We have several horses that lived to be 28. Of course that's too old to be racing or even riding sometimes!
Ridiculous he´s still going to race her at that age. He can ride her but in a relaxed way. If he loves that horse he wouldn´t do that anymore.

It's not your horse. From what I can see on the video she might as well be 10! I know of a 28 yr old Anglo Arab that's still jumping a meter twenty no problem because she didn't like being retired! As long as their happy then do it and I'm sure that boy will stop if he notices anything

Very feisty old woman she is!! Poor kid. hopefully he gets a good deal of education before she passes. I wouldn't do barrels with an old mare such as her. Maybe some trail rides here and there but personally I wouldn't ride a horse at that age often or at all. She needs a good retired life like every elder!
Bella if anything I think he should try to compete in trails rather than barrel racing. It’s easier on the older horses.

YES, he still intends to make that little old horse race, watch the entire video. 2:18 "I'm okay with Junebug's age, it don't bother me much because I know what she can do. The plan now for Junebug is to keep on training for this summer for barrell racing and take 'em to Fair".
Your kids will be doing the same thing to you when you get to retirement age. There's no money in social security for millenials.

You can still ride a horse 25 + years, but not extreme riding like barrel racing etc, more like trail or pleasure riding. I had a 36 year old didn't ride her but every few months, sadly she's passed now, but it didn't seem to bother her.
My horse is 22 and still loves to run barrels he is semi retired and in really great health
for me Dr. Jeff's videos are the best and he's my favorite vet

Saartje Hond Damn straight! We had a guy trying to sell us this gorgeous palimino warmblood he was a looker...he was also on pain killer and had a fracture in his hock! I was PISSED thankful the vet came with us!

@@chasing_dreams_and_barrels2361 She's a small pony that's 27 She's way to skinny see her ribs and how skinny her legs are she is lame and way to old to and frail to do harsh stuff like that especially when she hasn't built any muscle for that sport with such a big heavy guy on her back.
It would be another story if she was a tall fit older horse but she's not. Most horse only live till their 25 or 30. She'll be much happier to live out in pasture as a companion only horse.

Have a coggins done on her and it should tell you a pretty approximate age. If the doc says she's 25 plus, though, I believe him.

If horse is healthy and has good wellfare, it can be ridden in any age, even 25+, but just from looking at her....she needs to retire bro...
Everyone seemes to feel sorry for this horse but she might be in excellent health and may have a lot of energy! who knows!
At my old stable there was a 30 year old horse who was absolutely the most energic horse there. She loved jumping and running and her body was totally on board with it aswell. No issues, no aces, no nothing. It was almost impossible to make her trot over a small jump because in her mind SHE HAD TO RUN like she was 1 year old. Amazing horse. No way to tell she was 30, except on her teeth
She's a lame old skinny pony that probably has been neglected and not ridden for years. Older horses usely have problems gaining weight and a small pony like that would not be able to saport a guy like that.
If she's was a healthy in shape older horse the only thing you need to worry about is spine and joint problems as like people it can be exstreamly painful to move on.
I'm sorry but I would never jump a older horse I know so many retired jumping horses that have arthritis and can barely walk. That horse has sirved its owner for so many years and the best thanks you can give them is retirement.

Rescued five weeks ago. She’s my best friend.
We had a 28 year old mare working on our riding school for the smallest kids, she was a amazing mare but sadly had to be put down because she got sick. We have another 23 year old gelding who's amazing has just gotten a bit grumpy with age, our youngest horse is 8 :3

Because getting another horse cost a lot and putting that horse in a rescue will almost always mean that that older horse will never get adopted. But I do agree he should not barrel race that horse nor even ride the poor thing. Riding is not all you can do with a horse.

It depends, but roughly around 25 to about 35 year old. This horse in the video is way too old to do barrel racing.
