    Thank you for the great review of reverse grad filter especially in combination with traditional grads. I am an aspiring landscape photographer who uses it as a form of meditation and your comments about seeing the scene come together in the viewfinder spoke to my soul. I am less enthusiastic about hdr stacks and photoshop usage and appreciate the insight your video gave. Many props. Thank you.

      Glad you enjoyed the review and the approach David. I do use Photoshop and Lightroom for exposure blending as well.It all depends on the scene and what I think will work the best but, when possible, doing a single exposure in camera is definitely satisfying. Great overview Ralph. I do use a 3 stop reverse ND but not as much as I intended when I bought it. More useful on seascapes with a flat horizon rather than anywhere else for me. I find bracketing and blending to my content easier than using the reverse ND. At least I have more information captured and I use it as I see fit for each photo. They also have another limitation when the sunlight is reflected quire aggressively in the water. It is very difficult to control this issue, unless I shoot with the sun really low in the horizon. But when it works it is great fun.

      Glad you enjoyed it Thanos. Yes, I agree there are some limitations and situations when grads in general are not the best option. I do like using them sometimes however and it is normally with seascapes. Thank you for watching and commenting

    Hi Ralph - great video- I have carried grad ND’s since back in the film days (mine are ancient Sing-Rays and yes I have a Daryl Benson reverse grad). Indispensable piece of gear in my book. They weren’t as easy to use in the film days as you could not really see their effect as well as you can on a digital camera (or obviously as quickly) but they saved the day more than once!!

    Watched this with great interest Ralph. Been watching videos regarding what grad for what, just ordered a Benro reverse ND Grad on Ebay yesterday. Thank you for sharing and take care.

    Superb video Ralph and thank you, I never thought to stack a reverse and normal grad (don't ask me why - mental block I suppose). I'll break it out at the next opportunity , I'm sure it will aid me no end. Cheers 🙏🙏🙏

    Never heard of a reverse ND filter, so interesting to know. I never use ND filters but enjoyed the video and love how they store the ND filter without getting finger prints over the filter. Many thanks for sharing the info Ralph :)

    Hey Ralph, not a fan of filters myself, but I do tend to use a full ND filter when I want to increase the exposure time, whether it be when the scene is too dark, or I want to create an affect on the clouds or water etc, but I understand when you like using them, a great final image, and a nice review!
    Hope you are having a nice weeekdn, we have storms up here.

    Great video indeed Ralph. It would be interesting to see whether at the end you'd be able to get the same, better (or worse) outcomes when you rely purely on post processing with Lightroom (or with exposure bracketing but that may be a little difficult with waves rolling in etc ). I assume it depends a little on the camera one is using (dynamic range) and LR skills. Anyway, something to think about..... I just ordered a Tokina 11-16mm lens for land/seascape so these kind of videos are very helpful!!

    • @RalphGoldsmith
      @RalphGoldsmith  2 роки тому

      Glad you found it interesting Andy. Whether using grads or exposure blending I could probably get the same result. When exposure blending and trying to catch waves I tend to shoot a sequence of wave image and then re-expose for the sky, take a shot, and then go back to the waves. By repeating this sequence I always have a shot of the sky that will work with the wave shot of my choice. Thank you for watching and commenting

    Hi Ralph. If you had to buy one, would you prefer a 3 or 4 stop? I’m trying to decide thank you!

    • @RalphGoldsmith
      @RalphGoldsmith  Рік тому +1

      Personally I would choose a 3 stop in this type of filter. I find 4 stops a bit to heavy more my taste in most conditions and, on the rare occasion I need more I have options to maybe stack it with a normal 2 or 3 stop if conditions require it, Hope that helps. Thank you for watching and commenting Gary

      @@RalphGoldsmith ok thanks, Ralph! I have the opportunity to save quite a bit of money on a 4 stop, but perhaps it would limit me too much or be hard to work with. I’ll stick with a 3 stop. Thank you!

    • @RalphGoldsmith
      @RalphGoldsmith  Рік тому +1

      @@gary_michael_flanagan_wildlife You're welcome. If the 4 stop is a much better deal then I'm sure you can work with it.

      @@RalphGoldsmith thanks. It was about $80 USD so hopefully I can work with it. I usually find myself trying to stack two filters as they never seem to darken the sky enough, but it could be my error. I am a bird and action photographer mostly so landscapes is new territory. I love the Lee system though. It works well. Thanks friend
