited, yet still at a rate that the detainment facilities cannot sustain.
There's no obvious approach to solve both problems.

Hypercriminalizing drug use will never ever solve the problem. I don't understand how anyone could have this opinion, are people unaware of what happened during prohibition? Prohibition of any kind never ever works no matter what.
The problem with the approach of places like Portland is that they only did a tiny portion of the equation. You need safe supply, harm reduction and critically, you need fully funded recovery services to help people quit or reduce as much a possible. You need social services to help home these people, help get them decent jobs, help them develop social structures etc. This is the most important part of helping addictions. We need safe supply because fentanyl and other shit drugs are what's actually killing people.
Obviously shit still happens with any drugs, but with support, education, and safe supply we can almost entirely eliminate the deaths from drugs. We can almost entirely eliminate the dangerous underground market, there's no reason for criminal enterprises to waste resources trying to sell inferior and dangerous product when you can get it safely from a pharmacy, and the fact it's pharmaceutical grade means there's literally no motivation to buy it from anywhere else.
Anyone who's saying oxy is responsible for the opiate crisis is being disingenuous at best. Illicit fentanyl is THE problem. We have a fentanyl crisis. So many opiate naiive people do other drugs that are contaminated with fentanyl and die because of it, or it gets mixed into other drugs to make them seem "stronger" but they don't mix it well so you get hot spots of high concentrations of fentanyl so they overdose.
If the US invested a tiny fraction of the money they waste on the ae and drugs, they could have a fully functional support system, it could be the absolute best in the world and serve as a pillar for there's to the world to follow. There's too much money to be made in the war on drugs. It serves a political point so the politicians don't want it to end, they ensure it continues happening because they leverage it to gain votes. It also serves to justify the militarization of the police system.
Drug use is a very well understood topic. The problems aren't what they are because it's a hard problem to solve, it's super fucking easy. The US still has a drug problem because they want it, it serves numerous functions. It helps subjugate and institutionalize their less fortunate, you have to keep the prisons full, can't have your modern slave labour breaking down. You need to justify your police funding. You need to reinforce the "us vs. them" mentality that the political parties are fueled by. The list goes on and its pretty dammed obvious that it is the way it is intentionally. We know the solutions that work, we've seen it work. If you look at Portugal you can see a much more effective implamentation of a more holistic system, they still have problems and could do much better, but it's a hell of a lot better than what the US is doing. With the insane amounts of money the US spends, they could revolutionize treatment and support, the fact is that they choose to specifically not fix the problem.
The studies have been done, we can make a roadmap to almost entirely eliminate the issues overnight. Those in power actually making the decisions will actively oppose you if you try to work towards it though. The military industrial complex makes billions of dollars through the war on drugs, political parties maintain their hold on a state because they can fear monger their voters into opposing the opposition. The list goes on and on.
You will never, ever stop people from doing drugs. Even in countries where you can hey the death penalty for drugs, (not) _surprisingly_ people still do drugs, it's almost like it's extraordinarily powerful brain chemistry that's responsible for illogical or irrational behavior no matter what the potential ramifications or punishments are 😮
And yet after Portugal legalized all drugs and provided support structures, overdoses and even general drug use actually declined! holy shit the evidence is out there that this is the best way to do it. If you still think prohibition is the answer, you're being willfully ignorant because demonizing these people has been put forth as an integral part of your sociopolitical identity, and you've been hearing people say that drug use is incompatible with a functional society. Think for yourself and actually look at the evidence available. Tons of studies and real world examples. Anyone saying well look at San Fran or Oregon and CleARly iT dOEsnT WoRk has a fundamental misunderstanding of what's necessary and they're either intentionally trying to misconstrue what's happening or are ill-informed and simply parroting what they've heard others say. There is no other option, anyone with a semblance of logic and more that two braincells to rub together can see the overwhelming evidence which all leads to the same conclusions I've presented here. Rather than making everything super illegal again, why don't we actually at least _try_ to help these people, it wouldn't even take that much money or resources to develop the framework/structure for workable and effective support & recovery systems.
