- Learn why crisp, vector artwork may appear pixelated in Illustrator. Details below...

Within the View menu is the toggle, Pixel Preview. When active, Illustrator will simulate on screen what rasterised graphics, such as an exported JPG or PNG, will look like. When Pixel Preview is inactive, vectors will be shown crisp and sharp regardless of the magnification.
Keyboard shortcut
Mac: Option + Command + Y
Windows: Alt + Control + Y
When in Pixel Preview, Illustrator will display "Pixel Preview" along with the name in the tab for the file.
When creating a new file, there is a Preview Mode option within the dialog box that is generally set to Default. If set to Pixel Preview, this mode will be on at file creation. It can be easily toggled off/on using the methods previously outlined.

Thank you!! This was very helpful 🙏
I appreciate you saying that. Thank you.
I see a lot of tutorials for problems I encounter and some people are long-winded with their process and explanation. It's like they didn't prepare and/or are just winging it. You, on the other hand, are concise and deliberate. The pacing and the flow was damn near perfect. You got a subscriber today!
Thank you Alex and welcome to the channel. I really appreciate you recognising the effort I put into making these videos. I wish you well with all of your designs.
Helpful and straight to the point thank you
Thank you. Best of luck with all your designs.
Thank you. This was driving me nuts. 🙏
Thanks mate. I know exactly how you feel.
You are my hero dude
I was editing some of my vector for portfolio but don't know how it turned into pixel preview
Thanks mate. Happy to have helped you out and best of luck with the portfolio.
Great video ;) you save my time and work
Happy to have helped you out Omar. Thank you.
Very helpful thanks!
Thank you. Best of luck with your designs.
Thanks, Michael! 😃
Cheers mate
Life-saver. I thought I trashed my file lol. Thanks!
I know that feeling. Thank you and happy to have helped you out.
great helpful video
Thank you. I'm happy to hear that.
THANK YOU. This little tip just saved me hours of aggravation!
Hey that's really great to hear. Thanks for letting me know.
Is pixel preview a guarantee of how bad it will look?
What's the best way to have text that is converted to path have smoother edges because overprint and pixel preview both look like a messier rasterized image then the vector and I don't know what sign printers will actually be printing from as they asked me to convert text to path
When text is converted to a path, that content is still vector. In other words the resolution is still effectively infinite. As long as you are sending vector content to the printers (such as a PDF) and not pixel based content (such as a JPG) your print should look great.
@@MichaelBullo
Unfortunately this is not proving to be the case. I have now dealt with two printers and due to probably the fact that I use illustrator to add a bevel and drop shadow the text is very rastered on the edge no matter what we do. It's one thing to have it look pretty and illustrator but nobody prints from that. The first printer must have been using an older version of illustrator and the printer I'm trying to work with now is trying to help but the text looks fuzzier on the edges and some other issues. They had me convert to pass and told me some other outline was still trying to show so they said they had to flatten the image. When they sent the proof everything now that it's flat and doesn't have the same crisp quality to it then the stroke edge is got a noticeable zipper effect.
I don't know what the point of illustrator is if printers can't use the effects contained and if the quality of image degrades.
@@Thatsmessedupman Even if the artwork had to be flattened I'm surprised to hear you are seeing such obvious pixelation. It's hard for me to comment further without seeing what's involved.
I'm going to recommend you post this question along with images and/or screen captures to the Adobe Illustrator forum. Lot's of Illustrator gurus hang out there.

Great Video
Thank you very much

Great video - thanks MIchael. I have a Q: How can I use EPS files in Photoshop combined with JPEG images to create one LARGE printable images?
Thank you. You can happily throw everything into a Photoshop composition, JPEG and EPS files included. When you Place an EPS file into a Photoshop document you can link to the original or include an embedded copy. Either way, the content is still vector and contained within an editable Smart Object. Keep in mind that what you export out of Photoshop will likely be pixel based.
@@MichaelBullo But if it shows that it will look pixelated when I export (which is what is happening to me) then how do I fix it so that it DOES NOT look pixelated when I export? Nothing I’ve done seems to work….
Help please!!!
thank you sooo much
Thank you. Enjoy those new sharp lines ;)
Thank you 😊
Thanks mate
thank you
Thank you
Please someone help I'm losing my mind. I have this problem just not quite as pixelated as pixel preview. Curved and diagonal lines are visibly pixelated and I can't figure out why. I am not in pixel preview. I have tried things like increasing PPI, image tracing, rasterizing nothing works. When I draw a diagonal line especially the edges of the stroke look very pixelated.
Can you elaborate on what you are doing with PPI? Where are you changing this?
@@MichaelBullo Yes the only place I’ve found to change this on Windows is when I create the project. I have tried setting it to 300 and 355 PPI and I still get this low quality look on diagonal and curved lines specifically. Straight lines look totally fine. I will also mention it happens whether or not the object has a stroke.
I also have tried viewing the project in both RGB and cmyk, I have tried viewing with cpu and gpu, turned off anti-aliasing, and viewed the project on multiple monitors. Viewing with cpu did make it look slightly better, but not by much. It also looks the same when I export as png or jpeg.
And finally it gets worse the further I zoom out on the canvas. The further I zoom in the less pixelated the edge appears but it never becomes perfect. Hopefully there is something you could think of that is causing this. It’s like my shapes and lines aren’t vectors or something.
@@joeey4k554 Have you tried resetting the preferences? This will often solve the problem when an Adobe program starts acting weird.
But if it shows that it will look pixelated when I export (which is what is happening to me) then how do I fix it so that it DOES NOT look pixelated when I export? Nothing I’ve done seems to work….
Can you provide specific details on how you are exporting? Could it be that your export is fine but you are just zooming in on a small image, giving the illusion that it is pixelated?
@@MichaelBullo Thank you so much for writing back!!!!
Sure!
Its a logo I’ve vectorized from scratch in Illustrator to insert in a booklet I’m designing in Adobe InDesign (Color Mode: RBG) The logo is set in inches with 300 dpi in an A4 artboard and the shape is big enough to almost reach the sides, but when I export PNG and zoom in a bit the borders look pixelated.
@@claragomezb.7849 Thank you. Happy to help. In case you don’t know, you might not need to export at all. You can happily place an Illustrator file directly into InDesign and all of your vector paths remain nice and sharp.
@@MichaelBullo Yes, that would work for digital stuff, but not when exporting the logo alone because the issue would still be there. Has this ever happened to you? It’s just…odd 😅
@@claragomezb.7849 Have you tried increasing the resolution when exporting?
Aaaah thanks a lot, i think i mess with my file, or it was default setting to lowered my file after so much object i make
Thanks for letting me know this helped you out. I appreciate it.
