  • Hello you guys.. here is an update on my how I've been sealing decals/designs on my Starbucks cups. When using permanent vinyl it is NOT necessary to seal your designs/decals. But as we know, even if the vinyl is permanent, with time, it will eventually start to come off. This is why is seal my decals using Brite Tone from the Crystalac company. Brite Tone is a non toxic, non yellowing top coat. As you know, I no longer use epoxy for safety concerns. All cups that are coated on my channel are all sealed using Brite Tone.
    *THIS CUP WAS MADE FOR PERSONAL USE ONLY.. I DO NOT SELL THESE CUPS.
    *** IN THE VIDEO I PUT A PICTURE OF THE SATIN Brite Tone top coat. THE ONE I USE IS THE GLOSS FINISH... SORRY!

    • @MelissaCrafter
      @MelissaCrafter  4 роки тому +5

      After 5-7 days the cups are okay for light use. The brite tone should only be added to the outside of your cup. I’m not so sure how you tasted chemicals . Maybe you mean smelled like chemicals? I’ve used a cup 5 days after my last coat and there isn’t a smell to it anymore at that point.

    Will the decal ever be smooth and 100% under the poly or will you still feel the edges? I'd done 4 layers and it's still very rigid. Just want to make sure I'm not doing something wrong.

    • @MelissaCrafter
      @MelissaCrafter  3 роки тому

      I used Brite Tone.... depending on the gloss finish you are going for, you can continue to coat until you no longer feel the decal. I usually coat until I can no longer feel the decal and the cup is 100% smooth. if you are feeling the edges you can try lightly spot sanding with 400 grit sanding paper. Run your finger through the cup and sand where ever you feel the decal . Hope this helps :)

    • @MelissaCrafter
      @MelissaCrafter  4 роки тому +1

      A lot of people experience this. This also happens with brite tone. I can always get it to cover up though. What I do when I notice that happening is that I start with the logo first and then do the rest of the cup . After i finish coating the entire cup.. I go over the logo part again. That usually covers it... if it doesn’t, I repeat the same process on the second coat and it’s covered on the second coat .

    Hi Melissa how do you prevent streaking on the cups? How do you get them to look so smooth?

    • @MelissaCrafter
      @MelissaCrafter  4 роки тому +2

      Hello ... thin coats is key to not having streaks on your cup. If your coats are too thick it doesn’t allow your cup to self level and it dries unevenly. If your coats are thin , after a couple minutes of spinning, the brite tone self levels... this gives off a smooth finish after each coat. Hope this helps (:

      At any Starbucks location. They cost $4 & come with the straw & lid . They are called reusable cold cups. They are becoming harder to find these days since there’s a lot of people selling them. What I do is call the store before going & ask if they have them. My local Starbucks let me know when they receive shipment for them so I go on those days. If you do find them before they unpack them they will sell them to you by the pack of 15.

      Hello! Thanks so much 😊 for cups with just vinyl design I usually do about 5-6 coats. For glitter cups I usually do around 9-12 coats depending on the glitter type. For glitter cups I usually do glitter... 3 coats of brite tone. Sand . Two more coats of brite tone. Sand. Then I add my decals. Then continue coating until the cup is smooth. Sanding after every 3 coats. I hope this helps!

    Hello. I love your videos. I have a question though. I’ve been reading that crystalac shouldn’t be applied to these cups because it will crack. Is it true? I wanted to seal a cup but now I’m scared to.

      Hello & thanks so much 🥰
      As long as the plastic is rigid then the cup should be fine. These Starbucks cups are rigid plastic & ive done many. I’ve never experience any cracking.

  • @hydrobon
    @hydrobon 3 роки тому

    Did you do any prepping beforehand like sanding the cup? I saw some people on the FB group say its necessary to sand/prep but I cant do that to my hydro flask :/

    • @MelissaCrafter
      @MelissaCrafter  3 роки тому

      Yes prepping is an important step. Hydro flasks are usually powder coated so they would have to be stripped down (by sanding) to the stainless steel part or else the brite tone won’t adhere

    Hi i have a question when i apply brite tone to my cups it always tends to separate on the starbucks logo has that happened to you ? I tried washing and sanitizing them but it still separates

    • @MelissaCrafter
      @MelissaCrafter  4 роки тому +3

      Start with the logo when adding a coat . Then continue with the rest of your cup. Once your done add a little more to the logo part. I usually keep rubbing the logo part with my finger until I no longer see it separate. Usually a couple minutes. Then I wait 4 hours for my coat to dry.. sometimes you’ll still have it separate. So in the next coat I do the same thing.. and it should be covered in the second coat. Hope this helps (:

    • @MelissaCrafter
      @MelissaCrafter  3 роки тому +1

      hello.. so your cup should not be peeling... did you prep your cup before adding Brite Tone? Prep by sanding lightly with 400 grit sanding paper... wash and dry. Make sure the plastic cup you are using is rigid plastic. Also try adding thin coats on plastic cups. ..Ive found thin coats work best :)

      @@ValYo0623 I have never done this before! I just recently got an epoxy resin kit that came with a tumbler and a few plastic cups. I sealed the plastic cup and on the last coat after about an hour it looked like there was streaks on it like brush strokes. On a few Cricut Facebook groups I follow I was told never use epoxy on plastic cups. Then I also was told if you use anything to seal plastic cups when the cup bends the seal will crack or break. The plastic cup I sealed is on the drying rack right now and I was going to see how the cup did on Sunday since that will be a full 72 hours.

      You’re welcome 😊 so I always continue coats with brite tone til I can no longer feel the decal. It depends mostly on the type of decal you apply to your cup. A cup with a single layer decal (like a name) with cover with about 5-6 coats. Decals with multiple layers will take a few more .

    Great video. I followed your link for the brite tone. Do you know what is the difference between the Brite tone and the "Extreme Protection Polyurethane" with the blue label?

    • @MelissaCrafter
      @MelissaCrafter  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks SO MUCH :) so brite tone is higher in solids so you can build up a gloss faster with Brite Tone. The blue label Extreme Protection Polyurethane is also good but its lower in solids so you will still have to end with Brite Tone to achieve a glossy finish. A lot of people start off with Extreme protection to glitter or to start building up their gloss and then do their last couple coats with brite tone. They do this since the Extreme Protection is cheaper than Brite Tone . Hope this helps (:

    • @MelissaCrafter

      Ive never tried coating a cup without a spinner. I think the only way it would work without a spinner is if your coats are super super thin... that way its not dripping.

    • @MelissaCrafter
      @MelissaCrafter  3 роки тому +1

      Sorry for the late reply! Im so glad you were able to fix it! Brite tone is definitely very forgiving. A quick sand can get rid of any imperfections. The holes you mentioned sound like something people call orange peel. It resembles an actual orange peel with kind of inward holes everywhere. This tends to happen when the previous BT coat is too thick or it doesn't have enough dry time in between coats. hope this helps :) if you ever have any other question you can always message me on instagram.
