It might be worth the price for a collector. (I would need more information to decide) If they are being bought for resale, I would say no. Common silver age issues do not move well in low-grade. They might have the book value, but they sit forever. There are not enough keys to justify the investment.
I think for a collector it’s great
Man, as tempting as it is seeing all those silver-age books, it's just too much of a risk for that amount of money. I did something similar with a $6k collection and ended up recouping close to what I paid, but whew.....all the work that goes into just breaking even. As a collector, it might be worth it, but as a reseller, most likely not.

Retired from collecting comics years ago. So, my assessment will be at best wary and at worst jaded. Paying that much, I'd at least want to closely examine as many key Silver Age books as possible. You know the drill: Missing pages, torn interiors, rusty staples, personal notes to whomever written on the Letter pages (yeah, I've actually seen those).

Sight unseen, and with some keys weirdly missing in runs, this is an easy no thanks at 10k. This collection has very obviously been picked through imo.

@@StickygooseI personally think all spec prices are going to crash soon. The MCU was a major driver of people jumping into the hobby. As the MCU decays and fades away people are leaving the hobby and prices will return to what they were many years ago or even lower as more and more older collectors start dumping these massive collections.
Last week i could buy +/- 8500 DC/Marvel books between 1987-2003 including ASM300 and Uncanny X-men 266 for €450.... I did not go for it because 99% were run fillers, the amount of space it would take and the time i have to spend to get rid of them....

@Stickygoose Comics, you nailed it. You don’t know how things will play out via the internet. I would think that a collection like this would have all the books or at least the high dollar ones clearly displayed.
That said, I would book airfare to view the collection in person. That way you can have peace of mind.

Sticky if you really want these books, you owe it to yourself to fly down there and see them in person, then make an informed decision. Don't let FOMO getcha! Matter of fact, going forward I'm seeing any book I buy in person first, as well as any comic grading company or comic restoration company for myself, before I commit to doing business with them!

Sounds more of a logistics issue, in which if the owner is unable to store the books properly, Its safe that they have little clue in how to ship properly.
It could all be put in long boxes, on a pallet, and stacked 5 level high, 4-5 long boxes per level and shipped on a semi for a few hundred bucks
Its a matter of doing it in a secure manner, and paying for insurance

Have to get more pics or vids, especially noting any detached covers. Like said before, flying there and renting a van or box truck would be better than mailing.

To many red flags I would definitely not pay that amount. I would recommend travelling with someone to meet the seller and take a good look at the books they shouldn't have a problem with you going with your friend to check out the collection, and if he does have a problem with that just walk away 😀
Green Lantern 32 is not a key at all, but if he's talking 1st series then it is Golden Age, and those books are always fun. 2nd Series should be Silver Age into the Bronze. Frankly, this had to have been cherry picked. The only remaining keys are issues 78, and 83. Both are not even combined to make that total of $100. I would be curious about the condition of the Golden Age 32. Those books are fragile as hell. Hope that helps. I collect GL exclusively, and have almost finished the Vol 2 key run.

The thing is why has it not sold locally? Maybe the books are to beat. It looks like people locally came and purchased the keys. 5,000 comics for 10,000 dollars seems like a good , but not a great deal. Hold out and wait for a great deal.

If you're serious about a collection like this purchase a plane ticket and go look at it in person. That's the only way to guarantee a safe deal.

This is were you rent a truck and review in person. Then you will know for sure how to proceed.
My family is in the business of buying and selling and unfortunately i dont think its worth it. Main reason is you cant see what is all there. That page means nothing unless you can gets hands on it. Shipping is way to risky with that size of a collection. Price wise is not bad but alot of work goes into that with not alot of return

Take the 10k add in the time to grade and price and all the weekends at shows and the time and $ to haul them all back. Then take the 100 best books and if they can’t cover everything then it’s definitely a hard pass. My guess is that it would be a big fat no
A lot of leg work
I look at this as a gamble at best. Some of the market is in a downward trend. Granted, early pre-code horror and key golden era are still trending up. But this collection does not have these from what I saw.
A story oncomic gambling: Two years ago, a favorite LCS dealer retired. He tried to sell his entire 100,000 comics + trade paperbacks for $0.50 each if someone would buy all of them. All of the large dealers started to lowball him (one offer was ten cents each with bags and boards), so he offered up the supply to local collectors for a dollar apiece. He discounted the price to eighty cents apiece if a short box was bought at a time. The big dealers assumed that it was all low value commons. It was not what they thought it was. There was gold in there.
There were a few golden age books here
Try and make a deal for ONLY the x-men and JIM. That way, you can get the good stuff without all of the bulk.
Im neither a collecter or dealer.However I know business.I would pay 8k for the entire thing and sell/trade a few to recoup my investment as quickly as possible. The rest you can sell it out in lots/retail. A good buy if you can get it at the right price in my opinion.

Without the major keys, you could be looking at a lot of time that has to be invested in moving this collection. To me, it looks like he probably pulled his grails out of the collection and is looking to get rid of whatever he could do without. Is the guy down to just sell specific runs that he has in there?

Not enough meat on the bine, and not enough big keys.

So, why hesitate? A lot of work? I don’t get it. First things first. If you were to rework the deal subtract the big expensive books off the top of the price. Then the you have your remaining balance of what you paid. Count the rest of the books for qty. Take the remaining balance of what you paid and divide by the qty of books remaining in the collection and get your cost average at the customers price. Once you have done that then re work the entire deal being ultra conservative dropping the average grade by 2-3 points sight unseen. Get your book pricing for those dropped grades and get your cost averaging on your numbers. Negotiate the deal to your favor including shipping or you personally picking it up. Get it home break the deal down and grade what you need to grade, send the excess to heritage auctions to let others fight for it, and keep what you want to keep. Deals done and move on. I don’t get the over analyzing of deals. Seems to me comic guys really complicate things by asking others what do you think. It’s not rocket science. That’s my two cents.

Then it's a matter of the wow factor books for only $2 each for me, and there appear to be a lot of those here ( perhaps thousands???). . . how much would you spend in the wild on nice silver plus later finds @ $2 each? Thousands I assume. . .personally I wouldn't mind gathering in the break-even steadily to get nice silver & bronze age in quantity for a garage sale price -- $2 early X-men in nice condition is a fairly persuasive proposition lol @@Stickygoose
Just sell the 1st Swamp Thing immediately & get the ball rolling towards a rapid recoup . . .after you pull all your PC items for only $2 each it will all make sense. . .but if you don't see enough of those to get excited about -- or conversely, if there are too many keepers to recoup easily with what's left -- you might want to pass :)

I probably wouldn't buy it. As a collector I would rather just buy some keys with 10k. However, if you want to get into selling books, it might not be that bad. I think the youtuber named mint-hunter comics is rather successful at selling bulk books on live claim sales (but he has a huge following and gets a few hundred people attending these claim sales)

I am not part of the 3% of comic book collectors that can throw thousands of dollars for a purchase. I believe long boxes of raw books can be very tricky and is normally discounted in these types of situations. If there is a grail one or two in there that could easily make up the cost then it might be worth it. The problem with long boxes is you end up with a few books you don't really care for and there is no gurantee you can quickly sell it so you end up hoarding it taking up a lot of space. I think it gets really bad when a collector starts to rent out storage units to store their comic books and collectibles. I wish to never get to that point, and I did see someone on the news report his stuff was stolen from a storage unit. He did not look very rich and I just don't see the logic of him spending additional money for storage just to own something.
I get your concern, but unfortunately one can just as easily have a collection stolen if kept at home.

At best that collection is worth 6k-7k. Unless they show alot more pics of the keys. Reminds me of ebay lot. Shows some good books and you know the rest are filler at best.

How much would it cost to ship 40 short boxes? That is assuming 5000 comics, bagged/board, fit into 40 boxes. Would 40 boxes need to be bought as well? Around $300 for those? It could end up a big gamble with comics sight unseen. I'd pass. It's a lot of work and you seem to be talking yourself out of the deal here. The collection has been picked, you know it.

Hard pass. A fgew nice-ish books, but it's almost all filler. "Technically" there is value there, but in reality most of it would need to be bulked out and sold at massive discounts just to get rid of it. What's left wouldn't even begin to get you your money back.
