- It's Year 2 in the MLB The Show 23 Franchise with the Oakland Athletics. Our first year only saw the team win 56 games with the weakest roster in baseball. After an offseason to overhaul things we welcome veterans to the team that should make us more competitive. At the same time, an impressive draft class from last year should be able to develop and come close to making a major league impact. We're making progress, but how much can we expect to improve in Year 2?
The A's are the toughest team for Franchise mode in MLB The Show this year, with their weak roster, struggling farm system, and the lowest budget in baseball. The rebuild of this team won't be easy. And there aren't many future stars already on the roster. We need to scout, develop, and completely change this team to succeed in the rebuild.

Michael still needs some development in the minors… his 90+ stamina is propping up his overall, he’s more of a 76-79 overall
Yep he’s only 2 overall lower then soroka but compare the per 9’s , 20 less stamina for mike too and he’s still 2 overall higher

I love the Soroka signing I think it makes sense for the A's to pounce on a player undervalued by the rest of the league for a bargain and for Soroka who was not getting any other serious offers...

Hey Cane, I think it would be a really cool idea in regards to the stadium (if year 4 is still the target date) to not just build it and then show it. Instead, you could implement into the series as part of the story of the franchise. What I mean is that in a game talk about how there is news of a new stadium for the A's, then after a while show the stadium, but not fully built and say that the progress has begun, and so on. Then finally show us the stadium completion in the opening home game of year 4.
This is just a thought I had, but as always I am sure you'll amaze us however you approach it.

The Soroka signing is actually perfect! It honestly fits with what this team needs and wants. He's not the BIGGEST FA, but he's someone Oakland definitely needed.

I cannot wait for Season 3 and I expect that we may see the debut of your top prospects in Don and Joe Michaels (although Don might be more of a September call up guy)
I also signed Soroka in my Phillies franchise he was very serviceable for my team but after I let him go to free agency he turned into an ace ironically with the A’s
I signed him in my Nationals franchise and he was just ok. Kind of disappointing. Just let him walk in free agency so hopefully it doesn't come back to haunt me.
Love that you opened up the budget a bit. It's not a ton of money, but its consistent with management understanding the potential of the last two draft classes and wanting to put the team in a more competitive spot as those guys graduate to the bigs.
I like the Soroka signing a lot! He can be the ace for now and eventually turn into a really solid second or third pitcher for the future rotation!
When you're looking at players, whether it be in the FA pool or even just on your roster, you don't have to enter and exit a players profile screen. Just click on a player and then use L2 and R2 to cycle through the players listed before or after the one you're on.
You might want to get a third Catcher so Shea and can get a break if you plan on making Tyler an every day DH/ 1st baseman.
I found after a couple years of drafting 7+ players every year, the game only adds the first 4-5 to my roster in the off-season. There's no indication that the players weren't signed, the game released them, they just weren't on the team and in free agency. Something to keep an eye out for
It all depends on how many players you have on your roster at the end of the year. You are only allowed 97-98 (I forgot which one) at the end of the year when the drafted rookies get added. If it exceeds that, the last drafted guys get released first
Yeah I've noticed similar tendencies even in older versions of the game. Thankfully it does seem to at least remove the ones with the lowest overall ranking and lowest potential.
@@michaelcorcoran8768 I think in my most recent off season I had a 47 overall, 90+ potential guy get removed. Not that big a deal since I haven’t seen anyone that low do anything except fill out the single A team. But still, if I tell the game I want full control of everything, I would like the game to at least tell me “hey, if you sim forward we’re going to release these people”. That’s all. 😕
The soroka signing is spot on 🔥spending at a solid price for a young-ish pitcher makes a lot of sense. Didn’t overspend. Hope some of the young guys step up like butler, maybe Denzel Clarke develops into something

Yeah baseball is crazy with all sorts of bizarre offseason rules and thankfully this game is relatively faithful to stuff like the rule five draft, arbitration... So much better than Madden, which doesn't have anything in terms of in-depth contract stuff.
Although I do wish this game let you offer to pay a percentage of a player salary and trade talks. That happens all the time. You know the Red Sox got the dodgers to pay for a lot of David prices contract when they traded mookie. They have to pay for a fair amount of moncada's deal when they traded for sale
This has been my favorite MLB the Show rebuild. It feels realistic and the pace you are taking with the series is great

dont be afraid of SP prospects like Forest Whitley becoming regular bullpen arms as they get older. He's a good example as his injury issues has affected his durability but still has the stuff that made him a top prospect for 2+ years. Not sure if you're against editing any players but going in and changing him to a RP and reducing his stamina to reasonable 35-45 would keep his OVR low but make it a much more accurate reflection of his skillset (in 2025)

I messed up big time in my diamond backs franchise I’m in the playoffs but I wanted to make sure I had enough good hitters but unknowingly made it to where I only have 5 pitchers in my bullpen😭
I think you did pretty good. You boosted the Pitching rotation both starting wise and Relief wise. Got a good infielder who can play a lot of positions. I feel like if the goal was to win 10 more games than last season you did a really good job of giving that goal a big chance
Make sure you don't have anyone in the second setup spot, weird glitch where they don't pitch at all, don't know if they've patched but something to look at during spring training
One thing ive noticed and maybe you have too, but the long relievers seem to pitch an overwhelming amouint of innings in sim. One of the solutions I've found is to put my best relievers in the long reliever role and then my acutal long relievers lower on the depth chart. For some reason the logic works backwards there. Theres a read on operation sports about it if you search up AI Bullpen Logic operation sports. Just wanted to put that out there for some added realism in the series and just in general for anyone curious that noticed the same

As a Braves fan Ive been pulling for Soroka to get back on the field. His first couple yrs were solid & he has a ton of potential.
Soroka deal is perfect. You can still have a money ball/analytics approach and not have to limit your budget to 60 million.
A more then reasonable gamble on someone who can develop and be a ace for a contending team in 2-3 years, or an absolute gem of a trade piece in that time.

Can't wait to see Michael pitch, but he needs to get that control up. Make sure your pitching coach has +points on Control. Maybe the farm manager too.
Soroka is a perfect pickup and, I think as an added bonus, he's a player that fits with this storyline. A reliable, front loaded vet coming off a strong contract year.
Lastly, I know we're not even to Spring Training, but the draft is just around the corner, haha. I think you should target an IF on the left side, ideally a SS, in the first. You'll have another high pick and have hit so far. I'd zero in on one position player with pop, be it 3B or SS, and then use the rest of the picks to find bullpen and possibly a long term project as a starter.

Might want to look at prospect swapping Estrella with another team, perhaps a potentially better prospect currently rated in the low 60's? with a team that looks short in the OF to keep the realism up
Yeah, I agree. If Estrella isn't called up this season then maybe package him for pitching prospects. OF potential for this team going forward is stacked, not even accounting for what Bellinger and Teoscar trades may return, and Estrella is an MLB ready hitter right now. He might return a young pitcher to develop while making a roster elsewhere. A win for everyone
Potentially. But I think there is a world where he becomes the DH and replaces Teoscar.
I dont know if you noticed cane, but when you looked at the team projections in 2025 youre number 1 in speed, first time youve hit number 1 in something congrats
For pitchers, BB/9 is the most important stat. Those relievers with high K/9 but 20-30 BB/9 are more than likely going to have terrible seasons
I feel sorry for Joe Michael when by year 2 hes gonna be rhe best pitcher on the team and only making like 100k
Michael first three months in single A, then double A and triple A. With training preset on focusing in control. And put him in ace position. Then in september call up put him sparringly to decrease the impact

One frustrating thing about buying people out early is that the last couple years of their deal they end up being angry or unhappy because their salary expectations are higher. Or at least that's the case in the older versions of the game that I still use.
Although on the plus side they are happy because they're technically being overpaid during the years that they're technically would have been eligible for arbitration.
I had to play for a while before I realized that every time I extended someone that they were going to be disgruntled if their average annual value was less than their expectations for the given year.
I always appreciate your feel for what makes a franchise fun (for me) - the climb/sim style.

Something to do along with doing the Braves method of signing up players instead of arbitration is trying to find ball players from that Oakland/SF area and just California generally as the Braves are also doing. Mike Harris, Olson, McHugh, etc.
That's a great signing with Soroka, should have had more offers. He's still young enough to see some stat growth going forward.
Only potential concern is you promised him an ace role, does that impact Michael's role with the team when he's ready or does it matter?
Pete Alonso for 91 over 7 would have been such a good deal if you could have gone for it
I started watching your channel for the Football content. Being from England, I have always been an NFL fan, but never really watched Baseball, however I love your videos and the way your team build, so always love the MLB franchises. I understand the rules of the game but don't really understand some of the other parts for example, what's a designated hitter... what's the rule 5 draft... things like that! But thanks for explaining parts of the arbitration helps me understand. Loving the series and loving learning about the game through you. Keep up the great work

Alex Reyes I think has a super high ceiling. Him only being 30 with A potential means within 2-3 seasons you could be looking at a completely different player
I think you should trade either Brown or Bellinger if you think Don is gonna be in the majors. Outfield of Gordon, Don, Bellinger/Brown would be great and you get both Soderstrom and Shea in the lineup at 1B and C. Love the A’s franchise!!!
Also I feel like Bellinger and Brown give you a similar output

Love this series! I wouldn't mind seeing you manage the games from the Quick Manage option, more of a deeper look at the games go instead of simply quick simming most them. CPU will mess up your lineups and swap out players even if you want certain matchups. Just some feedback from a fan! Keep up the great content!

Soroka is solid. He's been a goto trade or signing in every franchise I've run, to the point now its boring and I don't bother. He gives you a lot of innings and his era stays around a sub 4 for most of the deal.
I think adding a few veterans who are good bats and on base guys would really help even if its just a year or two type of deal. Not to play everyday but give the team a better chance to progress when young guys go through slumps or maybe need to be sent down.

Soroka probably will decline that 5th year option because of the front loaded deal, but still a great boost for the 4 years and then you can look at resigning him year 5 if he declines.
Kind of a separate idea and thought and idk if you’ll even see this, but I’m in the same boat as you for my Rockies franchise where I want to build them a new stadium but have zero idea how to properly use the stadium creator to make what I want. When you’re more familiar with it and are ready to use your new stadium, would you consider making a video about how you did it?

I wish I got to this video 2 hours earlier, just signed a 3 year deal for 3mil a year as a SP for the Dimond backs (haven't been close to .500in my save) in my last year before arbitration in RTTS
I think at this rate you see the As not do much for the next few years. You've spent and brought in a ton of new talent and now they wait and develop and draft.

Great series bud- when signing free agents, pay attention to the “Role”. A better role increases interest in signing (depth vs everyday or rotation/bullpen). Keep up the good work!

Yep you said it HR/9 and control are so low plus the high velocity I can easily see him getting rocked early on joe Michaels , the stamina and velo seems to be carrying the overall a bit I wouldn’t trust the 83 as much as I would some others , I mean soroka is only a few overalls higher but his per 9s are significantly better with much worse stamina like 20 lower then Michael but he’s a higher overall but only by 2
The biggest takeaway would not be how many more games you won than last year, but how much more competitive your team is this year compared to last, where they always getting blown out or where they in even game and had a few breaks gone their way would their win-loss record be better? The wins will come if you keep your team competitive. Seems like your bullpen is letting you down most of the time.
The only problem with signing guys early in the show is the salary is a flat rate and you can’t scale the contract like teams do. So most deals, like the Hunter Greene deal, scale up every year to offer some flexibility in the future. But in the show it’s a flat rate so your just costing yourself more money in the present without getting much of a discount in the long run

Hey Cane, I tested out the generational pitcher scenario in a franchise. I know it will be hard to wait but I let them play (full sim) two years in minors - full season at AA and AAA. He hit majors at 20 years old (full sim) 3 years 63 wins 3 CYs and and a career 2.20 ERA
Got three dominate years at a premium price tag which is just what this team needs
In my franchise Alonso declined 5years/20m a year from me. So him signing for $91 blew my mind. Maybe a move Cane should of made with his age at 30. 🤷🏻♂️

Have Michael in Double A for a full season and then Triple A for a full season. 20 year old Michael would be great, don't want to rush him on a bad/rebuilding team.
