Barrel Length Vs FPS Velocity Vs Power Block - SCIENCE ALERT

  • Does increasing or decreasing the length of your barrel increase or decrease the FPS ( Feet Per Second ) of your shot? I have always wanted to know by how much - and does all these power options we keep getting fed actually doing anything? So I get my chronograph out with my calculator and get testing.

    Excellent video and highly educational. Justified my 700mm barrel upgrade! Kind of fits in with the upgrades. I took my Gen 1 Impact, added the power plenum and slug probe. Achieving the same velocities at 35 bar lower reg setting. It was a huge difference! Do temper your expectations on what upgrades can do, but yes, they do work. Well done!

    Thank you for doing this research; I appreciate the time that it took you to put into doing this for us. Have you ever done, or do you have any plans for the future in doing just as thorough an analysis on suppressors? I would love to see an unbiased look at the DonnyFL line and the 0db line head to head on one specific airgun, showing sound levels at the muzzle, at 25 yards, and at 50 yards. I'm primarily a back yard shooter and want to shield the sound of my gun's bark from my neighbors as much as possible. Oh, and as for the trolls and the know-it-alls... just ban them from the page. "Be a jerk and get escorted to the door".

    Your excellent videos have gone a long way in helping me get back to air guns, with a PCP this time - 30 years on. It would be a real pity if the few - but undeniably loud - social media trolls got your goat to the point where you stopped in sheer disgust. Fingers crossed!

    Great vid and a real brain fryer. Absolutely on the mark with how it all works. The power block basically is designed for high reg pressure so won’t at 100bar make any real difference as the airflow is being governed by the other ports once you stuff the reg up to 150+ bar then it will still flow freely and will give serious speed increases over all barrel lengths although might actually over power the 500mm as that’s quite easy to do

    Given the restraints of practicality and cost have to say nice job Giles. It was interesting to see the difference between between the two valve set ups . Old farts like me are pretty familiar with the compromise afforded between barrel length and power versus accuracy,even more so with springers. But it was good to see you put your money where your mouth is to demonstrate this effect to the world in general. Love your show don't let trolls get you down for the most part they dont mean any harm rightly or wrongly they just want to widen the debate.

    Giles this was fantastic to take in, last weekend I purchased a tin of .177 knock outs tried them in five different rifles 4 being pcp and my trusty hw97k. I only found the hw97k was the Rifle that would give the best result and all are sub 12. Do you by any chance have any idea other than slugs are not meant to be used in sub 12 rifles but preformed well in a springer. I am stumped but as you would say at the end of you video CARRY ON.

    Great experiment with valuable data. I surmise that if the reg pressure was set higher with the power block experiment, barrel length increase would result in increased speed up to a point. The comment by Joseph Boothe sums things up perfectly

    I like tuning cars, power balance is what we call it. Along with the law of diminishing returns. Tuning a airgun is the same concept. Each thing you change effects the cars power curve differently, everything changed together port matching, length of headers or intake, cams, timing, ect... of proper size puts the vehicle/airgun in harmony.

    Do your findings also relate to springers? Would a standard length barrel give slightly more speed/power than the carbine model?

    • @Ijusthopeitsquick
      @Ijusthopeitsquick 2 роки тому +3

      No. Most spring guns have barrel lengths that are sub optimal (too long) for velocity, same as 22 LR barrels. That's because a spring gun's compression chamber has a small volume, meaning the pressure behind the pellet drops rapidly during the firing cycle and at some point, as the pellet travels down the barrel, friction forces are greater than the force exerted by the compressed air.

    • @kims2r
      @kims2r 2 роки тому

      There is no correlation between barrel length and accuracy, that myth has been busted a long time ago:) the problem with shorter barrels is that there’s often turbulence behind the pellet/slug because the projectile leaves the barrel sooner, and there’s still air being pushed out. The solution to that is tuning for a shorter burst of air, a shorter time where the valve is open, so there’s no more air being released when the projectile leaves the barrel. You can achieve this with higher reg pressure and less hammerspring tension. The higher pressure will close the valve faster

    Have a day off for your self and have some fun shooting stupid things for the hell of it.
    Your love of air guns was what made you go self-employed and I can understand why but if you don't have time to enjoy your love, it will start to get unbearable, do something really daft and enjoy doing it, don't let the work get you down !
