Andrew, you are giving a sence that you skip calibration because you have some pride calibrating manually. I think that is wrong, and you are way to biased in that regard. You really should try and give Dirac a real chance, and use it for a couple of weeks or even up to a month. I'm sure, when you go back to none calibration mode, you will think, how the heck could you live without! Switching between calibartion modes quickly is not a good way to judge anything.
Dirac Bass Control and ART is coming later this year, and it will accelerate away from your beloved SONY even further. Great review!

I bought the Cinema 50 a few weeks ago - a little nervously as I had been waiting for this review of the Cinema 40 and didn’t want to feel I was missing out. No regrets at all, and I didn’t need to purchase Dirac. It’s only a 5.0 surround system and Audyssey worked wonders.

I bought the Cinema 40 and like it very much. I'm still using a power amplifier via pre-out to an Emotiva XPA-200 gen 1 powering a pair of Kef R3 fronts and matching R series center channel. Using LS50s as surround speakers. I have the Kef R3s sitting on top of the SVS SB3000 subs using iso stands. The sub is tuned using Cinema manual setup and tuning. Sounds excellently blended and the optional directional L and R low frequency signals make it a great stereo experience. I'm using 80hz crossover to the subs. I could probably use 60hz crossover but I like SVS sub being more involved in the frequency curve.

Ooooo idea for another video…”Home Theater Lingo” in other words, what do enthusiasts mean by words like “bright, weight, warm, depth, range, full etc.” That could be fun and add to our knowledge a bit…

    • @marvinmurakami8828
      @marvinmurakami8828 Рік тому +37

A bright sound usually means the highs overwhelm the rest of the sound. A warm sound usually means the highs are not as prominent. Weight and full usually means the sound has a lot of punch or force behind it. Depth usually refers to the midrange where the singer and instruments are in their proper space from front to rear. For instance, a forward sounding midrange will make a singer sound closer to you than the recording engineer intended. Imaging refers to a singer and instruments belonging in their proper space from left to right. For instance a singer should sound like they're lright in the middle between the speakers, in a good system, if you concentrate on the singer the left and right speaker will appear like they're not even playing. In a great live recording, you may hear the singer's voice move left or right as they move across the stage.
Range usually refers to the ability to accurately reproduce sound from the lowest lows to the highest highs.
      Hope this helps.

@@michael-4k4000 pro calibration uses a machine that is highly sensitive to light and color, coupled with a computer to read the results and help you to calibrate to a baseline.
E.g. what is red? I could show you thousands of variations that you would call "red", but there is a pure baseline 'red' when we talk about calibration. Like music, movie and film are calibrated to a specific color balance, specific white balance. They use calibrated equipment so the baseline is standardized and so when we say that hat should be red, we know specifically what we're referencing

I think the Cinema 70 and 50 are the best options for most people. The 70 has as many channels as the 60 but less power. But with the money saved, you can buy a multi-channel power amplifier and still get to roughly the same price as the 60. Also, it's form factor is more approachable and will fit into more cabinets. Increasingly, a lot of TV stands that aren't purpose built home theatre media consoles don't fit these larger receivers. Or just upgrade straight to the Cinema 50 and get more channels as well. The 40 is quite a bit more expensive than the 50 without offering too much more.

I went with the Denon x4800h which is similar to the Cinema 40. I got it for Dirac which was able to bring some depth back to my speakers that I need to have on semi enclosed shelves (compromises). Huge improvement over no eq and Audyssey no matter how much I tweaked it. Sony 7000 interested me but early buyers were finding software bugs though it had a false start where some retailers were selling it before others. So maybe it just wasn't ready yet. Happy with the Denon though!

Interesting that you prefer the sound without Dirac. I found that a few days listening to my front floorstanders and careful positioning to optimize 2 channel listening, then moving on to the entire multichannel setup and then running correction - it was the cherry on top to reach AUDIO ECSTASY.

How does it compare to the 8015 which was reviewed a little over a year ago? Looks and Dirac aside, the big difference is the lack of a toroidal which puts the Cinema 40 closer to a 7000 series.

Wow, I was sort of afraid to admit that I prefer my Marantz 60 without room correction or general EQ. Something just starts to sound off as soon as I add any adjustments and I gave Audyssey a real honest try again here. I just set the distances, crossovers, and then levels by ear. I feel dirty, but it sounds better, what can I say? I kept toggling back and forth scratching my head.

Once I had Dirac and REW I never want to go back. There is a great video on UA-cam where the Audessy team admits on the Denon channel where the room correction often drops lots of corrections because the real-time processor can’t process them all. As server specialist for over 30 years specializing in real-time global non-stop systems it saddens me to hear that the systems are under specked and I’m not surprised to see Denon Marantz move to Dirac.
But the future is Dirac Art if it eventuates. It’s room correction solution is a game changer. And Art will need sone serious processing. It’s in the Storm Audio. Check it out. Dirac Art.

Living in Europe, my assessment of the Cinema 40, which I've owned for a couple of months, is different as it is priced here only slightly above the Denon 4800 and significantly below the RZ70 (or the Integra DRH 8.4 which retails at almost twice the street price of the Marantz). For 2000-2500€, the Cinema 40/Denon 4800 feature set compares favorably with anything in its price range (Even including the promised full Dirac DLBC, it is cheaper than the Onkyo RZ70 which offers 2 extra channels of amplification, but has only 2 sub outputs).
Switching from a much older silver Rotel (RSX1055), I'm not impressed by the built quality or the look of my silver Cinema 40, but I have no complaint over the feature set (including an informative display which is a good substitute for the Marantz app when not using a projector/TV, the 3 assignable triggers and amplifiers, the GUI and the web interface)... I wish it had XLR outs for the front channels and subs, but that's about it... There are also a few software bugs, but it seems all current brands suffer from similar or worse issues.

With the exception of the HDAMs, I think the 40 and 4800h are identical except in price and someone was saying the 4800h is the better buy given the fact that it's a grand cheaper. Look at the images from the top. It makes sense because they just have to manufacture 1 unit with a different board.
However, some folks are picking up the 7015 for $1,500 in Europe which is technically a Cinema 40 with fewer subs, 1 HDMI 2.1 port and no support for Dirac (but eArc is there) and the old fascia for less than a Cinema 60...

    • @netster

@@techsamurai11 You’re right about the HDAM. The X4800H is based on the older X4700H design, but it has a new internal amplifier design.
The SR7015 is a great pre/pro, but I think anything prior to 2020 has a HDMI issue with certain 4K/120Hz sources. Consider SR8015 instead. In fact, I almost bought a used SR8015 unit. I did have a hard time choosing between the used SR8015, Cinema 40, and Cinema 50.
The X4800H was released in July 2023 here, and I immediately bought it because what I need is all in the X4800H (missing two channels and has three subwoofer outputs, but I think I can live with that).

Andrew, I currently own the Cinema 40 and the Sony 7000, and I think you are spot on in this review.
For everyday TV (Dish Network) I prefer the Marantz with no room correction and an old-fashioned manual setup. I could never quite get the sound of the Sony to match it.
For movies via disc or streaming the Sony wins by a hair, but I do use the Audyssey EQ app set to flat for movie listening with the Marantz.
For music in my room, I was stunned at the Sony quality. With pure direct on both the Sony and Marantz streaming from a Blue Sound Node 2i from my NAS or Amazon Music I can not get the Marantz to match the Sony. I have used both analog and digital outputs when listening. The Marantz still sounds good but not great.
At the current time, I have the Marantz in action and am working with REW and DSPmini to try to improve the bottom end. Then I am going to switch back to the Sony and compare again.
When my old processor pooped out back in the winter I started with an Anthem 1140 but the user interface and operational bug had me crying uncle after about 6 weeks.
    Keep up the good work!!!!

Sony str-az7000es is not available in Europe, however the Marantz cinema line is.
Marantz is much cheaper in EU than in US. E.g the Cinema 40 can be bought for 1,900EUR (2,000USD) in EU, compared to US price 3,500USD. Sony str-az7000es US price is 3,200USD.
So the situation in EU is as follows: Cinema 40 is 1,200 USD cheaper than Sony str-az7000es. For that money there is no question which one to prefer even if in EU the Sony would be available.

I has to be - Crutchfield is listing the 8015 as "Discontinued" - so there is no way Marantz is going to let a 9.4, 125W, AVR be its top of the line, flagship - especially with everyone else (including Denon, its sister company) having 11, 13, 15 channels and 140W-150W as their flagships.

    • @techsamurai11

@@gb3496Yeah but the Cinema 40 is competing with those AVRs in price. If they do launch a Cinema 30 to replace the 8015 with a toroidal, they'd charge $4,500-$5,000 for it. Plus they need a Denon identical model which would be the AVR-X8500HA that goes for $4,600 and weighs 52lbs - Marantz AVRs are usually under 40 so it would be a form-factor departure.
For $5,000+, it makes no sense to buy the Cinema 30 when you can get a RZ50 and a 7 channel BASX amp. Now you have separates and way more power as you can use the RZ50 for all surrounds (very little power usage) and bi-amp your LCR to get the most out of your premium speakers. The BasX is rated at 125 watts for 2 channels and 90 watts at 7 channels. I think those are conservative figures to avoid cannibalizing XPA sales.

Great review of the Marantz C40 - looks phenomenal, and LOVE the menu system. Marantz sets the standard on Menus. As a Denon x2600H owner, I was hemming and hawing over upgrading to the C40's smaller brothers, the C60 or C50 as we moved some items around from one room to another. ...I also thought of the x3800H. ...but instead, I took a little gamble, and I'm not second guessing my Anthem MRX 540 8K at all. Once the upgrading and set-up is over, which can be a PITA, the Anthem is SO good - the sound quality is outstanding, especially (as you and Kristi noted) for music. ...and that's a big reason I went with Anthem - they make M106 speakers just sing for both movies and music. And the fact you get 100wpc for 5 channels driven (or in the case of the 740 8K - 140wpc 5 channels driven, and 60wpc for 2 surround channels driven), it's not lacking in power, especially during movies.

How long did it take you to setup the Anthem? I thought about buying the Anthem MRX 540 8K but hear many issues with firmware/display bugs and that the setup is overly complicated. What were your specific issues? Did running their ARC genesis have a major impact?

    • @craigjohnchronicles2504
      @craigjohnchronicles2504 Рік тому +1

@@lukehoch9140 - you have to update the firmware right away, or the Anthem will give you fits. Once downloaded, you have to restart the receiver for the Anthem to install the firmware updates. It can take 20-30 minutes for the entire process. But me being a newb, took me a few hours to figure out while I was on the phone with Crutchfield - they’ll walk you through it if you have any questions.
The Anthem web-interface on a laptop certainly works. It just looks crude. It’s nothing you can’t really do on a Denon or Marantz through their on-screen menus.
You can access most of these menu on-screen, but it’s 100% archaic. Much easier to use on a laptop synced with the Anthem receiver.
That’s the fussy part. Once you’re beyond that, using the anthem is a piece of cake. I never have a need to look at the menu any longer. Just use the remote to turn the receiver on and off, and change volume really. lol
One thing I wish the Anthem receiver had was a “stereo” button, to automatically switch music to 2 channel music. Then a “movies” button to get back to surround sound. It’s a simple hoop I jump through using AppleTV with Apple’s lossless music app. Not really a biggie. But again, it’s such a simple feature, every remote for an AVR should have it.
I only have a 4.1 system, so I didn’t need a 7 channel, much less a 9 channel receiver. The sound quality in the end is so worth it. The clarity, detail, nuance, separation, and soundstage is just outstanding. I love the fact all channels driven are 100watts. Plenty of beef for mains and surrounds for our listening viewing space.
ARC - Our space isn’t overly complex nor huge, so ARC didn’t make as much of big deal as it would in a room with a wonky ceiling, open walls to the left or right, or strange room shape.

yeah it shows the maturity of the AVR industry - the Cinema 40 is technically a Denon 4800h (also made at the Shirakawa facility) which afaik has identical parts to the Cinema 40 and is $1,000 cheaper.
Look at the Onkyo RZ70, Integra DRX-8.4, and Pioneer LX805 - the inside is identical with the preouts being the biggest difference among the models.
The biggest thing to shake the industry up are the new Sonys which is the only thing that may deliver Trinnov-level spatial mapping but I haven't heard a recording of a Sony vs a Cinema 40. There's a video comparing the Anthem AVM90 and Trinnov Altitude 16 and the spatial effects of the Trinnov are superior even in the recording but it's out of reach and even the AVM90 would barely beat the 8015.
If anything, they are all looking at ways to reduce the costs and we've seen the disappearance of the toroidal transformer (Anthem and Rotel are the only two with toroidals at very high prices), arguably the most important audiophile component in an AVR. Sure EIs are great (look at Luxman or Denon is the usual retort) but I was looking at inside images of 30-40 smaller audiophile stereo receivers and they all had toroidal transformers with a French one having 2 of them in a monobloc design so yeah EI is great...
The 8015 at least sports the toroidal transformer of yesteryear that my 3 8002s also have. Anyway, I'm getting a RZ50 so I can test Dirac. We shall see how it fares...

I used to build Heathkit products as a kid with my father who passed on his interests and love of music to me. Things have changed so much that I am not quite able to keep up. I do understand the concepts so I find your videos a great resource because you help sift down to the basics that help me grasp what's going on. I am from the old school where a lot of companies were highly respected such as McIntosh or Nakamichi were top of the line. I think that some of the old companies are not the same. We are going to buy a new system and I actually got my wife on board. We listened to the B&O Harmony and it sounded great but I couldn't help but wonder if putting together an entire system would be the better way to go. After hearing your reviews sanity has taken over and I am looking in the range of the Marantz Cinema 40, Sony 7000ES etc. That leaves me more money to upgrade the TV and speakers. @@LeezahB so for me personally, B&W has always been about detail, bass control and utter transparency, meaning minimum coloration, like Marantz has that warmth, B&W has some sterility to the sound. Strong words, I know, since they have a sound to them as well, just a different kind. And by roll off I mean the Tweeter just completely stops playing after a certain frequency since it cannot reproduce past that point, even if there is anything in the recording. Like my Martin Logan tweeter goes to 25Khz, and after that there’s nothing there. Most B&W tweeters go way past that, and although most ears can’t hear anything past 20Khz usually, your ear can feel the pressure of the sound changing, and I call that airiness. You can’t hear it, but you feel it there. ML rarely has that effect, while B&W always felt more “alive” up top. That’s pretty much it.

@@gavriushka Thanks for this explanation, my friend! I am not an expert in numbers, but I feel that my new speakers (Buchardt S400 MKII), paired with my Model 40N give me plenty of detail without being clinical, with a touch of warmth, and the bass is sooo good! I am sure some might find my pairing too warm or not perceived as detailed enough, but it's just what I was looking for. I don't think a certain warmth or fullness by definition has to mean no detail or airiness. It's just so interesting how subjective our hearing is in relation to perception. I find some speakers are too thin, or too forward and bright. I listen to a varied style of music, but since a huge part of that listening is of operatic recordings, I would find some speakers too bright for extended listening of high sopranos (for instance) wailing high E's etc. I find all music enjoyable and musical with my new system, and am so grateful there are options for all of us. 🥰💖😘

What a great help you have been to me.) Twice!
    I really enjoy your channel

Andrew, when you do these listening tests, receiver vs receiver, what is your A/B listening approach? Are you using a speaker level switcher to take the receiver speaker outputs and do a side by side?

I have the old Marantz AVR8003 pre and matching mm8003 power amp. It sounds like I would be better off swapping to the cinema 70 to use with my existing power amp rather than a cinema 40? I only have 7 speakers in total and have no plans to add to that, so would I be better off just saving the money on the 70 rather than getting the 40? thoughts? Its a shame Sony don't do a cheaper version with pre -outs too?

I just purchased the Marantz 40 and out of the box it was ok but honestly it took a bit of working with the Direct to get its full potential out of it... I still don't think I'm getting 100% yet.
I will say using the Dreadnaught amp instead of the internal amplifer was much better...

So the big questions, do I go with the Marantz C40 or the Onkyo RZ70? Also does anyone know what DACs the Marantz uses?

Hi Andrew - I have watched your channel for a few years but am only now in a position to act on some of your recommendations like this awesome receiver. I want new speakers to go with it in my theater room/studio. What speaker system would you recommend that I pair this with, do you have a 7 or 9 channel speaker system you recommend?

Thanks for the video. I have been saving and I plan to give myself a new sound this Christmas, especially for watching movies at home. I have heard very good reviews of Sony, but when you invest so much money you want the best in quality/price and your comparisons are the best.

Would something like the Marantz Cinema 60 be good for a pair of Martin Logan 60xti?

While I like the Dirac option, at $349 I would use Audyssey and buy the $20 app for iPad, use target curve 2, and make adjustments to simulate a result closer to the Harmann curve to the degree that suits your ear. It can be tricky, but it is doable.

Now the last comparison of 2023 should be the Primare spa25, that would round things out nicely.

I have the 50 and preferred my manual settings over audyssey.
Don't feel the need to spend the extra $$ for Dirac in my room.

In the marketing material the C40 is said to have better quality components than the C50. Does this mean better quality parts does not equal better sound, if the main difference between these two is the rated power?

I've owned the Cinema 40 for about 4 months and have been very happy with it. Recently I was in a hifi store and had a demo of the Focal Kanta 2's. I absolutely fell in love with their sound. Do you think the Cinema 40 would be able to drive the Kanta 2s? Or would I be better off sticking to to something like the Aria line?

The Cinema 40 should have no issues driving the Kantas.

Thinking and thinking some more about going Marrantz cinema 50 and a ones in a lifetime Amp10 behind it. Then add another B4s makes 2 subs placed to the back of my couch. Moving my B&W 703 s2 to the back and going for B&W 702 s3 in the front. It’s going to take a few years of thinking and then thinking some more!🧐
    it’s got to be done!

I'm on the lookout for a new reciver, and the Cinema series seems really interesting. I've been specifically looking for recivers with room correction.
But as an Anthem MRX520 owner, I'm kinda sad that you have to pay an additional $250 to $350 for Dirac Live for the Cinema series when ARC is included in Anthem recivers.
Does anyone know how Audyssey compares to Anthems ARC?
