goooooddd gaaaammme ;) its indeed one of my favorite too , havent played in 20years i think its time ! great channel , subbed liked and looking foward to your next content !
He'd say that about every game too. And they were always good. He didn't say it for Beyond the Beyond though, and I should've picked up on that. I appreciate the encouraging words and support. 👍A remaster of Suikoden I & II is being worked on, so let's hope it's good.
I've only played the 2nd one (unsurprisingly, I loved it) so it was very interesting to me to learn about the first Suikoden. By the way, great channel you got going over here, I just binge-watched all of your videos and they're very cozy and I appreciate the selection of games. We especially don't get enough good channels with DOS games reviews, so that's an easy subscribe for me.
Thanks a lot, welcome aboard. 💀 Suikoden II still stands as my favorite JRPG of all time, hopefully one day I can talk about it here. Meanwhile there's several DOS games that I haven't gone through yet.
You've got my sub, man. Keep up the good work! There's like nothing about Suikoden 3-5 online, so if you keep doing this series, it won't have a lot of competition.
I am stuck in Suikoden 3 right now... I wish that I were stuck back in the original. Suikoden 3 is not all that good of a game, really. I was glad to reminisce about the roots of the series, maybe it will be enough to push me out of 3 and into 4.
I seriously haven't replayed it since it came out. I don't hate it, but it's my least favorite Suikoden game. I felt the transition from 2D to 3D wasn't done well, and iirc there's tons of backtracking. The intro was absolutely amazing though. I remember watching that with a friend (also a big Suikoden fan) and we both got hyped up, with him saying "I'm going to play this over and over again." Not sure if he did or not. I honestly like 4 more, which is absolute sacrilege to the Suikoden community. One of the things I didn't like is the party being limited to 4 characters.
@@VoidbrandGallery Yep, you nailed it. It seems like it had a rough translation, or the original writing was just not as good as other entries. Backtracking was intense, and multiplied by 6 for each of the different simultaneous story threads. I look forward to playing 4 just based on your comment alone at this point, haha.
@Jon G It's been awhile since I played 4. Most of the Suikoden community dislike the game, but there are pockets of people who still enjoy or at least appreciate it. Hopefully it'll be an enjoyable experience for you too. 👍
we had such a similar yet different experience with this game lol. i was a sega kid. and only had a handful of quality RPGs. PS3 and PS4 were among my favorite or at least most time spent. the first tip line i ever called was for PS4 spell combos. PS4 was one of those games i discovered at a blockbuster and didnt even know it had come out or was slated to. But Suikoden was one of those games you discovered at a blockbuster or funcoland. And i was intrigued for the same reasons. i also did the same thing with the manual and jewel case! it took a few playthroughs but once i figured out the duels are beatable i had to find more secrets. the internet for me at that time was super available. AOL discs were everywhere, and everyone had a land line. the hard part was finding game resources. but i remember a fan page on Angelfire that had all the info for the game, all of it in glorious HTML tables. was one of the first things i printed off the internet that wasn't "pictures".
I kind of miss the old jewel insert, but I can't deny it actually melds better with the rest of the games' cover arts. Phantasy Star III is considered the black sheep of the series, but I enjoyed it. Never finished it when I was younger, but managed to a few years ago. Even managed to get a hardcopy with the hint book. It was a step back from the previous games, but I don't hate it. There were very few RPGs for the Sega Genesis back, but they were really good at least. PSIV still ranks as a great for me if I were to ever do a top 10 JRPG list or something.
The internet was an on and off ting for me growing up as mom couldn't completely afford it along with rental computers. It was like magic in a way or a curiosity on that level. I know it wouldn't be the case for people with computers way before then, but after the PS2 and Dreamcast, I think that feeling left gaming and internet started to settle into something controllable to a degree, but still very free.
Wow, I can't remember. I moved around a lot back then and prices were different depending on what area you were in. Maybe 1-3 dollars for a weekend, or up to maybe 5 depending how old or new the game was. I do remember them having rewind fees for VHS tapes and late fees though (which they were really stringent about), and late fees were a dollar a day.
Let's hope so. It'll be nice to have an alternative over emulation and buying expensive copies on eBay. It's Konami but if it's good I'll gladly buy it.
I am playing this right now for the first time. So Mathieu is a military strategist and not a surgeon, well I have not gotten to a part that would have made it clear. Interestingly enough I have not used soul eater rune much, except on bosses, until a person on my stream told me that it doesn't work on bosses. Otherwise, I keep rune powers for the boss battles and situations where I am desperate, and so far the last one has not occurred. I am also finding it is annoying that I can't really use all the new people in the party, as the game is pushing narrative forward and locks me with the certain characters. But, the story itself seems to be good so far. As for translation well yeah, that is a problem as sometimes runes and crystals are used interchangeably, and other terms confuse me.
Yeah some of the spells for the Soul Eater are instant death, though you do unlock more powers for it later that'll be useable against bosses. The game is fairly easy, but the game doesn't tell you what each spell does. I looked through the game manual and it doesn't tell you there either. At least it was fun experimenting with the rune spells back in the day. And true, there are a lot of moments in the game where you're stuck with certain characters. There's 1 moment in the game where your party is maxed out with mandatory members. The sequels eased up on this thankfully.
I remember playing this when it came out. It absolutely captivated me. Amazing story. Great gameplay. Really enjoyed your video man. I'm gonna watch the rest of them later today. Keep it up man. With time it'll grow!
I appreciate it, thank you. Still a big fan of the series, still ranks as my top favorite JRPGs of all time. One day I'll share my thoughts on the second game and the rest of the series.
Really glad you like it, thank you. I do really want to replay and share my thoughts on the rest of the series, especially before the remaster hits. Actually never did revisit 3, 4 or 5 since release, so those will be interesting to play again.
@@VoidbrandGallery similar voice, you both talk about old/semi-obscure PC games, and he quit youtube a month or two before your channel started. Just thought it would be really crazy if there was a connection
I wonder though. Even in real life we have people that are evil in actions outright, but will justify their actions. Seldom do people not, so I don't think it's trying to be morally grey, just realistic. People confuse ambiguity with the human trait of justification. Words mean very little and people easily get deceived by them and why actions should be looked to prove those declarations true.

good videos dude, keep it up

Oh man I'm so glad we didn't get that awful cover art in Australia 😆
Can't wait for the remaster!
I discovered these last year. Really fun games.
Great content man! looking forward to watching your other videos!
Thanks a lot, happy you liked it.
Was a fun video :) Thanks!
I will play this game
How much did it cost to rent a ps1 game at a blockbuster kind of store back in the day?
Wow, I can't remember. I moved around a lot back then and prices were different depending on what area you were in.

Thanks for the video! Are you playing Eiyudian Hundred Heroes?
It's a downright shame this video has so few views. This was a great little romp back in time for me. Liking, subscribing, and sharing!
Honestly it's more than I thought I would get! But thanks for the words of encouragement, especially from a Shining Force fan. 👍
I wish I could show friends so they would be interested in Suikoden but it's basically all the spoilers.
But I enjoyed it!
Just saw this game getting a remaster on steam, i hope the port is good.

Nice! It's cool to see people trying this gem out for the first time.
Keep up the good work! You just hit the nail with the content I enjoy. Take care 🧙🏻♂️
Well narrated and edited! Glad I found ths channel.
Thanks, friend. Appreciate the encouraging words. 👍
What CRT filter are you using there? Or is it just simple scanlines?
Just the one DuckStation provides (dolphinfx/scanlines)
This game is goated.

Great video, keep up this level of quality and your channel should grow, please continue to make videos about retro games :)
I feel like they could be better, but I appreciate the support a lot. Thank you. ✌️
I hope a review of other suikoden titles is in the works! Fantastic video
