"Waterworld: A Live Sea War Spectacular," also known simply as "Waterworld" or the "Waterworld Stunt Show," is a live performance at Universal Studios theme parks, inspired by the 1995 "Waterworld" film. This attraction can be found at Universal Studios Hollywood (October 21, 1995), Universal Studios Japan (since 2001), Universal Studios Singapore (since 2010), and Universal Studios Beijing (since 2021), with its debut coinciding with the movie's release. Despite the film's lackluster reception, the stunt show has garnered critical acclaim, even winning a 1996 Thea Award from the Themed Entertainment Association. It continues to be a favorite among park visitors.
Crafted by Ben Hurst, the show's narrative picks up after the movie's conclusion. It follows Helen as she leaves "Dryland" to rescue her friends at the "Atoll." The cast includes Helen, the Deacon, the Mariner, "Atollers," and "Smokers." Lasting 16 minutes, the performance is packed with stunts executed on water, land, and air, enhanced with many special effects such as pyrotechnics, flames, and water, highlighted by a dramatic seaplane crash landing. The show's soundtrack is derived from pieces of the film's score.
Audience seating is divided into three arena sections, with the first five rows designated as "Soak Zones," where spectators are likely to get wet from splashes and other effects.
The storyline unfolds as the Atollers welcome Helen back upon her return. She shares news of Dryland's discovery and warns of the Smokers' pursuit. The attack commences with a seaplane and Smokers infiltrating on jet skis and water skis. Despite the Atollers' resistance, using water cannons, they are gradually overpowered. The Deacon arrives, taking Helen hostage to learn about Dryland's location, leading to a dramatic showdown. The Mariner surfaces, sparking a fierce battle that sees the Smokers defeated. The climax sees the Deacon set ablaze and falling into the water, igniting the fuel and concluding the show with Helen and the Mariner's narrow escape on a boat as the atoll explodes.
