    I add a tin of tomatoes, grated carrot and celery plus a tip from my cousin who is half Italian, is to add a couple of spoonfuls of milk at the tomato paste stage and that takes the bitterness out of the tomatoes. I would also grate cheese over the top.

    My mom always adds a pinch of sugar to counter the acidity.. when we were kids she’d make it with hamburger meat, now she uses very lean ground beef (96%) and adds veggies to make it healthier... we really like it

    I like mine a little saucy so I put marinara sauce instead of tomato paste.

    Tammy Sue...I make this also, and my trick is to put some Tabasco in...delicious. And you are right, bread and butter, always!!

    Good Evening Dunn family! We make this very similar in the north east, but we also add diced green bell pepper with the onion and call it American Chop Suey.

    This made me think back when I first made elbow pasta when my sister and I shared an apartment and hadn’t cooked much at all. I didn’t have a clue and prepared the entire box! So.....much.....pasta! I love this kind of dish, it is a comfort food dish!

    we called that johnny marzetti in my family. it's also called American goulash in some parts of the country

    • @sonyafox3271
      @sonyafox3271 3 роки тому

      That’s what they called it at school, Johnny Marzetti was just beefaroni with cheese on top baked. American Goulosh is made 2 different ways, one like a soup but with peppers in it as well as canned tomatoes or sauce. Then the other version is with peppers sauce or sauce and canned tomatoes with onion, but, you make it more like a casserole like Johnny Marzetti add cheese on top and bake it.

    I have to have seasoning on all my home cooked food. I don't think I could eat without it.

    I would use a small can of tomato sauce cos I like it saucier!! And Im sure some cheese on top would've made it heavenly !

    You must be a home ec teacher. I made it and I was proud of myself. However I replaced the tomato sauce with marinara sauce for a little more of a kick Good with italian bread and butter.

    Do you salt your pasta water? I used to love this as a kid with bread and butter. We used just plain wonder bread.

    So Smart of you to mention how no one should put any melted fats down the drain. Some young cooks may not have been told that.

    The key is tomato paste, but it's not good to put too much. For the amount I see here, I think, for me, half the can would be good. Now onions, you can add more it goes well with tomato paste.
