Love that you COULD have just gone like, "It should take about 3 tbsp of water" and not shown each tablespoon as you added it, or NOT shown the rolling out method, but that you actually DO show it so we can see it and learn it as you go. Thank you for always being so very explanatory, Mary! You make this cooking thing so much easier!!

Thank you! I’m definitely a beginner to pie crust making and that’s because of a discouraging experience two years ago:( I found some of the organic whole wheat pastry flour in my cupboard and followed your recipe! The crust was delectable in taste and perfect in texture and flakiness! I made a berry pie with a classic lattice top!

Always learn from you. Have used vodka in pie crust which helps with flakiness and keeps it from getting tough, but never vinegar. Can’t wait to try it. Not much of a hard type drinker so a small bottle of vodka in freezer for pie crust can last years. LOL Thanks. Love the shortcuts like making pie crust once for two or more uses. For ‘just me’ use, I use small glass pie pans but for company I use regular size. Seems like time wasted to make anything for one or two people so I do full sized recipes once and then divide for freezing. Things like lasagna are divided into glass loaf pans that are just one noodle wide and long and extras are frozen unbaked so I’m still getting fresh made. Simplifies my life so much and you are teaching even more ways to simplify. so, so happy I found you!! 💕 🙏 ❤️

Joy Louise - Oh Joy!! You are always so sweet. Yes, I am very impressed with the vodka tip and am going to give it a try. I don’t drink it either but I keep it on hand for my homemade vanilla. I think the vodka will actually work better than the vinegar!! I learn from you!! So glad you are here!! Love, Mary❤️😀❤️

It's been quite a year since making a crust ,because buying organic pre-made... I like whole wheat taste, but stiff crusts are hard obviously....

I have I have used coconut oil to make my crust for a half a decade or more and every now and then I get one that is more hard and crusty but I think you explained that was probably because of my using a red wheat hard not knowing it would be that way with such. People enjoy my use of the coconut oil and speak of tasting it in what few things I have the time to make to pass around.....

I have to apologize but I believe some of my earlier videos don’t have printable recipes to accompany them. All of my newer videos do have printable recipes. As time permits, I am working through my old videos and adding printable recipes. I will add this to my list. When it comes to making piecrust, start with just about a teaspoon of vinegar to help make the crust flaky. That should do the trick. Thanks so much for your patience. Thanks for this. Believe it or not, this is useful information for body builders. I’ve been meal prepping egg fritatas so that I could get my protein in the morning. But the problem for me is texture. When I eat them I find myself wishing I had some kind of bready carb element to go with. I’m thinking about making the frittatta into a quiche but pie crust is a lot of empty carbs without fiber and nutrients. This might be my workaround.

Hi Mary-Great informative video.. Appreciate your tips..
I am a lard person.. And I will add 1t. of baking powder with it to make it lighter and flakier.. that also reacts with the vinegar. (And that might be for 2 crusts. )
That was a good question about the coconut oil.. I also use that a lot too. But I had to think on that.. I guess I mostly make pies in the winter months and my house runs cold.. and is well below the liquid temperature for coconut oil so it is solid already. (And you know how hard it gets)
And I tend to do cobblers in the summer months.. and that gets butter.. for the crumble crust.
Sometimes you don't know why you do what you do, but that may be why for me.
Now-Have you ever used whole wheat you milled? ;)
I think I might be tempted to use that rice to mill and see what it is like. Thanks for taking us along.. :) GREAT job.

And I am so intrigued with your idea of adding baking powder. I have to try that!! Thanks for the tip!! Thanks for sharing your info about coconut oil. That was very interesting. It’s usually so warm here that the our coconut oil is quite liquidy so I don’t know how well it would work. But I love the idea of making crumbles, etc. Thanks so much for all the great info...as I always say...I’m so glad you’re here!! I am making some vegan dishes for some friends that are going to be joining us. I will be making a vegan pie crust. I made my own vegan butter. I was out of almond milk so I made some almond milk use coconut oil nutritional yeast it also cost for some apple cider vinegar I believe it was like a teaspoon I’ll have to get you the full recipe. And it also called for canola oil or a plain vegetable nondescript oil. I wanted it to be rich in flavor so I used olive oil a good olive oil. The reason you need apple cider vinegar for this is you’re basically going to be replicating buttermilk. So after you make your almond milk or the almond milk you have from the store can you turn it into buttermilk but it doesn’t necessarily turtle like it does when you’re making regular buttermilk with vinegar. I will tell you what, my husband is a good old Missouri boy who was brought up on butter and he actually loves the vegan butter. I also put turmeric in the recipe. No the recipe I followed did not have this but I found it gave it a really good taste. I’ve put ground mustard in it and gave it a really good taste but if I were you I would pull a little bit that vegan butter aside and try it with a little bit of mustard powder in it not regular mustard mustard powder. I love it. I made peace with mint and green onion for dinner last night with vegan butter and it was so creamy and lovely that now we don’t even reach for butter anymore we go straight to the vegan butter

How do they make white whole wheat? Bleach it? In my country we don’t have bleached flour, we have two types of whole wheat, coarse and fine.
We have the same two types of rye flour, we also use fine barley and oats in our bread.
After watching your Chanel and other good American Chanel that are health focused ,I really appreciate the strickt rules for food we have in the EU and the even stricter in my country.
No gmo food at all,all animals are mostly grass feed , ( the cows even have to have their own mattresses to sleep on in the barn to make sure they are happy and comfy )
very strickt rule on how much fat can be in ground meat and on the animal in general.
The chickens can not be caged. Eggs are completely safe to eat raw.
Extremely strickt rules for the use of pesticides, even if I’d like it to be totally forbidden. And lots of additives and preservatives that are allowed in other countries are not here.
On the other hand it’s very hard to find all organic vegetables and fruit and meat, but it’s really not a must over here.
The saddest thing is not being able to buy farm fresh milk, it has to be pasteurized. We are not allowed to buy directly from farms.
In most thankful for the water.
No chlorine in the water. Where I live we actually have the best quality tap water in the whole country . It’s the same water as is sold as Voss water, so I clean my house, shower and flush my toilet with Voss water,😂.
Sometimes ist’s kind of sad not to be able to get convenient stuff like cake mixes or cool whip , canned soups and so much other pre made stuff you can get, and the supermarkets has a lot fewer items than in yours, but all in all I think it’s for the best.

Hi Malina, WOW!! Thank you SO much for sharing all this wonderful info. How fascinating! As to White Whole Wheat flour...it is not bleached - it is 100% Whole Wheat milled from Hard White Wheat Berries - as opposed to Hard Red Wheat Berries which is generally just referred to as Whole Wheat here in the US. But both are 100% Whole Wheat - just different varieties of wheat berries. Thank you so much for being here! Reading your comment was fascinating!! Love, Mary

Mary's Nest That might be a type of wheat that don’t grow in our climate . I find these things interesting to look into after I have started to watch UA-cam channels about “ old fashioned health food” ,homesteading and the gaps diet.
I found your channel when I looked for recipes for bone broth and have been binge watching it. You are such a good teacher and I really enjoy your content, thank you😊

The vodka evaporates so you get enough moisture to mix it without having so much that the crust is tough.

You talk a lot about peripheral stuff to do with your baking ie different types of flours …a list of ingredients would be so much more helpful…can’t see one in the description

A huge THANK YOU, Mary for your information on making whole wheat pie crust which I prefer as I really like the taste. I will definitely try your recipe, sounds good and makes sense.
I watched Phyllis Stokes making pie crust using coconut oil, so I tried her recipe and it turned out amazing. Here is the URL
for that recipe: . ua-cam.com/video/GRxBzVCpLsI/v-deo.html . I like using oil in pastry but it is slightly difficult for me to work with without it braking apart when placed in the pie pan. When I used coconut oil it stayed together as if I used Crisco and it felt like a Crisco piecrust but tasted like an oil crust. It was very easy to work with.
