It almost feels like magic when variations carryover to big lifts. When I started using band pressing, my OHP blew up
OHP is one of my goals. I'm at 135 for 2 reps right now. My goal is to get to one rep of 155 before may. What is band pressing?
@@rye-bread5236 you attach a bands to the bottom of a rack and the other end around a barbell. When you press, the band gets longer and increases the resistance. It changes the strength curve and makes the lockout more difficult
@@michal_a_witek Genius! Sounds cool but my gym does not have bands.

Well I just realized I’m an advanced lifter according to them there charts. Been stuck still thinking of myself as a beginner. Thanks for the pick me up Alex.
Happy to hear that Zach! Elite incoming :)
AlphaDestiny thanks for the response boss man I’m tryna be like you when I grow up. I have finally begun to see the light concerning exercise variation.
i'm intermediate and i absolutely feel like novice, except i don't progress anymore like novice
hassa bench 310 with butt off the seat, 300 touch n go for a pretty solid rep. OHP 185. Deadlift 405 (I don’t really train deadlift with consistency, my grip became a limiting factor at 4 plates but I feel with straps I coulda got 440-450). Squat 365. He didn’t featur this but I’ve built up to 150 weighted chin-up I’m proud of. .... I weigh 180. Been lifting about a year and a half.
hassa as you can prolly tell I train the the show muscles with more passion than legs. Lol.
Yours and Blaha's training philosophy's are pretty much identical right now.
i love jason blaha
Godspeed Jason
😞
Jason bashed this style of training endlessly and mocked Alex for it right up until he started doing it himself lol
Jason has given alex some credit in his past few videos also.
Alex could you explain in a video why different people lift the same intensity with different speeds. For example some people's one rep max looks like a warm up but in fact they cannot do any more than that.
That's very interesting actually
People who lift one rep maxes at a higher speed are most likely more explosive and better athletes
Point in case: Clarence kennedy pulling 660lbs his first time sumo’ing.
Peter Soar case In point..??

You should hook up with Brian from Neversate, he has been preaching variation for years.

@@lastsonofkrypton3918 lol get you brain out of the gutter 😜
Are you telling me your deadlifts aren't impressive? You must not be taking into account your height and weight for sure
Shorter is better for deadlifts
Brandon Dennis Idk bout that
@@TheBadgerInMinecraft of course other factors are involved like arm length, hip structure, torso to leg ratio... But generally what matters most is how low a person's hands are to the ground. For this reason shorter people usually have small ROM on deadlift although they don't necessarily have very good leverage at the starting position
ProcardcollecterAndGamer yea shorter for deadlift is definitely better than taller no question. And even when it isn’t it’s due to extremely long arms or legs that don’t make this statement fully true watch any 6’3 or higher dude deadlift and someone in the mid 5’ deadlift obvious difference in weight, form, and stress.

Facts bro high level skills that require high neurological demands like Olympic lifts and gymnastic skills need direct specificity that’s it . Strength is strength !
I mainly train olympic lifts and by doing that by squat and deads have increased insanly, with almost no deads.
dennis edlund I bet!
Hey what are you thoughts in frequency in lifting vs variations. To be more specific some people feel if your bench stalls try increasing frequency. Do you prefer adding variation instead of frequency to help break through plateaus? I hope that made sense lol
I train like this now. Quickest gains in my weak points in my entire 15 years of lifting. Just hit a 160 pound dip at 190 and below parallel, without training dips at all. Just got stronger on incline/flat/ohp with fat grips on the bar.
I'm not fully understanding the lesson or take away from this video? Is he saying train like a bodybuilder for hypertrophy. Or that working the muscles for a lift is just as good as working the lift? Like training chest and tricep individually and variations = improving bench?
@@rye-bread5236 that's sort of what he's saying, except it's not just random isolation stuff, its getting strong at movements with a similar motion to the big lift... so bench press or dips, lifts similar would be incline bench, floor press etc
@@carisigmafitness4171 Pullups are one of my main lifts. In order to improve according to what you're saying. Do inverted rows, lat pulldowns, and chinups?

Hi Alex, I've started to strength training back in 2016. It took me a while before deciding that I would train for strength. Elliot Hulse's channel, Omar and you, were my inspiration to decide going to strength training. I do appreciate weightlifting, calisthenics, powerlifting and strongman, but I cannot see myself in any of these labels.
Some friends of mine also train for strength, but some of them are more related to powerlifting. I do understand that powerlifting is more than the big 3, but in my opinion, I need the big 6: Squat, Bench, Deadlift, OHP, Dips and Pull ups.
Thanks for sharing your experience with us. :-)
When you said "close enough lifts", it clicked for me. That makes fucking sense.
Hey alex is a stronger muscle a bigger muscle?
Yes and no
b dabarber more often than not yes but it can vary due to genetics
I think the most accurate way to describe it is a bigger muscle has more strength potential
I think it works like this: If your muscle gets stronger, then it will get bigger.
That doesn't mean that if you are stronger than someone else, you can expect to be bigger than them. That is dependent on genetics. Therefore you shouldn't compare yourself to others. Focus on getting stronger, cuz when you get stronger you get bigger. Gaining strength is the only way to gain mass
Mathias Gabrielsson Team 3D alpha says otherwise
I agree with this, but I don't think it's true regarding form. While I think variations can help with aspects of form, I think that if you want to be proficient at a lift, you need to practice the lift.
I like this video. I am going to subscribe to your channel now. I think some peoples backs can round form hamstring tightness too, and pelvic tilts if they are sat down too much which can cause tight hip flexors etc. But yeah great video man. I stopped barbell benching for a few months as I hit a plateau and went onto dumbbells I stead. Then when I went back to barbell I added another 20kg onto my 1rm.
Alex please shave your head and grow out the beard ! You would look badass bro.

U said bigger muscle is stronger muscle
U aren't strong as vadym oleynik he's nearly swole as u
And I give u one example
Larry wheels being buff squat to parallel 385 kg and weighs 121 kg but most of the weight lifters squat more than him and squatting deep
So bro bigger muscle is not likely to be strong muscle

Hey Alex, can you make a video on Bad Training/Workout Days, where you just feel like shit and no energy in the gym when doing your exercises on one of your days? Would really love to hear your view on this and how you recover from it mentally.
A bigger muscle is not always a stronger muscle. A bigger muscle raises the ceiling, but it won't always be strongerm
Alex got any tips for golfers elbow? Or tennis elbow? It keeps coming back
All u need tok be is strong in squat bench rows overheadand dl and calisthenics. Throw in your cardio and u good
alex you get me fired up to get fucking strong i appreciate your content and watching you and myself grow
Completely agree. I'm afraid that I will injure myself again with heavy conv deadlifts, so I do snatch grip RDLs. Propably getting similar strength gains except in the lower back.
There was a period of time where my hip was irritated by deadlifts but I was still able to do rack pulls, RDL’s and the squat. I didn’t deadlift much at the time and I believe my max was 315 for 5. I came back after my hip was feeling good to pull 405 for 3. I couldn’t believe how much stronger I had gotten at the deadlift without deadlifting.
Hoping the same will happen for me when I eventually start deadlifting
Same thing happened to me when I hurt my lower back. I swapped out deadlifts for lots of sets of bodyweight GHRs and reverse hypers and I swapped out low bar back squats for front squats. Deadlifted for the first time in 3 months a few weeks ago and pulled 95lbs more than I ever have.
ditto. I didn't have a place to deadlift for a while so I focused on RDL's, rack pulls and good mornings. When I went back to my deadlift I was significantly stronger at it.
Malnourished Sudanese Shlong I Hope so too!
Put links to the equipment you use in your home gym
Hey Alex, what do you think about the recent explosion of lifters setting new bench press records? Do you think bench press standards will rise and will 315 and 400 pound benches be more common?
Back then 315 used to be very rare, now it's getting more common than ever before. I think 350-365 may be the norm soon (for serious lifters), and eventually 405 will be the new 315.
Powerlifting was badly overshadowed by bodybuilding for many years. People wanted to be jacked like ronnie Coleman but couldnt figure out why they couldnt get there with bro split bodybuilding. Powerlifting programming was niche until recently.
kamikazekopec it started with Arnold (with his rivalry with Franco Columbo) and Lou Ferigno: both were actors that brought bodybuilding into the public eye. Frank Zane became an icon that inspired many to join the sport. Then for decades it was the rivalries between bodybuilders that generated hype in the public. Powerlifting has none of these things. No one famous to advocate it and no popular rivalries to draw people in. Although it’s gotten more popular within the last decade, the public isn’t aware of powerlifting so it’s still very niche. Though that’s what makes it cool: being involved in a sport people don’t know about.
Advanced bench! But between intermediate and advanced on everything else 😔

What types of bars do you own? I know the swiss bar and a normal bar bell but is there any other bars you own or recommend?
Safety squat bar...the one in the background.
I've been doing slightly paused squats, low to the ground and OHP for a few months, literally only that. A few weeks ago I did a bench session, aside from the fact that my front delt was weak (I noticed it and will fix it) I was hitting the same numbers on my bench as I did before. I PRed on my deadlift by 5lbs and it wasn't hard. I hadn't done one in 4 months.
I am a noob though - less than 2 plate bench, squat right now is in the 260 range. OHP, I did 1 plate for a relatively fast rep. My deadlift PR was 280. I was stronger on the squat when I exercised 3 times a week (225x12), now I only do it 2 times a week.
Hey Alex I’m 208 17 percent body fat around 5”9. I’ve been training for around 10 months and I can bench 225 for 5. My deadlift max is only 405. I don’t really care about squat. Can you help me get my deadlift up any tips?
I didn't realize my squat was at the intermediate level for my body weight I'm especially surprised because I'm carrying an extra 40 pounds of unnecessary fat at the moment. I guess I should try for 425 just to get into advanced for my squat.

Hey alex, who do you think is going to win this weekends main and co-main events at UFC 248. Personally I think both champs defend their belts.
First off, much respect to you for working on your body the way you have. I'm not trying to be a smart ass, but what (if any) "supplements"do you take to maximize your results?
Hair's on point
“A bigger muscle is a stronger muscle” I would be inclined to agree with this, but out of personal experience I can’t. I’m about 5’9, 160lbs with a decently built frame and very little body fat. My buddy is 6’1, 200lbs with a similar lean frame but with great arm genetics - his arms are much bigger than mine. Our chests are about the same size, his is a little bigger. Now, when we go to comparing benchpresses, I can put up about 235 for 1 rep, and he could probably push 200 on a good day. Due to his size, I would have anticipated his benchpress to be +50lbs more than mine, but it isn’t. I’ve always wondered, how does this make any sense? It completely contradicts my previous notion that bigger=stronger.
I'm not taking anyone's side here but he is 4 inches taller than you which means his arms are likely much longer than yours. Longer arms = longer descent = harder bench
Actualy if your back rounds when you do conventional deadlift it means that you have weak glutes and strong lower back. I saw this tip on the westside barbell facebook page.
