I got massively abused by my stepmom from the ages of 7 to 17. Before that I loved going to the library, reading, and observing nature and how machines worked. Sadly, I became an F student and barely graduated. I tried to go to college but had high anxiety and low self-esteem. I was raised to think I was dumb and lazy, rather than encouraged for being curious and independent.
I'm now a 50-year-old straight-A college senior. I still get anxious every assignment, but I know it's PTSD, not reality. I have realized the grades aren't even really that important in the big picture. Professors like me, but no one at my job even knew I didn't have a degree until I mentioned that I was a part-time student.
I want to finish my degree, but what has become more important to me is to LIVE life feeling healthy and loved by my community. So much "success" is predicated on being deferential to an unearned chain-of-command.
