The Slab boys linked up with ADub Fishing on the New River (ironically the oldest river in the Western Hemisphere) to chase HUGE smallmouth bass. The New River holds many fishing secrets that few have experienced, and smallmouth fishing in the New River is certainly one of them (plus topwater smallmouth!). The boys set out on a huge float, fishing the New River down a several mile stretch of some of the best Virginia and West Virginia fishing. New River fishing is something we will do again in the near future, especially for another huge smallmouth or for some epic musky fishing.

Cool vid, eventually I'll get down there to hit the New River.
I fish that river close to where yall are all spring until winter every year. You wouldn't believe along with the smallmouth how many flat head catfish are in there. One late summer evening after a heavy rain I was using a gulp minnow trying to get a big bronze back to come play with me , I bet I caught 6 flat head on that gulp minnow slow jigging on the bottom bouncing it. Channel catfishing I catch 3 or 4 flats to every 1 channel I catch before July. After July when they are fully spawned out which I thought was in May but apparently been later in the summer lately. But you can't beat the 2-8 lbs flat heads off your line using night crawlers or creek chubs. I've yet to ever catch a musky in my life but I've had a cpl on. And idk if it's just the area I I fish on the new or what but I haven't caught the first walleye in that stretch. In fact it's always on to the Kanawha river or up closer to bluestone lake before I ever catch a walleye
This far south you can have a chance to catch a smallmouth that big! bro I don't know if you know but the world record smallie comes futher south than you are now and all the 10lbr's ever caught on record are all futher south than where you are right now. I live on the TN/VA line so I fish both sides equally Iv caught some 6's but Iv scene a few 7 or 8's swimming around. What you have to realize is to catch a fish that big you have to almost hunt them over the course of time and catch him slippin, if they make it that big most likely they are 20 years old or older very wise fish. Great video.
Can you share the launch spot or the town, at least? Videography is really good to watch for a change some people put some really jumpy stuff. The trip looked amazing.

Dude, the Upper James used to be dang near as good as the New. When I was at VT I fished both of them as often as possible. The James fish died off and it's never bounced back all the way :(.
Going to VT next year and super stoked to get fish these rivers. Caught 18 today in PA On a kayak float.
How far of a drive is the new river from VT 25 min?
@@thomasmolenda1673 Yeah, roughly. Lots of VT folks go tubing down around McCoy Falls, and wet wading is pretty good there during the summer months. I've not been there in years but I used to catch good numbers of fish with an occasional 2 to 3 pounder in that area. You can float from there to Eggleston or Pembroke. Then there's access at Ripplemead and Bluff City. Ripplemead to Bluff City is on of my favorite floats. Get a good life jacket and be careful, the New River can be very deceiving and dangerous. Honestly I used do to well putting in under the I-81 Bridge and Floating down to Radford or the Pepper's Ferry Bridge - there's a lot of muskies on this section. I found some old retired lady who'd shuttle my vehicles for floats for 20 bucks (in late 90s/early 2000s), I know you could find someone to do it. Sadly, the Upper James probably isn't worth driving to now but it used to be unmatched for numbers of fish.
