Another tough choice. I have both of these CD's. This is one of my favorite songs to sing myself. I'm a big fan of L'Arpeggiata, and I love their jazzy arrangements of Purcell "standards." I believe baroque and jazz actually have a lot in common and that the two genres can work well together. I remember at one time wondering whether a countertenor could be an effective jazz vocalist. Philippe Jaroussky answered that question for me. Of course Tim Mead's performance is more conventional, but one of the best.
@@JacquelineLanceTenor Thank you for the suggestion. I had not heard of him before so I listened to a UA-cam of his performance with The Academy of Ancient Music singing Vivaldi. But there seems to be a plethora of pop music videos of Holiday that aren't jazz associated with some mainstream TV program I have never heard of . I will continue to search .
I don't know if it's the sound engineering but Tim' s tone is fuller and more sensual. Even the musicians are better despite Jaroussky' s version' s attempt to jazz it up. Also I think musically Tim executes the grace notes smoothly and impeccably.

I love the brilliant quality of Jaroussky’s voice and interesting interpretation, though I’d give the edge to Tim Mead for his strong, traditional - but nicely ornamented - performance.

Tim Mead's version is very touching. Jazz version sounds nice, but it loses the gravity to hold the structure and everything feels like scattering into the air, which may be what Jazz is for.
P. Jaroussky - a nice but trivial tidbit; T. Mead - a serious performance that preserves in the great tradition of British countertenors . A simple choice
@@mjk5807 obviously there are no great traditions. the great counters are all exceptions: deller, kowalski, sabadus, orlinski... the english "great tradittion" is one of thin voices and very thin but well behaved singing- until the old woman comes out...
@@gerhardrohne2261 I somewhat agree; I listen to a few countertenors (mostly those you mentioned + Mena, Scholl), most of the others sound grotesque to me. But I have respect for the tradition of English cathedral singing. And Mead is from that tradition, I think. Deller, of course, unparalleled.

interesting ... the jazzy version is pleasing enough. Sometimes, the interpreter may take some liberties even with these respectable pieces otherwise music is a dead thing. Innovation is not the antithesis of memory. I like both versions
Tim Mead for his rich, full voice and diction (He is English is the end). Jaroussky's timbre does not appeal to me. Even if when he tries to add something extra and jazzy, it does not sound convincing to me.
Напрасно Вы смотрите на ситуацию таким образом. Дело не в оценке мастерства исполнителей, а в аранжировке, кому какая больше по душе. Да и манера пения есть разная, у Philippe Jaroussky она более открытая, у Tim Mead более академически прикрытая, и это не значит, что кто-то из них чего-то не умеет, каждый выбрал свой стиль. Дело зрителя - назвать, какой из стилей наиболее понравился. А то что "сами ничего не умеете" - по себе не судят, например я - профессиональный певчий, десять лет пою басовые партии в более чем десятке коллективов. Но это, разумеется, не ставит меня на одну ступень с этими мастерами, лишь даёт возможность оценить, понять, разобраться.

Lovely. Personal choice of course not a technical appraisal - I prefer Mead here. Mobley is the one for me, however. Acker on theorbo. Excellent.
