Hi Kate, I put all my scraps in a bucket. When the bucket is full, I dump all scraps into a pillowcase and sew it up and bring them to the animal shelter as crate pillows for comfort for the furry babes.
Thanks for giving this great idea. I'm a quilter and have a lot of scraps left over and some material I purchased years ago that I now wonder why. I'll make my own pillowcase(s), stuff it with the scraps, sew it shut and donate to the local animal shelter for the little furballs to enjoy. Thanks again!!!

Kate that is exactly what my mother did . She made mostly crochet knit sewn items But people that lived through the depression saved everything, made everything . My Mom was in a wheel chair She spent 25 Years there until she passed away. I was 9 and she taught me how to knit when I was 6. My first grade teacher nearly had a stroke when I wore my blue stockingette stitch sweater to school . I only wish my parents could have seen my custom tailoring store. I know she would have been Very surprised and proud of me. Thanks Kate for making me realize where all my Many talents came from. I haven't been able to go there in many years.

Ah! So satisfying to watch someone else create order from their chaos. Though, truth, it all makes complete sense as is to me. Things truly have their own lives...and are very useful. The minute you toss those material scraps, their use will come to light and haunt you forever! Wise to keep and repurpose ALMOST EVERYTHING.

First things get into a box, then they make it to the garage, then into the car, NOW out of my life. The sorting out and deciding what must go is the hardest part. The entire process has taken me over the winter. Sitting in the garage can take a few years sometimes.
someone once asked me how small a piece of Liberty fabric would have to be before i threw it away .... I replied ... you would need a microscope! ha ha!!! xxx
You mention at one point finding a purpose for scraps of fabric. Personally, I would absolutely love it if you created bundles of the scraps you didn't want and send away to those who would appreciate it. I am making a postage stamp quilt though, so perhaps I get a little excited when I see so many wonderful scraps of fabric!

Keep your tiny scraps. Make scrappy cushion covers, make up bags. Glasses pouches, book covers. I love little scraps, they are such fun for rainy days.
The gingham is great for jam pot lids etc, but for really small scraps I put them in a pillowcase, sew the end and it’s a lovely bed for cats or dogs, they can be washed in washing machine, dried on radiator then go in tumble dryer to fluff them up and distribute the scraps, the dogs home are always happy to have them for animals that have been starved and their bones are protruding and skin sore, it is a lovely soft bed to help support their poor limbs!

My husband is no longer allowed to organize my fabrics after gathering ALL interfacing & white felts & fleece into ONE oversized cardboard box. He also threw out the indentifying plastic wrappers on the various interfacings. We've been married for 30 years. It's a learning curve but he has his good points. 😘
Norma :) Fabric smaller than a fat quarter: 1) save strips for patchwork 2) cut squares in usable sizes 3) anything smaller save for stuffing or art collage for your local nursery school
The thin tea cosy is just a loose cover for a basic felted tea cosy ... So you would be able to wash and press the embroidery cover and interchange it. I found one with the felted inside that goes with it ..lin an auction lot . We've had a vintage antique outlet for about 14 years and have collected so many things that can't be sold but are precious because of their history or the personal significance that you know they've had in someone's life. I have especially loved 'rescuing' auction boxes of a woman's sewing history . You can almost feel the story of the family she had through the items . If we sell a sewing box , I've filled it with treasures so they can be loved again . So I totally understand how tricky it is to make decisions. 😤😤
Brilliant. I'm smiling from ear to ear having spent some time this summer making kusudama flowers for table decorations at youngest daughter's wedding as she suffers from hay fever.
Loved seeing more of your treasures, and can relate to the angst of deciding what to keep. Folks like us who keep a zillion bits & bobs are Optimists; we have such faith that everything has a use, and that's why we hold on to "stuff"!🤓🥰
Hi Kate. I work in the primary school, and I save all my tiny bits of scrap fabric and give them to reception class. The children love glueing them to paper or for junk modelling.
Anything less than 3x3 goes into pet beds to donate. Straps are saved for strip blocks. Less than half quarters are cut into 3x3, 5x5 or 10x10 squares. String blocks are cut to 6.5 squares. 3x3 are made into 9 squares...all for scrappy quilts.
How is it possible, I am mesmerized watching you sort through drawers. Ugg, a least favorite thing to do and I am in process for organization too. It is so hard for me to let loose of things, I might need. For 10 years and it hasn’t happened yet. 🤣❤️

It is fun to watch you go thru your tidying up and I definitely will need to order some of the goodies you will post for your yard sale. Yesterday was a day if errands , today I hoped to get the center sewed around the dog toy. Sorting and organizing my creative space I’ve come across lots of bits and pieces and for years I wanted to make a pretty journal with pretty bits of paper , fabric etc... The paper flowers are beautiful... you are such an inspiration.... and I thank you for helping me get thru this bitter cold and snow packed winter with creative indoor adventures ❣️ Many blessings 💫

Put all your little bits of fabric in folders then when you need some there they are,that's what a friend of mine dose. Absolutely love your videos and your talent is very interesting and in inspiring.x
We creative folks see potential in absolutely everything. No wonder we have drawers and bags and bins and barrels full of a huge miscellany of all things useful and otherwise. The world sees our stuff as odd bits and pieces, but we know there is something wonderful in there somewhere. So, we keep all the things as long as we have a spare corner. And it makes very good sense, too.
Kate...If you can bear to part with them you could sell grab bags of fabric on in your shop. Some day I will have some extra dollars to buy something :) I'd like a bag of mixed colors!
Scraps - I do separate into color families, so when I'm looking for something specific, I can find it more easily. Right now I am working on a crumb quilt, so I'm using up lots of odds and ends... I too have a bin or two of vintage linens, the embroidered ones for projects and the tablecloths and napkins for dyeing. Oh the curse of being a gatherer-and-a-keeper! ha
I've been keeping some velvet pieces from Belgium for 20 years and some damask squares. Scraps are wonderful. Color coordinated, little piles not folded but rolled. My sister-in-law will get a comfy pillow for Christmas. See, you aren't alone.

@@thelasthomelyhouse My mother was 18 years old when the Great Depression hit, so she came from the era of keeping things because there was no money to replace them later. She described it as, "All of a sudden, there was no money. Anywhere." I think I got the tendency to hang on to things from her... The young ones now don't keep anything, plus they all LOVE that mid-century modern furniture from the 50s and 60s, which has no drawers so they don't have a PLACE to keep anything anyway! ha I grew up with that stuff, chrome dinette sets with formica tops. Yuck. I love the old REAL wood furniture with beveled glass, that era. Furnishings with substance. But I do have more quilting fabric than I can ever use in my lifetime...
The little cover that you thought couldn’t be a tea cosy is exactly that. It would have had a padded liner that you could put inside the pretty cover. The cover could then be changed when you wanted a different one or it got grubby.
The tiny scraps of fabric can be used for crumb quilts for the homeless, just get together with a bunch of friends and their sewing machines and you’ll soon have some awesome quilts to donate and good memories of quality time together. Any bits too small for that can be used as stuffing for cat toys and beds as it’s all washable and they can also be donated to cats protection league or rspca xx
Kate, I use those tiny pieces for filling cushions for cats to lay on that are at the Humane Society. Made with all cotton, they are easy to wash with hot water to clean.
Hi Kate- I Cut my Little scraps into squares. From 5 inch Square down to 1 inch pieces, Cut Strips to 2.5 inch by width and use them in my scrappy quilts.
I keep every little piece of fabric, and I mean little. I make mug rugs and use tiny little pieces for applique work. Your scraps are a lot larger than mine...LOL! That's a toaster cover, I think! Oh my gosh you are so like me when it comes to de- stashing! Everything has a useful purpose, and all that! I would love one of those little hanging square banners in red... Dale from Canada.

I do love watching you go through your stuff! I think it reminds me of when I was little and my older sister would do this and I was fascinated. Sometimes she would pass some treasure along to me. Might I suggest grouping the fabric scraps by size instead of color? Then when you need a little piece, that's all you have to grab. Happy Birthday, by the way. I keep my scraps with plans to use somday😆. The tiny scraps and threads go into a bag and when I get enough. I make a cat or puppy bed/pillow 😃. Makes them happy too
String peiced quilts. That's what I do with mine. My most favourite way to use strips. Even the uglies look good. The 3inch squares look like sheeting or samples? And the gingham for chicken scratch. Thanks Kate. Ild better do some drawers as well.😇
I’m a huuuuge fan of scraps. I find it very hard to cut into big pieces of fabric (fat eights I can make myself do) so I basically only use scraps. I have them all folded and placed “spine” up in a very low container in color order so I can rifle through. It’s probably also the reason that I tend to make mini’s of about 7”x9”. I love doing abstract things and letting the scraps dictate the form. I’ve only just found your channel so I’m not sure if you ever sold any bundles but I’m always looking for ones with fun colors (I find browns very uninspiring). I’m really enjoying this cleaning series. The big sewing drawer was also amazing!
I discovered late in my life that I have a natural skill of organizing. I've changed several things, mostly in my kitchen to make it more efficient. One of my best ideas was to stack my meats in the freezer on end, like a row of books. In a side by side fridge, it really helps to see what is there. I also take my meats and flatten them on sheet pans to freeze, then bag in plastic. Best idea for keeping the freezer organized that I've come up with. Heavy weight cotton makes a nice table runner.. tote bag... stuffed animals, chair cushions... because it’s nice to have a heavier weight for these types of projects... maybe?
What do I do with my scraps of all sizes, largest to smallest? I use them all for various types of projects. I can always find a use for them. I would ALMOST rather have fabric scraps than fabric yardage - that's how much I love scraps. I do have a huge amount of them, so I wouldn't miss a small amount if they suddenly disappeared, but when faced with the choice "keep or toss?" it will ALWAYS be KEEP. I do like to share them with my other quilting friends too.

Finally the BALLS and now they’re a CliffHanger!! Lol. Small scraps: I keep all my smallish bits and strips (strings) in Space Bags and/or plastic covered totes. Love String Piecing - Sometimes I make Blocks and other times I create “new fabric” which I make into Totes, Purses, or Bags. I get all in a dither just thinking about a new string project! Don’t throw them out, Kate. Your bits are a new project just waiting to be born. Well the secrets out now ... see how easily I entertain myself?! Lol. The drawers were fun. TFS.

Keep all your tiny bits of scraps in the same place...the tiny bits of fabrics box. Just because you are cleaning out drawers and tidying up doesn't mean you have to suddenly get rid of all your scraps. There are loads of projects that can use those scraps!
It was so lovely to sort through drawers with you today. Your videos always make me smile and any reason to smile these two weeks is very welcome. At the moment we are in a deep freeze. Currently -2 F (-18 C) and windchills down to -35 degrees F (-37 C). Tomorrow is suppose to be colder with our high expected to be -13 F (-25 C) and windchills dipping down into the -60's F (-50's C). I am debating on making bread today, or candy. Do you make homemade bread? I would love to do a bake along with you sometime. Perhaps I will make your scones today. My husband gave me a jar of clotted cream that would go perfectly with scones and my homemade raspberry cherry jam. Have a beautiful day, Kate.
ChocolateRx Where are you that you are registering such temperatures!! I'm in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and not trying to do you one better, BUT, today we clocked in at -48C (with windchill) and are expected to see -60C tonight. It's not going to get better until at least the weekend. Wouldn't you know it, but I had to go shopping with a friend who is going to Puerta Vallarta at the end of the week. Grrrrrrrr!! I know it is colder up north and in places like Chicago, Wisconsin, Minnesota have it much worse than we do here in Iowa, but it is considerably colder than what we are accustomed to. If the temps are dropping here they probably are dropping more where you are. Stay safe! Stay warm! Hope your bread turns out.

I throw out any scraps smaller than say 2" sq, then I put them all into their colours, Ie blues, greens, reds etc and place each set of coloured scraps in their own little ( or big..) container and mark on the container "Blue scraps" etc....

Hello Kate. I have to tell you how much I've enjoyed watching you. I discovered your channel about a week ago and I can't get enough of you & your videos. It's almost like I've found my long lost friend. I find it so wonderful to hear your stories & to learn about your gardening & sewing & so many other things. I live in Florida but have just come back from visiting my Mother and family in Texas & they love cats. Chris hunt - I have a few of those tea cosies. They used to put them over the padded/quilted one then washed them. I found tray cloths to match. I too have bags full of that type of stuff!!
My beloved Mum in law and I had a deal, she was a bit of a collector and if she gave me anything I would dispose of it if I dident want it, or I'd find a home for it but we wouldent talk about it.
I inherited a tea cosy like that. I made a separate lining which I stuffed with polyfill. It works really well because I can wash the cover separately. Just an idea for you.
Those scraps are "large"! I make scrappy quilts and pillows out of the tiniest scrap that I can wrangle through a sewing machine! I absolutely hate to throw out a scrap of pretty little fabric. Send them to me ;-)

Kate, what I do with my scraps...I have bins with labels 1/2", 1", 2", 21/2" 3" then everything bigger than that goes into another bin. That way when I am working on a project that needs tiny pieces I know right where to go. I have started doing Iris paper piecing and just love it.
It gives me great comfort to know there is someone else out there that has a hard time getting rid of “seemingly useless” bits. We are so much alike!

The thin tea cosy is just a loose cover for a basic felted tea cosy ... So you would be able to wash and press the embroidery cover and interchange it. I found one with the felted inside that goes with it ..lin an auction lot .
We've had a vintage antique outlet for about 14 years and have collected so many things that can't be sold but are precious because of their history or the personal significance that you know they've had in someone's life. I have especially loved 'rescuing' auction boxes of a woman's sewing history . You can almost feel the story of the family she had through the items . If we sell a sewing box , I've filled it with treasures so they can be loved again .
So I totally understand how tricky it is to make decisions. 😤😤

Hi Kate. I work in the primary school, and I save all my tiny bits of scrap fabric and give them to reception class. The children love glueing them to paper or for junk modelling.
Anything less than 3x3 goes into pet beds to donate. Straps are saved for strip blocks. Less than half quarters are cut into 3x3, 5x5 or 10x10 squares. String blocks are cut to 6.5 squares. 3x3 are made into 9 squares...all for scrappy quilts.
How is it possible, I am mesmerized watching you sort through drawers. Ugg, a least favorite thing to do and I am in process for organization too. It is so hard for me to let loose of things, I might need. For 10 years and it hasn’t happened yet. 🤣❤️

Yesterday was a day if errands , today I hoped to get the center sewed around the dog toy. Sorting and organizing my creative space I’ve come across lots of bits and pieces and for years I wanted to make a pretty journal with pretty bits of paper , fabric etc...

Put all your little bits of fabric in folders then when you need some there they are,that's what a friend of mine dose. Absolutely love your videos and your talent is very interesting and in inspiring.x
We creative folks see potential in absolutely everything. No wonder we have drawers and bags and bins and barrels full of a huge miscellany of all things useful and otherwise. The world sees our stuff as odd bits and pieces, but we know there is something wonderful in there somewhere. So, we keep all the things as long as we have a spare corner. And it makes very good sense, too.
Kate...If you can bear to part with them you could sell grab bags of fabric on in your shop. Some day I will have some extra dollars to buy something :) I'd like a bag of mixed colors!

Sew them together to create bigger blocks. It's very satisfying because you don't have to be precise.
Scraps - I do separate into color families, so when I'm looking for something specific, I can find it more easily. Right now I am working on a crumb quilt, so I'm using up lots of odds and ends... I too have a bin or two of vintage linens, the embroidered ones for projects and the tablecloths and napkins for dyeing. Oh the curse of being a gatherer-and-a-keeper! ha
I've been keeping some velvet pieces from Belgium for 20 years and some damask squares. Scraps are wonderful. Color coordinated, little piles not folded but rolled. My sister-in-law will get a comfy pillow for Christmas. See, you aren't alone.

@@thelasthomelyhouse My mother was 18 years old when the Great Depression hit, so she came from the era of keeping things because there was no money to replace them later. She described it as, "All of a sudden, there was no money. Anywhere." I think I got the tendency to hang on to things from her... The young ones now don't keep anything, plus they all LOVE that mid-century modern furniture from the 50s and 60s, which has no drawers so they don't have a PLACE to keep anything anyway! ha I grew up with that stuff, chrome dinette sets with formica tops. Yuck. I love the old REAL wood furniture with beveled glass, that era. Furnishings with substance. But I do have more quilting fabric than I can ever use in my lifetime...
The little cover that you thought couldn’t be a tea cosy is exactly that. It would have had a padded liner that you could put inside the pretty cover. The cover could then be changed when you wanted a different one or it got grubby.
The tiny scraps of fabric can be used for crumb quilts for the homeless, just get together with a bunch of friends and their sewing machines and you’ll soon have some awesome quilts to donate and good memories of quality time together. Any bits too small for that can be used as stuffing for cat toys and beds as it’s all washable and they can also be donated to cats protection league or rspca xx

Kate, I use those tiny pieces for filling cushions for cats to lay on that are at the Humane Society. Made with all cotton, they are easy to wash with hot water to clean.
Hi Kate- I Cut my Little scraps into squares. From 5 inch Square down to 1 inch pieces, Cut Strips to 2.5 inch by width and use them in my scrappy quilts.
I keep every little piece of fabric, and I mean little. I make mug rugs and use tiny little pieces for applique work. Your scraps are a lot larger than mine...LOL! That's a toaster cover, I think! Oh my gosh you are so like me when it comes to de- stashing! Everything has a useful purpose, and all that! I would love one of those little hanging square banners in red...

I do love watching you go through your stuff! I think it reminds me of when I was little and my older sister would do this and I was fascinated. Sometimes she would pass some treasure along to me. Might I suggest grouping the fabric scraps by size instead of color? Then when you need a little piece, that's all you have to grab. Happy Birthday, by the way. I keep my scraps with plans to use somday😆. The tiny scraps and threads go into a bag and when I get enough. I make a cat or puppy bed/pillow 😃. Makes them happy too

String peiced quilts. That's what I do with mine. My most favourite way to use strips. Even the uglies look good. The 3inch squares look like sheeting or samples? And the gingham for chicken scratch. Thanks Kate. Ild better do some drawers as well.😇
I’m a huuuuge fan of scraps. I find it very hard to cut into big pieces of fabric (fat eights I can make myself do) so I basically only use scraps. I have them all folded and placed “spine” up in a very low container in color order so I can rifle through.
It’s probably also the reason that I tend to make mini’s of about 7”x9”. I love doing abstract things and letting the scraps dictate the form.
I’ve only just found your channel so I’m not sure if you ever sold any bundles but I’m always looking for ones with fun colors (I find browns very uninspiring). I’m really enjoying this cleaning series. The big sewing drawer was also amazing!

I discovered late in my life that I have a natural skill of organizing. I've changed several things, mostly in my kitchen to make it more efficient. One of my best ideas was to stack my meats in the freezer on end, like a row of books. In a side by side fridge, it really helps to see what is there. I also take my meats and flatten them on sheet pans to freeze, then bag in plastic. Best idea for keeping the freezer organized that I've come up with. Heavy weight cotton makes a nice table runner.. tote bag... stuffed animals, chair cushions... because it’s nice to have a heavier weight for these types of projects... maybe?
What do I do with my scraps of all sizes, largest to smallest? I use them all for various types of projects. I can always find a use for them. I would ALMOST rather have fabric scraps than fabric yardage - that's how much I love scraps. I do have a huge amount of them, so I wouldn't miss a small amount if they suddenly disappeared, but when faced with the choice "keep or toss?" it will ALWAYS be KEEP. I do like to share them with my other quilting friends too.

Small scraps: I keep all my smallish bits and strips (strings) in Space Bags and/or plastic covered totes. Love String Piecing - Sometimes I make Blocks and other times I create “new fabric” which I make into Totes, Purses, or Bags. I get all in a dither just thinking about a new string project! Don’t throw them out, Kate. Your bits are a new project just waiting to be born. Well the secrets out now ... see how easily I entertain myself?! Lol. The drawers were fun. TFS.

Keep all your tiny bits of scraps in the same place...the tiny bits of fabrics box. Just because you are cleaning out drawers and tidying up doesn't mean you have to suddenly get rid of all your scraps. There are loads of projects that can use those scraps!
It was so lovely to sort through drawers with you today. Your videos always make me smile and any reason to smile these two weeks is very welcome. At the moment we are in a deep freeze. Currently -2 F (-18 C) and windchills down to -35 degrees F (-37 C). Tomorrow is suppose to be colder with our high expected to be -13 F (-25 C) and windchills dipping down into the -60's F (-50's C). I am debating on making bread today, or candy. Do you make homemade bread? I would love to do a bake along with you sometime. Perhaps I will make your scones today. My husband gave me a jar of clotted cream that would go perfectly with scones and my homemade raspberry cherry jam.

ChocolateRx Where are you that you are registering such temperatures!! I'm in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and not trying to do you one better, BUT, today we clocked in at -48C (with windchill) and are expected to see -60C tonight. It's not going to get better until at least the weekend. Wouldn't you know it, but I had to go shopping with a friend who is going to Puerta Vallarta at the end of the week. Grrrrrrrr!! I know it is colder up north and in places like Chicago, Wisconsin, Minnesota have it much worse than we do here in Iowa, but it is considerably colder than what we are accustomed to. If the temps are dropping here they probably are dropping more where you are. Stay safe! Stay warm! Hope your bread turns out.

I throw out any scraps smaller than say 2" sq, then I put them all into their colours, Ie blues, greens, reds etc and place each set of coloured scraps in their own little ( or big..) container and mark on the container "Blue scraps" etc....

Chris hunt - I have a few of those tea cosies. They used to put them over the padded/quilted one then washed them. I found tray cloths to match. I too have bags full of that type of stuff!!

String piecing. Then you cut your block and save it, until you have enough to make a quilt. That's what I did.

My beloved Mum in law and I had a deal, she was a bit of a collector and if she gave me anything I would dispose of it if I dident want it, or I'd find a home for it but we wouldent talk about it.
I inherited a tea cosy like that. I made a separate lining which I stuffed with polyfill. It works really well because I can wash the cover separately. Just an idea for you.

Those scraps are "large"! I make scrappy quilts and pillows out of the tiniest scrap that I can wrangle through a sewing machine! I absolutely hate to throw out a scrap of pretty little fabric. Send them to me ;-)

I have bags of unbelievably uselessly tiny scraps. I want to someday make a floor cushion and I am sure I can stuff it( full ) of these bits of fabrics.
I put them in a plastic tote and save them all. For all the things for future UA-cam classes put them in a box labeled UA-cam.

I loved the velcro monster. BTW - I cut my scraps into 2", 2.5", 3.5".....5" squares and and strips and store them in clear shoebox size containers.

I sew small pieces of fabric together and make another fabric to make a bag or cushion cover they are invaluable, don't through them away.
It is best to wear a good blindfold any time you sort as otherwise it may end up with more than you start with. Been there, done that.

Kate, what I do with my scraps...I have bins with labels 1/2", 1", 2", 21/2" 3" then everything bigger than that goes into another bin. That way when I am working on a project that needs tiny pieces I know right where to go. I have started doing Iris paper piecing and just love it.
