My Nan king cherries, make fabulous jam as well! They were provided as a hedge, with my last house, and the dropped cherries propagated themselves quite well. When I sold the house, I brought seedlings with me and they’re doing quite well at my new place further north as well. They are a favourite of the rabbits though, so I have to keep them well caged through the winter.
Prunus tomentosa is Nanking Bush Cherry. Fruits are only 1/2" which is why it is a conservation plant used for wildlife and is native to China. The leaves have a hairy underside (tomentosa) with exfoliating bark & it grows up to 15' tall and 15' wide, which mine are. Yours looks like a hybrid of a Meader Bush Cherry which only gets about 4' tall. The size of your berries are huge which caught my eye and your leaves are totally different too. It would be very difficult to process Nankings too because the fruit is so tiny which is why it is not for sale commercially. The wildlife LOVE the berries - (I even got cedar waxwings) and the blooms smell like vanilla in the spring.
Love your video and seeing your little girl helping. I especially like how you show how easy it is to pit them and preserve in a jar. I just planted 50 bare-root plants I ordered from CSFS in Ft. Collins, CO on their recommendation for winter hardy fruit trees adapted to CO cold, dry winters. Can't wait to see these mature and produce. Thanks for your video...good job!
Absolutely brilliant! I love the way you taught this technique. If my Nankings produce enough cherries this year I am definitely putting your preserving technique to work. Great video!
you have a great channel here! i am enjoying your videos...just subscribed to you...i need to order some nanking cherry bushes also...thanks for providing your source for plants!Happy Gardening!
You can ferment then in the honey like I'm doing with my cranberries from the store. Just pour on the honey roll the jar around to be sure all paces are full of honey. Open lid ring to allow air to get in and keep in a dark place at least 1 month or more. A sock over the jar works great so fruit flies, light and dust dont become a problem. Tighten lid every week or so roll jar around and repeat with lid not tight.
Hahaha. Thanks. Apparently, that wasn't Nanking cherry. We think it might be Korean cherry of some sort. However, One Green World stopped selling it. Now we have no idea what that cherry was. I think when we purchased it One Green World made an error by saying that it was Nanking cherry which has led us to repeat that mistake in the video.
@@YouCanToday Ok well that makes sense to me because while I don't yet have and cherries at my new property I did have Nanking cherries in the old garden and the whole time I was watching your video I was thinking those look like the largest Nanking cherries I ever seen. I was wonder what you were doing to get them to grow so large so now it all makes sense.
Started nanking cherries 30+ years ago. Order several starts and somehow ended up with a white version as well. My trees are getting older but still have a few white ones each year.
I agree with others. This is not Nanking Cherry. Joel, Jan, and Joy cherries are a hybrid and were created by Dr. Meader and are sometimes called Meader Bush Cherries.
Do you have to spray these bushes ? I just bought one bush last year and thankfully bought another this year . I did not know I had to have 2 for pollination. Thank you 🙏
As far as I know they are disease resistent and insects don't really go after them. Ours got damaged by the cicadas but I haven't really seen any other insect damage.
@@YouCanToday I see now that you’re in Pennsylvania. Thank you for sharing this, I am about to plant rows of all types of berries and fruit! I think I’ll be happier with Nanking rather than sand cherries
@@YouCanToday Seriously! I'm at the cusp of Zone 6 and somethings that dont grow well down South do okay here and some things that don't grow well in hotter less humid long summers do excellent here. Given the anti inflammatory properties of tart cherries I may give them a go. Zone 6 is begins less than an 50 miles due south. TFS!
Actually, from what we gather now we believe that those might not actually be Nanking cherries. I think the nursery that we got it from might have confused the names, or we did. The last of our research points to them being Korean or ground cherries instead. We did get 4 plants of true Nanking cherries this spring that we planted on our farm. We’ll keep an eye out on them and hopefully next year will be able to make a short video update on how they produce. Thanks for following our channel 😊
The leaves sure look much different than the Nanking Cherry plants I bought today. Everything I’ve seen about Nanking cherries is that their leaves resemble a raspberry plant leaf and has many veins to it and an extremely jagged (scalloped) tip, the leaves are much deeper green, and the fruit is only half the size of yours. Yours is not a Nanking Cherry bush but is obviously some sort of cherry tho. There are several other videos on here with Nanking Cherry plants and you can see the difference between yours and a real Nanking Cherry But great video tho otherwise!! I’d like to know what yours are cause I like the fruit size much better
this channel has a lot of potential. Video was relaxing, not too long, and you are easy to listen to.

Exactly. These don't look like Nanking cherries.
Hello from Lebanon county. I am adding Nanking cherries this year. Thanks for the informative video
Your garden is beautiful ❤️

This was a video I needed to see, my 5 Nanking Cherry trees will arrive next week. Good tips, advice and now to look up that cherry pitting machine.
Thank you for your video ! I have just ordered a few Nanking cherry shrub and hope they will thrive :)
Thank you! That's exciting!
They are easy to propagad by seed✌️

glad to find you, I am going to plant cherries this year and was looking into Nanking Cherries, thank you. I am in zone 2b in northeastern Ontario
Wow! That's a cold place to live! Good luck with the cherry planting!
1:24 To bad it's not a sponsored video because I am checking out One Green World now.

Honey by the gallon! 🍯 😆
Super i liked your video. Was wondering if you are able to sell some cutting. Do u think it be ok to propagate? Thankyou
I could try and take a cutting and see if it roots.
Hey! What is that de-pitting machine you have!?! Can you send a link?
Certainly! Here is a link to the cherry pitter we used: amzn.to/44tYU4i

Sour cherries make excellent jam, have you ever made jam from the nankings?
Have not tried making jam...yet :)

How come the birds don't bother your berries and cherries?
I figured that the birds didn't see these cherries because the bushes have a lot of foliage.
great info! where did yu find the plants?
One Green World
Where are you growing these? I’ve been between planting these or sand cherries
are you asking about type of soil, amount of sun...?

Those aren’t Nanking Cherries. Leaves are soft and furry on Nankings.😊

Whart Zone are you in?? Cgerries don't grow well at all in my Zone 7 area, but I have heard Nanking Chcherries can do well.
Thanks!

Do the naking cherries pits grow true to type?
I have never tried growing them from a pit. I assume not.

All my flowers died last year, covering them this year
That's so sad. We have to cover ours every year. They flower way too early.

Prunus japonica isn't Nanking Cherry...
That's what I was thinking cause mine look totally different.
Nanking cherry is Prunus tomentosa.
The leaves and the fruit don't match what I know about Nanking Cherries. This seems to be a different plant.
this isn t a Prunus tomentosa
