  • In today's video I am going to show you how I did an HF Mobile Install In A Ram 2500! I also show you where I bonded the truck to get a better more efficient ground plane. Most of what is used in this HF Mobile Install is from my last vehicle. This project ended up being easier than I had originally anticipated. The items I installed are the Yaesu FT-891 and the ATAS 120A. I have heard people trash talk the ATAS 120A, but I have been told the key to the ATAS 120A is grounding.

Great video. Thanks for the detailed walkthrough. The ATAS-120 is on my list of HF gear for the RV, so the grounding tips were very helpful. Like you, I’ll be pairing it with my FT-891

Thank you for taking the time to watch and the comment! It is greatly appreciated. The nice thing about the FT-891 is it has a setting, like the FT-857D, for the ATAS 120A. It is nice to push a single button to tune up the antenna.

I had a 2006 Ram 2500 and just mounted the Antenna mount near the back of the tailgate on the driver side and it worked quite well! And your right allot of people do not appreciate the Atas 120a antenna most likely because they do not have it installed correctly or grounded properly! On the same truck prior I had it originally mounted on the tool box ( I ran a ground wire from the frame to the mount and it worked well) but as it’s a large Antenna I didn’t like it that high in the air while driving! On my channel I have a video of operating HF Mobile with this setup! 73 K4BBC. P.S. I now have my FT-891 and ATAS 120a on our 2013 VW Jetta TDI Sport Wagon and it works great!

I have a 2020 2500 Diesel. Where do you run the power, ground and coax? for instance how do you get the coax into the cabin from the back and where did you go through the firewall for the power and ground? @@WJ6FRadio I'm not sure if it helps, and I'm not sure of what model Ram it was. But I watched a video might have been a CB, and the guy ran the coax through a grommet on the passenger side B pillar. He split the grommet and he said there is a hole on the inside behind the trim to bring it in. He also bought a replacement grommet for about 5 dollars to replace later if he sells the truck. I have a 2002 dodge and looking for ideas on mounting. I also might be mounting a 400 XDR. For that money you can pick up a used screwdriver antenna that would work much better. I get the whole bolt on thing was easy to do but that antenna is not very good. It barely can hold 100 watts look at the specs on it. 120W 7/14/21MHz (SSB, CW; 50% duty cycle). You can even build a Don Johnson screwdriver that will run circles around it for less than half the cost of the ATAS. I get that it works but you can do better for sure.

@@WJ6FRadio I am back again after some family interruptions. Life happens. 😀 Did you use a duplexer to feed HF/50 to the FT-891 & VHF/UHF to the FTM-400? I can go back and look at the video again to see if you already answered my question. Also I think you mounted the ATAS on the tailgate door. If that is true, do you have any trouble with the swinging of the antenna on that mount? I had assumed I would mount it to the fixed side next to the tailgate on my truck (probably near the tail light so I would have room for clearance/obstructions).
