The wife has horses, (I pay for the HAY BURNING MONEY PITS)... SO, this year, the horses are going to pack my ass into the EAGLE CAPS in Oregon, for a November elk hunt. (Hopefully, they pack a bull out, while I walk out with a lead rope in my hands). I NEVER understood, why, outfitters limit gear to 120 pounds, when I weigh 225 pounds. Seams like the mule SHOULD be able to pack as much dead weight, as my LIVE weight. Simple answer? Thanks John

We use and pack horses on our cattle range in British Columbia. This year, we completely lost road access to our base camps due to a large landslide we cannot clear. Until now, we were able to get ATV access to base camp. Your video really helped me wrap my head around getting everything in on the pack horses, particularly demonstrating the cooler packing. Thank you very much!
The short answer is, we don't. The one caveat is if something obvious occurs on the ride/packin that could jolt the rifle. This is pretty darn rare. If a scope is mounted properly, nothing on a packin should affect your zero. In any remote situation where a gun could have taken some serious punishment (dropped in rough terrain while scrambling, horse fell on a scabbard, etc...) we check zeros by shooting at rocks on dirt hillsides. If the zero has been knocked off, it will be obvious and we'll put up a target (usually one made out of whatever we can get) and proceed with normal sight-in procedures. On any packin hunt, I will always have a torque wrench incase I need to work on scopes. 80% of the time work on optics up in the mountains is errors in preparation on the hunter's part, most notably not keeping scope rings to torque specs.

how much can a hunter weigh
varies by outfitter. we always limited riders to 270-280lbs
