We should really be investing in groundwater storage. There is ~80x the capacity underground as there is above ground

For all the history, this is highly seasonal, thin soil pasture that the ranchers probably go broke on many years having to buy hay to keep any stock going. The coverage specified, there isn't a river. Unless there is urban sprawl nearby, eminent domain payoff might not look too bad to these hardscrabble folks.

We need to build more reservoirs. The population is growing. Water keeps getting wasted when they open the dams to combat flooding from excess rain 🌧️.

Actually new studies are coming out that storing water might be better And hold more capacity then most dams without losing nature sites. Ground water storage might be the future then dams.

I think there are some groundwater-retrieval projects, but still experimental? For the first time in decades, the Sacramento at Red Bluff is flowing through the bypass, and all out to sea.(Dam full!) What an opportunity! Wise friends once told me there was a massive oak forest in the Central Valley watershed that held back the floods and allowed it to filter below. But also, before dams, ships filled their barrels with fresh water in San Francisco Bay to the Golden Gate! Just history.... @@nicksalgado22

You realize the entire Bay Area and Sacramento, Stockton, all that are part of the Sacramento River Delta right? It's massive. So "just north" is really "just north" as it is still south of Shasta reservoir which is ultimately the head of the Sac River. River Deltas are MASSIVE. Amazon, Nile, Mississippi deltas... cmon man.

Id rather not destroy beautiful pristine land to be destroyed by hundreds of feet of water miles long. Housing, schools, airport, so much could be built there and with more stringent water restrictions as well as mandating retention ponds and collective devices in neighborhoods could help save water while still serving people who need it. I see this as a TERRIBLE idea.
