Nick Gage on death matches, AEW, Dark Side of the Ring and almost killing David Arquette

- Nick Gage is a professional wrestler and the "King of the death match". He sits down with Chris Van Vliet at Slingshot House in Santa Monica, CA to talk about his episode Dark Side of the Ring on Vice TV, how he became interested in his ultra-violent style of wrestling, being inspired by Cactus Jack and Terry Funk, wrestling for GCW (Game Changer Wrestling), his dream opponents, going to prison for bank robbery, dying during a match and being brought back to life, almost killing actor David Arquette in a match, what scares him and much more. Nick Gage rose to fame recently when he debuted on AEW in a match against Chris Jericho and also for his match with Matt Cardona in which Cardona won the CGW Championship.

Huge thank you to Slingshot House in Santa Monica, CA for letting us use their awesome podcast studio for this interview!

Nick was definitely talking about Kenny/Okada!!
Can you get Jordan Oliver on a episode soon?He just faced Nick Gage for the GCW world title.
I'm a big fan of yours Chris, but jesus christ dude, how did you not realize that Nick was talking about Okada! Remember the classics Omega and Okada had in njpw, including the hour long match that Nick was referring to? Lol
Kvo
Can you interview amazing redd or ICP
Nick Gage, as controversial as he is, should be commended for this: He fought addiction, fought mental health struggles, and now has mounted a comeback and seems to be in the best place he has ever been. Deathmatches take balls, but the match against life takes real courage. MDK!
Amen

All those good people gone and this idiot still lives on. Such a shame
He's a garbage human being please don't be fooled
@@d3kadE905 TBH i don't really know anything about his personal life other than reading about his past addictions & the bank robbery, so if that's what you're basing your comments off of than I definitely cannot agree with what you've said.
But I'm perfectly willing to admit maybe you know a lot more than me about his actual life (his beliefs, etc.) so if I'm missing something, and you feel that you have the time to fill me in, please do! I'm always willing to learn and absolutely HATE when someone I support turns out to be a person i would not even shake hands with in real life, it's so frustrating & infuriating ya know?
So have thousands of other people, Nick Gage is not a nice person
@@paulogilvie6262 So? what do you mean?
This interveiw changed my perception of Nick Gage as a person and his motivations in life in general. Honest, humble guy. Nothing but respect.
Same. I really thought he's just some dangerous guy who would kill you but man, dude he's actually a nice guy who fell on hard times.
Nick Gage is the nicest guy you are we going to meet he also motivated me before my match in GCW Debut & it was the first one to come out to me after my match
I recently watched Dark Side, and thought he was a dick for what he did to Arquette. I mean, I'd be the type of guy going into a death match, protecting my opponent while keeping it snug. But overall, I do like Gage now, and wish nothing but the best for him.
@Uncle Debbie are you going to put this on every comment? I think you're lying.
@Uncle Debbie what?
Gage: I was a little surprised that you asked me to do this.
CVV: Come on! I was more surprised that you watched my interviews!
That right there, made me smile. Real recognizing real. Great channel, CVV!

@@montana7 Hands down!
@@montana7 he legit just gets better with every interview
That’s exactly why I send his videos to my buddies. I’ve always said Chris has the realest interviews in the game. You can definitely tell there’s comfort in all his interviews. Plus he’s a fan so you can also see the excitement on his face when they talk about anything
My favorite Nick Gage memory: I was at a CZW show in the late 2000's at the old ECW arena. I believe the match was the H8 Club vs The Best Around. As part of the angle, The Best Around cut a promo about how they were REAL wrestlers that didn't "do any of that hardcore shit" and that they challenged Nick Gage to do some "actual wrestling". Nick Gage shrugs and just starts breaking out chain wrestling like he's Dean Malenko or something. The hardcore CZW crowd LOSES THEIR MINDS and starts chanting "this is awesome" because no one expected Nick Gage to break out any sort of technical wrestling. It was such an awesome moment.
Fuck yes that actually sounds like an awesome event to be at
@@mahlymuscle It really was. CZW shows were fun back in the day. I haven't been in years but I got to see a lot of great talent go through there: Cesaro, Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens, Adam Cole, Jon Moxley, Eddie Kingston... the list goes on and on. They have a rep for being just a death match company but they helped showcase a whole generation of indie talent that went on to become big names.
@@nothingislogical what was the show called?
@@strawberrystarburstbuthuman I'm not sure but it was definitely sometime in 2008/2009.

Van Vilet has really come out of nowhere as the best wrestling interview guy going by a landslide. Always timely, always honest, always interesting. Makes me feel like I'm back in the peak of the old RF Video shoot interview VHS days (yes, I'm old), a magic other guys don't seem to capture for some reason.
I appreciate the kind words, Justin!
Well his production levels alone are better than anything RF ever put out. Add in the research and good questions and RF gets left in the dust.

Yeah, they do, but if you find something that works (like Suboxone has for me), it can save your life.
IF YOU are abusing them Yes, Some folks need them for the real pains. Big Differences also... but if you are abusing them yes causes pains you don't have..
They're not very good for chronic pain in my experience, I would only hurt more and more. I'm now capable of so much more without them. I still hurt all of the time, but ironically not as badly as when I was on opioid drugs.
That being said, I disagree with how controlled they have become. They have gotten so much more expensive than non prescription street drugs like heroin or fentanyl. It certainly played one of, if not THE biggest part in the current "epidemic"

Nick Gage deserves a lot of respect. I wish him all the best. Great interview as usual, Chris!
Thanks Chris. I’ve always been drawn to Nick and his story. No one loves the business more than Nick, and when he speaks you truly believe what he is saying. The man is real and pulls no punches. So glad that you and Nick gave everyone the opportunity to see the man behind the madness. Keep up the great work, your passion for it shines through.
Thank you for this, Chris. I've seen Gage wrestle at the CZW ToD, but only ever heard the negative stories about the guy so I didn't realize who I was seeing. This interview shed a lot of light on Nick Gage and I appreciate you doing this. I've gained a lot of respect for Gage and for that, I thank you.
And I thank you for going into this interview with an open mind!

I'm sure its been said already but the dude Gage was saying had the 1 hour iron man match with Kenny was Okada. Basically all the Omega and Okada matches are unbelievable
This is such a great interview, Nick Gage seems like just the most down to earth guy and his story is really fascinating. and I have mad respect for him for putting his

I think the person Gage was referring to in that hour long match with Omega was Okada. It was nice to hear him this interview. I don't know anything about Gage outside of him being a wrestler who does Death Matches, but it was nice to hear listening to his stories in this interview.
What a real dude, one of your best interviews Chris

Nick Gage is a man with a lot of heart and definitely a guy I gotta meet sometime soon. Excellent conversation, Chris!
Genuinely I agree with you Chris this is my fav interview
to hear a wrestler speak so candidly about their time backyard wrestling is so cool.
My first actual introduction to Nick Gage was AEW, I'd heard his name but had no idea on who he was or anything. After watching this and the Dark Side of the Ring episode and other little bits, he comes across as a real good guy who holds up to his mistakes. Massive respect to him
this is the first full length CVV interview and it is so good! you are so good at making an interview come off as a casual conversation between a friend asking another friend about their job and life; so authentic. Nick Gage is truly one of a kind and seems to have his head in a good place right now so props to him.
In the words of John Oliver: "Wrestling is better than the things you like."
Just like everyone else, I've always thought of bank robbers as horrible people, then this guy comes along and completely shatters that perception. He is clearly out of his damn mind, and yet he somehow manages to also be a good (and shockingly very mellow) dude with a big heart. It doesn't seem to make any sense that such a person can exist, and yet we have one right here. I feel like I'm in the twilight zone! This is easily one of your all-time best interviews, and the guy has so much to say that I think you're going to have to do a part 2, Chris! Maybe ask him about other non-wrestling related things next time. I want to know more about this man as a human being.
Addiction makes you do some crazy shit man. At the same time its not like nick held them up at gun point, he slipped the teller a note. What he did was wrong but he never put anyone in danger.
@@cnacks4835 Absolutely, I agree 100%. It's just really bizarre to be referring to a former bank robber as a "good guy", but he definitely does seem to be one. I wish he'd retire from that death match stuff though, because I'd hate to see a good person end up having his life drastically cut short.
Chris, thank you for this. I listen to pretty much any interview you put out and I continue to be surprised at how quickly I just get glued to the screen. You talk about the people you interview inspiring people, but YOU most definitely inspire people as well. Thank you.
I think Nick Gage is tremendously under appreciated. He has amazing talent and to hear him talk about his past so openly and embrace the lessons he learned from those experiences is awesome to hear. I have a deeper respect for him after watching this.
The only identity I knew of Gage before this podcast was that he's the man behind violent deathmatches and he's a tough badass.. but now I know a lot about the dude to really connect with him thanks to Chris for this amazing podcast 🙏

Been watching all kinds of wrestling since I was like 7-year-old kid, but since I was 14-year-old (2008) I started watching mostly hardcore wrestling. Hardcore wrestling is the most interesting for me to watch, even though I don't really like the ultraviolent light tube/panes of glass/gusset plate stuff.
