    SHOW NOTES
Welcome to Talk Heathen! This week our hosts are Sydney Davis Jr. Jr. and ObjectivelyDan.
Jack in FL is an atheist and thinks our Talk Heathen To Me segment disrespects religion and may hinder someone's deconversion from theism. That's a valid concern. Some use humor others find vulgar to process their trauma and these comments come from our audience. We appreciate the feedback and will look into it.
Howard in NY wonders how atheists can be against the death penalty for murder, given the belief that this life is all we have, when other animal species eliminate killers. Humans have empathy and we can process nuance when it comes to murder. Killing someone for killing someone else won't help anything. Murderers should be punished, but death may not be the most humane way to get that justice.
Brett in MO claims the New Testament is a good guide for morality and atheism is just a subjective morality. Brett goes on to say secular morality is just nihilistic. There are different forms of secular morality and even if proven wrong, the New Testament doesn’t just get a pass when it advocates slavery.
Andrew in FL claims Jesus was the MLK of his time. Evidenced by Jesus' peaceful but revolutionary ideals. If these stories of Jesus were just fables that people learned from, there can be good there. We can’t give credit to what is essentially a cult leader. You can’t separate all the biblical baggage from Jesus’ teachings and just credit the good stuff.
Sam from Canada is an ex-Muslim and finds it kind of sinister that they teach young children enough Arabic to read the Quran but not really to understand what it means. He spent years learning Arabic but can speak it and read it aloud in class where the teacher just translates what it means. That is a good point to bring up given the prophet was famously illiterate. You don’t really find that in Christianity
Ash in IL is struggling with her beliefs about life after death after the death of a friend. There are many different views on afterlifes under the atheist umbrella. Sydney recounts her views, people cease to exist but live on through memories.
Thanks for tuning in! This week's Talk Heathen To Me prompt is: Why Are People REALLY Leaving The Church? Comment on this video and the top 3 will be read live on air next week!

I appreciated the first caller’s respectful critique on atheist humor, but here’s my perspective… yes, he makes a point that it could turn some people away. However, being reverent of religion could also turn other people away. I came to TH because I was questioning my religion and was curious what a life w/o God/Jesus would even look like. I was a little shocked but also amazed that the hosts could make jokes and not be FEARFUL of the consequences. It was appealing and made me stick around.

    • @terryhinch
      @terryhinch 3 місяці тому +1

Is it disrespectful? Yes. But what has religion or Christianity done to earn our respect? Many of us come from backgrounds where blind reverence to religion has actively harmed and traumatized us.
So if someone is more "turned off" by a bad joke about Jesus than they are about the number of CSAs covered up by the multitude of churches, I don't care if they don't want to hang out with me.
It's the kind of tone and respectability policing that keeps popping up in pride events. Like if we act good for the straights, maybe they will grudgingly not hate us. That's a them problem not an us problem.

25:27 While you do have to play 'shock-jock' game a little bit, I have to say I respect you guys a lot for not resorting to clickbait titles.
Any clips or calls you post on their own are (as far as I remember) always titled as a simple summary of the content of that call. Without naming names, there's plenty of atheist channels out there with videos named "Christian talks himself in circles" or "Deluded theist thinks his nephew was *miraculously* cured", etc.
So I guess to soothe ObjectivelyDan's worries - I think you guys are striking a damn near perfect balance between respect and ridicule.
I hope to be in a position soon where I can join your Patreon to support you more, keep up the great work! ❤

I love how Sydney equated death to going under anesthesia. It was my experience as well, you nod off then suddenly you are awake (although groggy) with no sensation of a passage of time. You aren’t waiting around in a black void going “are they done yet?”
My personal unscientific opinion is that we sense the passage of time based on the changes of our sensory input. Anesthesia blocks your senses from communicating with your brain, so once you die and your brain is no longer processing that sensory data, the universe ends (for you) and you along with it.

I do not care if people are offended lol. If someone tells me they are religious I try to be respectful of the person in general, but I don't care if someone is offended overall about me making a comment about a god or gods. It's silly. You can respect a person and not respect an idea.

They’re not Pro-life… they’re Pro-Fetus.. which gives the UNBORN more rights than ANY citizen and more than even its mother (or both its mother and father and anyone else!)…. but ONLY until it’s born. After that, it’s “f-k you” and it’s the mother’s responsibility (however unfit or unprepared she is) all the while cutting any support to her to raise the child… and ensuring they also cut funding to education, daycare, social programs, health care, second degree education, job training, economic assistance and education, etc… that is if they make it OUT of the school system as now there is a 1/300 chance of there being a school shooting and 1 in 5 chance that they will even graduate. This is the legacy of the “pro-life” movement. Again, they’re really Pro-Fetus because it costs them NOTHING to be so, and pushes everything on the mother…. For the rest of her life.

    Ash,
I'm sorry for your loss. It's tough losing friends, and there's no real comfort except to cherish the people in your life as much as possible.
As for "Energy cannot be created or destroyed", that's true.
But sources of energy CAN be destroyed.
For example, if I have a fully charged battery in my hand, and I plug that into a device that runs on batteries, the energy in that battery can power the device.
But if I take that battery out and smash it with a hammer, that electrical energy might still infuse the chemicals that spilled out when I smash it, but that battery is no longer a useful container full of energy.
The same thing happens to humans who die, or any other living thing that dies.
Whatever energy we have comes from eating food and converting the nutrients into energy.
When our body dies, those functions cease and we no long produce that energy.
We're not destroying the energy; we're simply not making anymore.
As for the concept of a soul, that is not only unproven with every attempt to detect a soul failing in every way, it's also been proven not to exist, as much as anything can be disproven.
It is a lovely idea that we have a magical soul and when we die our magical soul goes to some magical place and we reunite with other magical souls and live happily ever after in a magical afterlife.
Unfortunately, the reality is that every shred of evidence that has ever been provided on the issue of whether we have a soul or not is always on the "not" side of the issue.
    This is not comforting.
    This is not lovely.
    But this is reality.
And it makes me cherish every moment of my life, and every person I share it with, so much more because this is, in reality, all I have.

55:28 Odd that Brett appeals to Matthew 7:12 (the golden rule): "So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you." This instruction from Jesus is an exemplar of subjective morality and is presented in Matthew as a core message of the gospels: "For this sums up the Law and the Prophets."
The golden rule is not a rule in the normal sense of the word. It's a guiding principle, directing us through a procedure of self-reflection to formulate our own appropriate moral actions. It is intrinsically stance-dependent, i.e., subjective. Does that make Jesus a nihilist, Brett?

A bit on DNS after a quick comment on jokes. As far as jokes go I like the ones that can be shared by many. From another show I forget which. "Why did God make humans"... "To see how many times we will all into a room and forget why we were there."
For those that don't know a lot about DNA. Most DNA is in 23 pairs of chromosomes (46 total) in the nucleus of most cells. There is also a small set of mDNA or mitochondrial in the cytoplasm. In human eggs there is the mother's mDNA plus one of each of the 23 pairs (one half of most cells). In the sperm there are one 23 of the 23 pairs, but no mDNA (one half of most cells again) We only get mDNA from our maternal line as the egg has cytoplasm . The majority is a split from each parent. (yes there are technically exceptions but just going over typical here). The 23 chromosome pair is the one that determines biological sex. XY for male and XX for female (Though not always expressed outwardly). It is the fathers sperm that determines if the child is male or female. If he passes his X chromosome whichever he got from his mother from his mother the child will be female. Likewise if he passes the Y chromosome from his father the child will be male.
So by the time you get to grandchildren.... All children will have the mDNA of their maternal grandmother. Boys will have their paternal grandfather's Y chromosome . Girls will have one of their paternal grandmother's X chromosome (the other from one of their mothers). In the roughly 4 billion base pairs in chrismal DNA there is around 5 to 10 changes per generation. So there is a small change, but you can say typically the DNA is the same. So, how does the rest of the 22 pairs show in grandchildren otherwise? Think of a deal of cards. The father gets Spades from his father and Hearts from his mother. The mother gets Clubs from her father and Diamonds from her mother. A child could get all the Spades from their father and all Clubs from their mother. But this is highly unlikely. More likely you are going to get a good mix. Half will be from one set of grandparents and Half from the other, But from the father side the 22 (ignoring the XY) could be 3 from grandfather and 19 from grandmother or vice versa. Same on mother's side. So think about the cards again 22 will be either Spade (paternal grandfather) or Heart (paternal grandmother) and 22 will be Club (maternal grandfather) or Diamond (maternal grandmother).

Expressing blasphemy can be so therapeutically freeing after living under a regime of spiritual oppression.

Andrew's a Taoist, now? He used to be a Catholic, bemoaning the doctrine of indissolubility of marriage (translation he has buyer's remorse re: his wife and children) and how he only stuck around because of it. Does this mean he got a divorce? (I'm pretty sure Christy summarized one of his calls as, "I hate my life. I hate my job. And that's good.")

Oh that was Brett Keane, wasn't it? If so, I think his most admirable work has been to oppose Kent Hovind's criminal compound publicly.

I give him no points for that. He only did that because Hovind wasn't giving him enough attention anymore.

Howard, you are delusional if you believe that every atheist is against the death penalty.

Andrew: Jesus was a product of his time. Huh? I thought he was god. If he wasn’t god, we are not talking about Christianity. we’re just talking about about a rando guy from a long time again.

I’m fine with the idea that a religion which doesn’t say Jesus is literally God can still be Christianity. Who are we as atheists to decide what “true” Christianity is? It’s not like the Bible is coherent and intelligible.

Maybe Jack is a Christian. It wouldn't be the first time I have heard a Christian say dishonest things to support their narrative and trying to put down atheists talking points.

Y'all seem to have difficulty in answering calls like Howard's when they make generalizations, and it puzzles me, since I've watched Dan do so much better in the past on this show and AXP. A simple point is that I think many atheists are secular humanists. That's all the explanation needed to offer why they would be against the death penalty. Above all, however is this: there is nothing in life that is 100% uniformly across the board. No group is entirely in favor or or against any issue, belief or whatever.

Objectively Dan, don’t say that! Don’t say that you are doing what you’re doing only for the money. It sounded like you called yourself a sellout. „I don’t want to do this but it’s what beings money”. That’s what it sounded. No!

In the mid-90s I was in a punkish death metal band with a couple friends. We were trying to be as offensive as possible and even get arrested for it (NWA was still in our minds). We had a reference to stigmata masturbation in a song. Also bestiality in the name of Muhammed.
