  • A 3 day 2 night (and my first),canoe trip down the Current River in Missouri's National Scenic Riverway. My friend Bob and I put in at Akers Ferry and paddled about 40 miles to the Two Rivers take out Dec./Jan 2016/17. An awesome spring fed river that flows year round with multiple springs ,caves, and bluffs. Very scenic and very little sign of civilization. Great trip, can't wait to paddle more of it!

Floated different sections of the Current River annually for 38 years. Love that river. Always in the summer thought. Tip overs were my specialty.

I just did the current this past weekend from Cedar Grove to pulltight, but we stayed in the campground at night and drank our beers on the river. Can't wait to do some more! Great video!

I got a tickle out of you guys and the 5 gallon plastic buckets. It brought back good memories of a lot of trips. Harry and Ray along with a few others I have paddled with used the same buckets for all their gear. From what I have observed those buckets last forever. The guys have used the same ones on the 213 miles of the Suwannee River , A 5 night trip threw the Okefenokee Swamp , 7 nights down the St Marys River and numerous other rivers that we have paddled here in Florida. I paddle solo and used a Tupperware Actionpacker for my food and a waterproof backpack for everything else. I'm glad I did because on the Buffalo River ( Arkansas ) I proved that both of them would float. Not a hour later Harry and Ray proved the Buckets would float. LOL. Both times the rest of the guys chased all the gear as it floated down stream and nothing was lost.

The 11 Point has better rapids, but the Current has stunning beauty.

Great video Pete. Feel like the Current is my "local" river, even though I live about 100 miles away. Never a bad time there. Just note if you ever want to do again. The further up river you go, the better it is. Possible you may drag a couple times, but never have to get out of your boat. We did the Jacks Fork from the Prongs to Two rivers (3 Days). You'll love that one, but a little hard to catch the water level up.

Jason Robinson Thx for info, Jason! In fact my friend Bob is currently on the Jacks Fork right now! He put in at Prongs, and is soloing to Eminence. Water was at 2'+ at Prong when he left...so it should be clear sailing. We plan on a thru-paddle of Jack's Fork (Prong to Two Rivers) sometime in the next month, water level permitting. Thanks again!

Who are you...?..oh wait...I remember you now,...you're that Pete dude...welcome back. I have done the Current...back in 1977...I think....lovely river. Used to use those buckets as well. How embarrassing...tipping over. Lots of caves on that river, as I recall. Nice eagle action. This time of year you probably had the whole river to yourselves.

Great video, enjoy it! Just took my first trip on the current a few weeks ago and I'll be heading back next weekend. Trying to find information on a cave on the river right, I want to say shortly after the echo bluff state park. Is that the same cave you explored at the end of this video? Or was that cave closer to the end of the trip? The water was running too quick to get over there by the time we had noticed it and I want to make sure I'm ready to stop there next time. Can't find anything online so far about said cave. Thanks!

Pete, I would love to pick your brain about kayak camping on the Kings and Bufflao Rivers? I'm not sure if you will get this (it is likely a stupid question), but I'll ask anyway. What kind of tent stakes work for you on the gravel bars? I've never camped on one, but I've moved to NW AR and want to kayak camp on both rivers in the fall, winter, and early spring. I'll buy some sandbags to fill with rocks if nothing else. Any advice???? Thanks.

Hey William, I have found that the longer stakes work much better. Stay away from anything with a round shaft. I have tried several standard "backpacking" stake styles, & they don't work on the rocky/sandy gravel bars. Best I've found so far are a about a 8-10" Y-stake (looks like the letter Y looking from the top down). Found some at WalMart made by Coghlan that work well. May need to put a heavy rock on top of them on really windy occasions, and the sandbag or deadman's anchor may be needed in some cases. These will usually do the trick as long as you can get a decent purchase on "dirt" under the river rock.

Ahhhhh nuts! That sounds awesome Travis, but work has me slammed for the forseeable future. We hit the Buffalo (Ponca to Woolum) a couple wks. ago though, it was great! Workin on the video now, should be up soon. Have a killer float and I'll try again for the next one. Paddle On!
