- How upset would you be if you booked a vacation to ride a brand-new roller coaster, only to arrive and find that it’s CLOSED? This is a growing trend in the theme park world. Top Thrill 2 at Cedar Point and Hyperia at Thorpe Park are among the many rides that are closed after merely days of operation. What in the world is happening? I live in Arizona and flew out to Cedar Point for TT2 just to see the signs that say it is closed. I then had a trip planned to visit for Hyperia just to land in London Heathrow and check UA-cam and see a video about Hyperia being closed, and I thought I was actually going to cry. 😭

Hyperia is currently testing so wait for Thorpe to drop the announcement then book in advance, the ride is great

Booking a trip to ride a coaster on opening year is like buying a console at launch date. It's always been risky, even though this year's closures are more notable and frustrating. I usually wait a year.
I do that too for any new restaurant...let them work the kinks then go
It does suck a little when it's at your home park but yeah I usually wait a year if it's not in my home area
Even if the ride works fine the lines are gonna be brutal.
I want to ride TT2 as much as anyone, I booked for Aug... so I still have a chance.
I just hope it doesn't open the week before I get there and its slammed.

To be fair, as Universal goes, they tend to learn from their mistakes. Grand opening of Universal Studios Florida was an absolute mess, but Island of Adventure went incredibly smooth. Hagrid's grand opening was a mess and everything they did wrong with that they fixed when opening Velocicoaster. I'm sure the grand opening for Epic Universe will be flawless.
The more complex these coasters become the more room for error. I have no problem for coasters opening day to be pushed back for safety concerns, but to have these extremely complex rides be rushed to the public, open for a week, and then close is just ridiculous. I also love when a problem is found on the ride so they shut it down for a day or two, and after a week of it reopening it proceeds to have the same issue or a brand new one in an endless cycle all season long. Either deadlines are crazy, or the engineers are struggling to keep up with the evolving complexity.
Both coasters are not that complex tho.
I honestly think people need to calm down when discussing these ride closures. This is especially true with Top Thrill 2 because of all of its new technology, something was bound to go wrong. Also, Cedar Point has many other great coasters including Steel Vengeance, Maverick, Millennium Force, and more. So considering all of that, there's no reason to get super mad about one ride closing and rescheduling a trip around one ride.
This is more than just working kinks out. This is a major design flaw. And honestly, who didn't see this one coming? Cedar Point did this to themselves and went the cheap route and they got exact what they paid for.
Turns out hyperia isn’t open on June 8th and they haven’t even announced an opening date 😭

They were testing non-stop today. Just left the park. Let’s see if they open tomorrow. If not, then I am pretty sure it will be open at the weekend.

0:35 I love how Disney Universal SeaWorld and Cedar Fair get in trouble.
A top-notch German park releases one or two commercials with the phrase "opening in ..." and remains completely silent until the actual opening. Without any fanfare, it opens! It works perfectly fine.
I remember Rookburgh/F.L.Y just being opened on a random Thursday, i think we are talking about the same thing
Not being 100% ready on opening day has been extremely common in the theme park industry as far back as Disneyland's opening day. It's not even exclusive to theme parks either. Anything that's conceptually new usually isn't perfect on its first day. Every industry does this, it's just not usually visible because it's not a giant machine meant to move people around standing in the open. It's retraining, rewriting, redesigning, fixing, breaking and erasing, all behind usually closed doors.
I'm just saying, as the rides get more and more complex (like TT2 and Hagrid's (They're some of the most complex rollercoasters in the world)) the more likely they are to completely break at any moment.

Should theme parks work out ALL the kinks of a new ride before opening to the public?
Yes, I honestly kind of understand Top Thrill 2 since it has prototype trains. I don’t really understand how the chain broke 3 days after opening for Hyperia.
Yup
Ideally yes, but things are going to pop up when they go to full capacity. Keep in mind that when a new ride does open, there's usually a long line of people that want to ride, and they aren't typically soft launched. It's probably the hardest that a rollercoaster will ever be worked while still breaking in.

Very entertaining and fun to watch. I remember this happening with Twisted Timbers in its first 2 months of operation. I was able to ride but only about 50% of the time due to it being closed because of various problems. Thanks for posting this.

Anybody else remember when they would actually be done and have 1/2 the kinks worked out b4 the season even began, like a whole 20million dollar hyper coaster or something of that scale basically good/ready2go? Now they get down sometime in summer with 1/4 the amount of track generally easier to assemble and usually it's August-September.

I know very well new rides can be temperamental and I will not go to a park for the new ride until I see it has been running without any major periods of downtime for a month or two

New rides are ALWAYS a risk and always have been unless they are off the shelf clones.
There should be soft openings to trial the roller coasters and also the operations of the queue flow. I was blessed to have been at Islands two weeks before the opening of the Velocicoaster and got to ride it. The longer the trial runs, the more they can work out the kinks.

Definitely not a new phenomenon unfortunately. Usually best to not go early unless its not difficult to get to the park or you cant change plans.

You forgot to mention how steel curtain at kennywood “opened” in 2020 or 2021 and still has been only opened to the public for like half of a season and is closed again this year. I get that it had a derail during one of the tests but you’d think by now it would be fixed because that was over 3 years ago!

Ive said it before about TT2, I believe they knew the issue before it closed but decided to do the media and opening days to at least get the buzz out there.

Yeah, no. TT2 has much faster operations and up until the issue was discovered was actually much more reliable.

We live in a society nowadays where products aren’t built to be tough and or to last.
Call me full of Crap when I apply this to Roller Coasters cause ride’s nowadays have so many complex parts.
When one thing goes wrong even if it’s small. Ride shutdown.
Solution? Roller Coasters just need to be designed simpler. Not necessarily in construction but by design to be able to sustain itself long term.
The reason top thrill 2 closed is because one of the trains had a crack in the wheel

I went on to thril 2 on May 4Th opening day
and it was a really good coaster but is so so bumpy

I personally don’t care about press launches. I only meant that parks should test them more thoroughly with the public. That’s all
Rides need time to settle and to get the bugs sorted out but I do understand people been annoyed if they travel far but a coasters opening is like the equivalent of been a early adopter in the tech space except to be a guinea pig and problems

@@Brogancoasters That's what I thought. They've had decent to good reliability with their new coasters. Only issue I've seen is Iron Gwazi taking 15 minutes longer to open on some days.
