Hi Jeppy, thanks for making this video. I replaced my bearings today, but I used a slightly different method, but still using the flat bar and bolts. My two bolts threaded into the bearing cap. I then continued to tighten both bolts fully, until I could see the axle moving towards the gearbox, it will only move about 5mm. Then I backed off the bolts 12mm, then pulled on the axle and the bearing, the gap enabled me to insert a gear puller, the bearing came loose and I’m a happy boy. Maybe try this next time! I put wire from the hole on the end of the axle to the screw hole to keep the axle from coming out

Thanks Jeppyc. Got my 62 bug on jack stands last few days. Had what I thought was a leaky slave turn out to be a torn paper washer. Kit is ordered on the way but I cannot find a diagram anywhere to show what is supposed to be there. For example, I have seen some videos guys replacing seals remove a washer over the bearing, mine is absent. There was a large skinny o ring intact that Im sure comes in the kit, hopefully washer does too. Then it looks like previous owner had both paper gaskets together, which struck me as odd. Seemed better if there was one on each side of the plate?? Anyways if you got any info throw fellow vw enthusiast I would greatly appreciate it. As much as I curse working on it, I am glad when it is done, so I can get back to driving it.
The way you make it a bit easier is cut a couple grooves on the bearing and pull with screwdrivers.Or push you axle shaft all the way in and the bearing comes out easy. ITS A LOOSE FIT ANYWAYS .Happy Motoring !

Your boots are installed wrong. Seam should be at 9 O'clock facing the rear. With sealant. There is no bellows in the seam and they will tear if installed with the seam on top. The axles will not come out without removing the side plates. VW owners manual.
i dont think you CAN pul out the axle, its locked in with a big circlip, isnt it?
I was thinking the same thing. The Axel is locked in with a giant C clip but I supposed with enough force you could get the axel wedged in the clip enough to where the fulcums get out of position.

@@brianchisnell1548 if ya dont have anything useful to add, just bugger off.of course ive got a book, books, videos, had this car and several motorcycles completely apart and successfully back together except for THIS particular assembly-AND have had several different suggestions as to how to go forward, gathering CONSENSUS from experienced people that can articulate on the matter without snark.your 'help' isnt needed.
The side plates don't hold the axle in place. 2 fulcrum plates hold the axle flange into the hub gear that is "locked" in place with a retaining washer and a spring clip. Also, I think this method of bearing removal is less about pushing the axle into the transaxle but potentially pulling the bearing housing off of the axle tube which in turn pulls the bearing off the axle. The bearing housing and axle tube are pressed together (that's how 1 piece axle boots were installed from the factory). This method may separate the two enough to break the bearing free and the spring plate is keeping them from sliding off any further. It could lead to some leaks in the future if not reseated completely but if it worked it worked just might not be the most preferred method. Personally I would prefer to put the pulling force on the already damaged bearing instead of the undamaged bits of the axle and transaxle.
