- Join us as we figure out how to build a traditional clinker wooden boat. We look at the history of the Morgan Giles dinghy and set off in the pouring winter rain to get some wood. We start the lofting and making the moulds and dream about adventures to the other side of the River Exe.

I subscribed 2 minutes in. Can't wait to see this series. Nothing I want more than to watch two blokes build a boat.
One of the best boat building YT channels in the making here. Thnx Boys. Got me hooked.
Wow, thanks!
Therapeutic to watch 😊 Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!
Fabulous filming, editing and audio. Well done.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Not too shabby 😊
Thanks.
Hello. Just been recommended your chanel through a friend of my wife who is an historian specialising in Teignmouth. I am by trade a wooden boat builder and will very much enjoy following your journey building that lovely dinghy from that most famous of yards. All the best.
Wow that's a great story. New episode on Saturday - hope you enjoy it.
It's wood it's a boat ifs renewables it's timeless what's not to love?
THere's some more about the renewable nature of wooden boats in the next episode which will be out on 2nd December. Hope you enjoy that too.
Great Start
Glad you enjoyed it.
love the camaraderie that goes on in the work shop. wish I could be there with you.Keep up the good work. Cant wait to see the next one.
Thanks 👍
So much enjoying the building process here in California!
Many thanks - glad you're enjoying it!
A yachting mate pointed me at this last week and I have been binge watching since. Very absorbing and lovely to relax and watch. I can see the Morgan Giles slipway across the water from home. Any idea when you are going to launch? I would so love to be there, and send some pics to my buddy. Star Cross is not so far. I will wear my ancient Norgie jumper in honour.
Welcome aboard!
Looking forward to seeing the progress
Thanks, welcome aboard!
T5his will be fun to watch. Thanks for doing it.
There's plenty of ups and downs to come!
Engaging story right from the start. Great commentary too. Looking forward to following this 🙂
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hello from a rigger, bosun and wannabe boatbuilder in Hamburg/Germany. Nice to have you as a sequel to Tally Ho and Arabella.
Vielen Dank. Hope you enjoy the next episode.
Without getting boring, this video shows a more realistic amount of work that goes into building boats the way our grandfathers did. Unlike many of the boatbuilding videos on youtube.
Well done!
I envy the skill of those boatbuilders!
Really well filmed and edited. There's a certain fascination with wooden yachts and the stories that live through them. So glad that you've captured that spirt and made it available to share.
Thank you very much!
This has to be the best boat building channels on YT (and I have watched quite a few). I love the pace, the filming, the editing, the music but most of all the dialogue. Its really about life rather the about boat building, for example, when you talk about how a vague idea on the back of an envelope suddenly turns into concrete plans with materials suddenly arriving and you know you are committed to the project. I think we all know that feeling whatever the project. Cannot wait to see lots more. Thanks you for making the videos.
Thanks for your very kind comment. Much appreciated.
Super, awesome. See the craftsmanship in your work adorable
Thank you! Cheers!
Fascinating. I look forward to more Videos
Thanks for watching!
You don`t often see a trad. boat in the making.
Great rare content gents !
Glad you enjoyed it
I like work work ,very nice. I am in the early day of banging a very old sharpie ketch back together in the U.S. I had never heard of Le Tonkinois, took a Quick Look around the ether and I think I will give it a test. I’ve got years before I will need any varnish. So ,thanks
Hope it helps.
Wonderful! New subscriber here as I prepare to binge watch them all to get caught up! lol
Welcome aboard!
This is a very beautiful video, thanks
Thanks
Looking forward to seeing more
Thanks
Beautifully produced video, can’t wait for the next episode!
Glad you enjoyed it!
What a great find, I’m going to enjoy this. Thank you. When she is done will you bring it to the Thames Trad Boat Rally it would fit in perfectly, and the Falmouth Classics.
Perfick. Thanks
Thanks for your comment.
Brilliant video, I too am hooked. Well done 👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love the gentle laid-back nature of the video. I'll admit to hovering over the "X" in the top right hand corner of my screen when the video started, in case it was by an over-excited American, and was much relieved when it wasn't.
Glad you liked the style. There are some great videos out there. Neophyte Boatwrights are really good at explaining the process.
@@jonsealwoodturning4673 .........yeah, but they've done nothing at all for just about ever. If you want great boat-building videos (small boats, not Leo's Tally Ho -sized projects), then Mark Reuten at Nomad Boatbuilding is hard to beat.
We American got excited back around 1776…….and it’s still going on…….LOL
@@k9six185 Huh? I don't suppose that's an attempt at humour, is it.
@@MikeAG333 well of course it is…that’s how us over-excited Americans behave……
I've just found this channel and - having been a cabinet-maker - am so pleased to see you using traditional woodworking tools properly!
Awesome, thank you!
Great work with the video, commentary and story telling. Can't wait to see your progress. Thank you.
Really nice to hear you like the storytelling - that's a tricky bit to get right.
Love the lofting
Thanks - it scrambles your head but is kind of addictive.
Nice video. Looking forward to the build journey
You and me both!
Good luck with building this boat I will follow you👍
Welcome aboard!
Hi Jon, great video! I didn't know you played the piano as well. Looking forward to future installments
Thanks Leighton - my piano playing is really slow but garageband helps me out! Thanks for the help.
beautifully shot sequences
Thanks
Looking forward to the adventure, good luck to you, been watching Leo work on the Tally- Ho. Your video looks to be very relaxing.
Thanks 👍
Looking forward to the rest of the build.
Hope you enjoy the next episodes every two weeks.
Cheers from Arizona. Can't wait for the next episode. A little sad to see once a thriving business gone.
Great to know we've made a link with Arizona!
Fascinating and well worth watching. Looking forward to future episodes
thanks
What a thoroughly worthwhile project - building a piece of history!
THanks. Glad you are enjoying it.
What a great cinematography! Looking forward to future parts.
Really nice that you appreciate that part of the project.
This is so beautiful. Well done chaps
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.
Really nice project - can't wait for the next episode.
Great. In the next episode the oak arrives and we make the keel and the stem.
Love your idea, great to keep the legacy alive!!
Thanks Paul
I like your style. Looking forward to seeing more.
Thanks
I can't wait to see more Episodes!!!
Great - they will be every two weeks and at the moment it looks like there will be 10 of them.
Looks promising blokes!
Glad you enjoyed it. Next one is in two weeks.
Nice - looking forward to the next vid!
Us too!
looking forward to the build
Thanks - should be an interesting voyage.
Beautiful video. I look forward to seeing your progress from video to video.
Thank you!
Good luck with the build -looking forward to following our progress!
Thanks!
Really nice format for this series from discovering the old plans in a museum to the drive up to the sawmill and selecting the timber for the keel. This is so much more real than the numerous youtube time-lapse or speeded up videos on similar subjects. The music, the interview, the lofting are all such a great part of this, please keep the format and show us as much as possible at every stage, the ups and downs we all get in any project.
Very helpful feedback. Thanks.
Great new angle on a build - love it already - cheers from Australia 🇦🇺
Glad you like it!
Glad to have discovered your channel and subscribed. Keen to follow your build! Good luck!
Thanks for subbing
Great, loving this. Nobody better than Nick Gates to do a sympathetic restoration. Andy UK
Couldn't agree more!
Well done, Carry on... good luck.
Treehouse🌲Boat⛵️Works
Thanks, next episode will be along in two weeks - setting up the keel and stem.
Really enjoyed that. I really look forward to seeing her take shape.
Many thanks.
Great first episode. Subscribed, liked and looking forward to the series.
Welcome aboard!
Nice videography and that's important it's good to watch keep it up.
Thank you, I will
Cool video. Ive watched the Tally Ho videos from Sampson Boat Co, and ever since have wanted to build my own wooden boat. I think this one seems a better scale for me.
It's always worth starting by making a model of the boat you intend to build - kinda gets you into the idea and feel of the boats before you commit.
Kudos for the effort in filming and editing. Looking forward to seeing the build.
Thanks 👍 Nice that you appreciated the filming and editing too.
Very nice work on your project debut video - keep it up! Cheers from Australia.
Thanks - Ive enjoyed looking at work of Sydney wooden boat school.
Beautiful video. Good luck with the project! Looking forward to see more videos and enjoy with the way.
Best regards from Barcelona!
Thank you very much!
Well I am glad to have seen this in my suggestions on YT. I sincerely hope to see the project to the end remotely. Wishing you success!
Great to have you onboard!
Wow !! Great video
I’ve watched a lot of boat building videos and this is wonderful
Hopefully it will motivate me to finish my small sailboat build lol
Can’t wait for your next post !! Cheers from upstate New York ☕️
Thanks for your comment. If we motivate you to finish your boat - that will have made the video worthwhile!
It was very easy to like and subscribe, because what's not to like and I want to see the next episode. Good work.
Great - next one will be in two weeks, There will be about 10 in all.
Nice work gents! I knew nothing about wooden boats until I watched the Tally Ho series in the last few months. I now know enough to appreaciate the skill and art of buildiing and the beauty of the lines.
That's great - next you'll be building your own!
I look forward to the rest of the build and the launch! Wish I lived around the corner so I could come by the shop and learn in person! Cheers-
Thanks - hopefullly you'll enojy the rest of the series.
Count me in! Just got the notification, so the algorithm seems to be working. A very well presented vid. I'm in the process of building an Ilur, but anything like this is valuable. Keep on keeping on.
I love the Ilur. Looks like a real stable boat with lovely traditional lines. Good luck with the project!
Looking forward to seeing how you tackle the build and the finnished boat
Thanks - there's certainly going to be some ups and downs along the way!
I just discovered this channel. It was two years ago when I went through a similar process and built a 9'-0" dinghy. I really like the boat but it proved to be too small I will follow this and maybe be inspired to get out the lofting tools once again.
Great to hear that you are inspired. Good lucjk.
What a lovely balance of great filming and traditional boat building. I'm in heaven already. Looking forward to this channel growing and thriving. You have a sub. ❤
Welcome aboard! Thanks for your kind comments.
Very enjoyable film, thoughtful and with some very artistic shots. Looking forward to the next. According to friends, I'm a few doors down towards the Atmo, building a stitch and glue 10' in a tent.
Looking forward to seeing it
great channal, wish you luck
Thank you very much
This is a fantastic video. Boat building is such a satisfying activity that part of you will be sad when it is time to put it in the water and go sailing. 🙂
So true!
Great video thank you, I’m new to boats and recently built a plywood canoe , I dream of being able to do a project like this one day ( and finishing it)
Boatbuilding is addictive, isn't it?
My dream 🤩
Mine too, Rob!
I landed here after watching Ep.2. So pleased at watching the concept develop, the design and build, and how well done the video editing is! (I'm really annoyed at how most editing, even professionally, is done!) I built a small boat, from plans I bought, made with plywood and epoxy. I'm really interested to see how it's "really" done from scratch
Glad you enjoyed it!
I'm doing the same, but my boat is quite a bit less complex, but still good to pass a winter by.
It's a great winter project isn't it?
History mixed with building what's not to like. I have just had a Catboat built by a boat building school in France unfortunately they didn't have the time to totally finish her. So now I am working on her hoping to sail in the spring. My boat was lofted from some very old plans so an old boat lives again. On another channel you send in photos of your boat build and they are posted at the end maybe a good idea for you. I have subscribed and will watch your build and hopefully see you sail next year. Good Luck
Your project sounds fascinating. Spring is definitely the best time to launch. Helps you get through the winter dreaming of lazy days sailing!
Nice! I don´t mind if it will take you forever to get this thing ready, it is enjoyable enough to watch the process!
Glad you enjoy it!
Lovely video. I look forward to following along. Did you just butt the plywood together to make your lofting board?
Thanks. Pretty much it was held together by a couple of 2x1battens at the top and bottom. The floor on which the plywood was rested was pretty flat. We used 18 mm plywood but actually that's a bit oo heavy and it made it difficult later on moving the boards around.
Liked the historical parts. I'd like to know a bit more about your past, how you learned etc. I wish my lofting had gone as fast as that. It took me nearly 6 months to lay down my lines and make forms. Very good start guys.
That's some great suggestions. We'll try and cover some of into boatbuilding in a later video. Yeah loftinhg can really scramble your head, can't it? But it's sort of satisfying too.
Birth of a new boat ,,,, christened ?
There's some names in mind!
I love this, so this is a comment.
Many thanks!
Ditto
To be honest I was disappointed because the title suggested this was going to be a tutorial showing us the lofting process in slow, clear and methodical detail. Perhaps you could include it in futures episodes. Nevertheless I have liked and subscribed.
To be fair, there are a whole lot of channels who go over how to loft in the detail you want....
@@SavingMaverick55 That's true.
Thanks for your comment. Lofting is a pretty complex thing, although very satisfying when you get into it. I recommend Neophyte Boatwrights who have a more in depth tutorial approach. Some very good explanation there.
@@jonsealwoodturning4673 Thank you for the information. I've had a quick look and it looks interesting.
Dito to all the comments.
Many thanks
perhaps a little more explanation of what you're doing would help get those not familiar with boat building, and increase interest.
Thanks for the suggestion. We'll try and put in a little more explanation in the next video which will be in two weeks time.
Liked, subscribed, and shared on Farcebook (not a typo). I'm pretty sure your boat-building skills will at least equal and probably surpass you video production skills. Eager to see more.
Many thanks, the next episode will be in two weeks -setting up the keel and stem.
