  • Patients undergoing heart catheterization have a small catheter inserted through a vein in either the wrist or groin in order to to look for coronary disease or blockages. As explained by Cindy Baker, MD, FACC, of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, the interventional cardiologist then injects dye and using x-ray, is able to see any narrowing or blockage.
While it is considered an invasive procedure, catheterization does not require large incisions, and most patients are surprised how painless it is and how comfortable they were during the procedure, which typically takes a half hour to hour.
