March 31, 2022---I'm 68 and think I read the book when I was in jr. high school. One thing I did learn was there was actually a tv series based on the book, which I think came out shortly after Frank's book was released. There weren't that many episodes and believe me, I've been checking YT and Ebay out in trying to find even one of the episodes.
I've read this book a dozen times, and I REALLY like your casting, especially for Lib. I really like the use of two different looks from the same actor for Mark and Randy, and Ewan would be a great Dan Gunn *with* the beard, though I'm not sure I can imagine him *before* the beard looking like Dan given that Ewan has such a baby face. I think I'd have had a less elegant Florence; I picture her older and dumpier, simpler or plainer in appearance. I like your Helen, though. I admit I do wish you'd included Malachai and at least one other of the Henry family. I like your use of the nuclear test footage. This kind of task would be a great assignment for an English or Digital Imaging class in high school. You have really clean edits in this; it's very smooth. Part of me really wants someone to make a film of the novel...and part of me doesn't want to be disappointed by a film of it, as I inevitably would be.
Whole cast too young on each character shown! Randy Bragg needs to be a much more rugged character and the Liberians nowhere near that age much less pretty according to the Books description.
Kim Novak, one of Hollywood's box office beauties as "Florence Wecheck"?! A lonely delusional grossly overweight gossipy spinster with graying red hair whom is unlikely to ever get a man.
The tempo, and volume of the head banging music clashes with the tempo of the book, and the times. Loud near metal rock music is out of place in a sleepy conserative rural small town in Florida. It is far from the mind set of the time. A review of Mayberry in the Andy Griffith Show might be a good start.

There was never a TV series. There was one loosely adapted Playhouse 90 teleplay called Forbidden Area. It was available on UA-cam.

Read this book many times since I bought it at a Scholastic Book Fair in 1971. Just gave it and all my favorite books to my grandsons.

I don't remember Randy being Rugged..He didn't hunt and was a laid back guy .Libs father called him a slacker.. I'd say he was about 32 to 34
